Fela the son of Africa, the soil and energy ot the BANTU people wherever there are will always be GREATEST musician to come out of the continent, the prde of the BANTU will stand as the example of pure BANTUNESS.
Good music is universal, though we were lucky to claim ownership of Fela being born a Nigerian.
He cannot be compare tp James Brown Fela was not only a great musician but a fearless and great political activist operating in dangerous circumstances, he suffered for his outspokeness and paid a big price being beaten, improsened by the military gov and ultimately lossing his mother.
He possessed superior intelect and gr8 musical prowess.
@dawitkungfu Actually its not an ethnic thing back home in nigeria....afrobeat draws inspiration from a vast array of sources/sounds which we can call African.
This was the first Fela I've ever seen. I decided to buy this DVD after I got word I'd be auditioning for some heavyweights in the afrobeat scene. This is an unexploited frontier, despite the musica on Broadway and hip-hop artists desperate to cling to real flavor and culture, seeing as how they are losing their own in the process of selling out. If they ever had any. Fela never faked the funk and either should you. Remember swagger is all good, but don't forget to bring the "goods".
@TearzGypsy yeah you got that right, baba never faked the funk.. the original baba, kalakuta republic, he would be horrified by the commercial slant of the fela musical.. not his bag, but its good because he is now reaching the type of audience who have no idea of who is was, and still is to our zietgiest, NIGERIAS BEST KEPT SECRET.. LOL!
@ArvanitisWarrior (Why say you have nothing to do with it). Music is the universal language. No doubt your youth in Greece are listening to some form of music that has its origins in this music from Africa. If they listen to Micheal Jackson, or some rapper from the USA, it has its roots here.
@cjfl1962 I would not go so far to say that all of Michael Jackson's music has its root in Africa.
No doubt, the main influence sure is from africa, but I'm pretty sure, that there is also a (christian) religious influence (spirituals->gospel->soul) or a jewish-european influence (e.g. "The Great American Songbook") and several others in pop and rap music.
@austrianfunkhunter Thanks for recognizing this, some would not. My view is that music is the world's language, it draws use all together. My favorite R & B groups is Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. It's old school stuff, you should check them out.
@austrianfunkhunter I like Mayfield too. I only listen to "Old School " that includes rock . Today's music, I can't stand to listen to it. You will never find Beyonce or Snoop Dog in my CD collection, that's for sure.
There was only one FELA, and there would never be another like him. He was a great instrumentalist, composer, aranger and perfomer. At the same time he used his music to advocate for African and Africa liberation.emancipation.
My people of the world, do you still disagree that Fela was a prophet? Do we even still listen to his lyrics, forget this rubbish music now played in Nigeria by so called artist that cant even clap let alone play an instrument, FELA lived that we young Nigerians may make a better tomorrow for ourselves and children, even the current President is a product of Army Arrangement.
simply genius....there's just no ther way to put it..........Before white people start feeling the groove like this....he has to be good, i mean for a genre of music they're not used to...
people who went always to fela concert were mostly white but all his songs( 90%) were about the wrong doing of white people. do those guy dancing know what fela is talking about? i bet not
@yayafitini Fela only played to 90% white people when he was out of Nigeria on tour which was two months a year. The rest of the time he played at the Afrika Shrine twice a week for us and whoever was in lagos.....
I think you have it the other way around. James Brown influenced him with his soul and Funk. He incorporated soul, funk, and jazz, and high life and called it Afro Beat. James Brown was a house hold name on the planet in the 60s.
@PatsBooks true but listen to time is running out now the influence was both ways also google the interview with ginger baker on fela he talks of james brown even google bootsy collins on fela
its all about mastering your art at the end of the day. Fela is one of the few who did just that. I would challenge ALL musicians to not sell out for ratings or trends and actually become something more...
At 19.14 'All you all happy? Argh gaddem, I'm not playing here for money you know I'm playing here for my own enjoyment and your own enjoyment, are you happy? gaddem' You got to love Fela, he was larger than life, the baadest African musician to set foot on planet earth...

