our brain is as complex as a cpu and although we know what a cpu can do the potential is infinite, IMO a cyborg/android can see it's own nature like the one we see with our god, we are the architects of their universe therefore the definition an android/machine can't match a human being. Something we call god was the architect of our universe so we think there is nothing to match him/she/it, it would be the same ideology with the machine.
By the way, just in case anyone was wondering, the name of the song is "kugutsuuta ura mite chiru" Pretty sure the spelling is right, but google it just in case
there is a song in ghost in the shell first episode in the second gig which comes at nearly the end when the girl shoots the terrorist through outside the window and it goes like "i can't be cool". whats the name of that song???????
hey dude, there are two songs on the SAC OST 2, one called "I can't be cool" and one called "We can't be cool", so search for those. the OST with those songs comes with the Limited Edition of GitS SAC volume 1 DVD.
we are only consciousness...all there is is consciousness. Perhaps with quantum computing we will be able to emulate-simulate and thus create conscious AI...(although I have my doubts...)
there is differences in the hardware; what is biology and what is electronic, the list is endless. but the software is becoming increasing similar as machines processing power near ours.
still such technology will take more than a decade to mature, especially when people are unwilling to accept such ideas. if you don't believe you can swim, you will never learn if you can. =)
it is not hard to see the brain is just a massive processor with a bios written in DNA. the only difference is the OS learns instead of install software.
we are already able to create AI that will pick up pattern without us telling it what a pattern would be, while not to the level of humans, it prove it theory that machine can think.
What are you people talking about? We're already machines. Taken from Dictionary(dot)com -> A device consisting of fixed and moving parts that modifies mechanical energy and transmits it in a more useful form. Cast aside your silly little imaginary friends created by religion, and only the medium is different. The argument of whether or not machines will think is also idiotic. A submarine does not truly swim, but does that matter?
If you read the books it all seems very possible. And scientists have replicated half a mouse's brain onto a computer chip. So maybe cyber-brains aren't that far off.
Well, if something in a robot breaks, you can exchange that part with a working one - this works with all parts of the robot, and you can backup the memory.
I would see robots are a bit mor immortal than humans are, from a practical point of view. :)
holy shit. I watchedthat movie today. It's a real eye opener. I made the mistake of watching it for the first time with my siblings. If I knew it was going to be like that I wouldn't have let them. It took me a sec to take in the movie in the end. over all I think the movie was excellent! ^_^
The sperm and the egg clearly signify that the technology involved is at least partially organic in nature. They have progressed to the point where they can create an egg cell that, when fertilized with a proper sperm cell, can actually grow and develop into whatever piece of technology they happen to need. In this case, it appears to be some kind of artificial neuron.
A nice progression from the first movie's opening. Although I must admit that putting more quotes from philosophers in your movie than actual dialogue can make for a tiresome movie. Still, the opening's very pretty.
I agree. I spent half of my time trying to figure out what those quotes ment because sometimes they came one right after the other and I had not processed the previous one yet.
Never believe that humanity can be defined simply by 1's and 0's. It will always start with the orginals who's exerpiences developed what we all call emotions, morales, souls. Our experiences are what give us these things. Even if an android were to simply download these things, they came from flesh in the begining. Believe nothing less than the fact that humans will always be superior in some fashion.
by the way, nice clip catch from the movie. I love watching it over and over.
well said... I personally think that there will be a point when we'll have to get machanic parts in our bodies inorder to proceed... but maybe its just my imagination... lol...
everything a human is, is based off chemicals and neurons.
Witch at some point can be mimiced by robotics. So all im saying is... that someday. You will be able to either transfer all those "neuronal processes" to something else.
"like a giant killer robot of massive death that flys through space blowing up planets..."
@deleriousexile The worlds fastest supercomputer today has the capacity of 2500 Teraflops. That's about 0.2% of the estimated capacity of a human brain.
In the 30 years of my life, I've seen computers getting one million times more powerful. So, it's perfectly possible that machines will surpass our intelligence, even within our lifetime. We can let them experience the world just as we do and they will be able to program themselves just like we do, only better.
@noxure yes but machines always operate on facts of logic and mathematics. While we develop based on experiences and uncertainties. Even if a machine were to have the same capacity and processing power as the human brain. They would never be us. Take for instance data from star trek, or the dolls in ghost in the shell. They were powerful and sometimes super human to flesh and blood. Though they never matched up to us in aspect that we call humanity(emotions, creativity, ethics).
@deleriousexile We use logic and discrete mathematics in our own conscious and unconscious decisions. And machines use a simplified system that hasnt quite reached our level yet, however even our own arbitrations are essentially mathematical in logical nature, including the uncertainties and experiences which are in effect evolving functions that we are constantly revaluating.
@deleriousexile In the end Machines dont have to match us, they have their own nature defining their own ethics and functionalities. At the end we are just a prisoner as they are in our own limitations and perceptions. Some of this are directly from Buddhist texts that led Shirow to raise the questions that he raised in context of man and machine. To declare any one of the sides superior to other is shortsightedness, when both are different worlds with own standards just as any human is.
@deleriousexile You can not possibly limit the reaches of an android within the reaches of the flesh that conceived it at first. An android's world is different, no matter how much of it is shaped in the image of the world of the flesh. Otherwise it would be saying the reality of a painting is always the painter's reality, the painting can infact transcend the painter's reality. Superiority of the flesh.. claiming to its purity is an illusion that your consciousness binds you to.
@deleriousexile In a sense humanity could be defined that way. Anything that is not infinite can be described by any other non-infinite set, such as 1's and 0's . You just need enough. In this case, you would need enough to describe the positions of every atom, every electron, and whatever other elementary particles there are. The main questions is, do you need all that? Anything that is 'human' but requires less resources for the same actions is superior.
...the decline of the basic concept of humanity... brought about by our need to define ourselves with our increasing technology... one day... being "human" will be nothing but a bunch of 1's and 0's and a downloadable patch...

Humans were always meant to transcend flesh, you can find this in ancient texts, religions, and spirituality.
And the way to transcend flesh is not through death, but through immortality. To become machine.