Thanks for posting this video. Much respect. Would someone share what the Yoruba phrase "abami eda" means. Several people wrote that. I also would like to know what the phrase "Orun e re o" means. Is it related to Orunmila (sorry, I'm learning about this from books and online sites and thus have incomplete information.
Thanks in advance for the information and THANKS for the music & dancing!
abami eda is translated extraordinary or supernatural person, and orun e re o is like saying rest in peace to the dead, the word orun is translated heaven, orunmila is the combination of two words orun and mila.
Thank you for posting this video. I love Afrobeat music.
Much respect. If it is okay to do so would someone please share what "Abami Eda" and "Someone else wrote
aba mi ega. Is that the same phrase? And what does Orun e re o" mean? I know they are in the Yoruba language and I'm guessing that Orun has something to do with Orunmila. But I would appreciate translations of these phrases from a Nigerian.
@Azizip17 ''eda'' means human being while ''abami'' is an adjective used to qualify supernatural or great person. ''abami ega'' is a wrong sentence bcos ''ega'' is a type of bird. ''Orun re e o'' means peace be onto u in heaven. ''Orun'' mean heaven but ''Orunmila'' is a traditional prophet in yoruba land of Nigeria, who is belived to also descend frm orun (heaven).
FELA was simply A KING...the kind that nature offers humanity to fulfill a deep purpose...his music can be heard in the cosmos...lets give thanks he walked among us as one of us...but more importantly we have to live up to his vision for us AFRICANS...lets raise to free AFRICA any way we can...lets make this revolution that LIFE calls for...lets save AFRICA...
I wished the new crop of starry-eyed, half-wit, vocal-masturbating Nigerian rappers could pick up an instrument and learn something form the old serious musicians.
@Olamorinde I agree but this can be said for all these rappers worldwide, in the U.S, in the U.K, in Carribean, and Canada. All these black youth have turned their backs on our music for money. All they want to do is grab a microphone and their crotches and stand on stage spewing out nonsense.
The beginning of the performance is an Instrumental Solo but I believe the song on the second part of the performance is M.O.P (Movement of the People). The song was written with regards to his political party formed in 1979 when he decided to run for the presidency of Nigeria in the Second Republic before his candidacy was denied by the Establishment. Also note that @ time 8:30 the perfomer that has a Sax solo is his son the renowned Femi Kuti who took after his father but slowed down of late.
Fela was a genius, hard to come by such soul-healing beat.....we will miss you forever.....this is classic music in it's natural form....there is too much beauty and purity in it......Stylish....a class of it's own.
I was in one of his show in 1985 at st Pabu in west of france . Really a giant ,his heart but also his feeling what he say is what he feel ,what he tell is what he live . sad ,so sad !! love you
At 2:32 Fela sees the nigga that owe him money in he like "a nigga give me my money", then Fela realizes he's performing so he says "Fuck It back to work then!!"
For what its worth I am a white American and FELA will ALWAYS be my BLACK PRESIDENT!!! Incase u wonder, found him on accident long ago. I set a tape to record a documentary (DJEMBEFOLA -MAMADY KEITA) on WorldLink TV. Tape kept recording and accidentally recorded Teacher don't teach me nonsense! Hooked ever since. Have since turned many a person onto FELA.

@Olamorinde I agree why do we have to ape our Stateside brothers.
High life, Afro Jazz, And traditional can never be Beat, Long Live Tony Allen, Segun Bucknor.
And may we continue to enjoy our LKate Brother Fela. Thanks to "Idamawatu" for posting this. Film

@Olamorinde I agree but this can be said for all these rappers worldwide, in the U.S, in the U.K, in Carribean, and Canada. All these black youth have turned their backs on our music for money. All they want to do is grab a microphone and their crotches and stand on stage spewing out nonsense.

What is the name of this song/

@supervirtuousw203oman its called 'movement of the people.'
geligurl 2 years ago
The beginning of the performance is an Instrumental Solo but I believe the song on the second part of the performance is M.O.P (Movement of the People). The song was written with regards to his political party formed in 1979 when he decided to run for the presidency of Nigeria in the Second Republic before his candidacy was denied by the Establishment. Also note that @ time 8:30 the perfomer that has a Sax solo is his son the renowned Femi Kuti who took after his father but slowed down of late.
