  • O Fela Kuti é maravilhoso!! Amor e música!!

  • A great musician. I look to this guy for inspiration for my music studys!

  • EXCELENTE Esto es música...!!!

This is of his own creation music!!!

  • Good music is universal, though we were lucky to claim ownership of Fela being born a Nigerian.

He cannot be compare tp James Brown Fela was not only a great musician but a fearless and great political activist operating in dangerous circumstances, he suffered for his outspokeness and paid a big price being beaten, improsened by the military gov and ultimately lossing his mother.

He possessed superior intelect and gr8 musical prowess.

    Long live the King!

  • You know! In Europe you have music critics,

in Africa we have music critics made in Europe, haha!

  • ♥♥♥♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♥♥♥

  • wonderful!!! awasome!!! let me sing for you "tenor90210 west hollywood"

  • @DEH013 I agree, but never forget how great James Brown is. Never settle for greatest hits either. It's all about the B sides.

  • AWASOME :D <3 <3 fela kuti

  • yum!

  • Someone please tell me the name of this song?

  • @Peejay011

Called MOP Movement of the people. The recorded version is faster and still a goodie!!

  • @Peejay011 I thought i helped out earlier but the name of te song is MOP (movement of the people) Recorded version is faster.

  • wow, this music sounding like the Eritrean kunama peoples music. does anyone know what ethnic in nigeria plays this kind of music.

  • @dawitkungfu Actually its not an ethnic thing back home in nigeria....afrobeat draws inspiration from a vast array of sources/sounds which we can call African.

  • fela, abami eda, baba 70..u are the greatest

  • This was the first Fela I've ever seen. I decided to buy this DVD after I got word I'd be auditioning for some heavyweights in the afrobeat scene. This is an unexploited frontier, despite the musica on Broadway and hip-hop artists desperate to cling to real flavor and culture, seeing as how they are losing their own in the process of selling out. If they ever had any. Fela never faked the funk and either should you. Remember swagger is all good, but don't forget to bring the "goods".

  • @TearzGypsy yeah you got that right, baba never faked the funk.. the original baba, kalakuta republic, he would be horrified by the commercial slant of the fela musical.. not his bag, but its good because he is now reaching the type of audience who have no idea of who is was, and still is to our zietgiest, NIGERIAS BEST KEPT SECRET.. LOL!

  • FELA!

    -G

  • Respect to Africa and its people. I'm Greek and have nothing to do with this, but this very nice, quality music.

  • @ArvanitisWarrior (Why say you have nothing to do with it). Music is the universal language. No doubt your youth in Greece are listening to some form of music that has its origins in this music from Africa. If they listen to Micheal Jackson, or some rapper from the USA, it has its roots here.

  • @cjfl1962 I would not go so far to say that all of Michael Jackson's music has its root in Africa.

No doubt, the main influence sure is from africa, but I'm pretty sure, that there is also a (christian) religious influence (spirituals->gospel->soul) or a jewish-european influence (e.g. "The Great American Songbook") and several others in pop and rap music.

  • @austrianfunkhunter Soul music comes from Gospel, Gospel comes from negro/slave spirituals and they originate from Africa.

  • @cjfl1962 yes sure. I would never deny that. I just said, that there are other influences too.

    see for example on wikipedia

    /wiki/Spiritual_(music)#Replacement_with_Christianity

  • @austrianfunkhunter Thanks for recognizing this, some would not. My view is that music is the world's language, it draws use all together. My favorite R & B groups is Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. It's old school stuff, you should check them out.

  • @cjfl1962 Yeah! I really like Frankie Beverly & Maze

There are some very nice live versions of "Joy and pain" here on youtube.

One of my favourite R&B singer is Curtis Mayfield and I guess you can call that stuff old school too... ;-)

But there are so much treasures among that good "old stuff"...

  • @austrianfunkhunter I like Mayfield too. I only listen to "Old School " that includes rock . Today's music, I can't stand to listen to it. You will never find Beyonce or Snoop Dog in my CD collection, that's for sure.

  • respect!

  • Bravo, Bravo.....

  • There was only one FELA, and there would never be another like him. He was a great instrumentalist, composer, aranger and perfomer. At the same time he used his music to advocate for African and Africa liberation.emancipation.

  • Just unbelievable

  • ëtes vous contents ?

Je ne joues pas pour l"argent. Je joue pour mon propre plaisir.

that's why your music is so beautiful.

    thanks master

  • FELA KUTI MUSIC IS THE REAL DEAL!

THE IT MAKES U WANA MOVE ITS CREDIBLE MUSIC

  • My people of the world, do you still disagree that Fela was a prophet? Do we even still listen to his lyrics, forget this rubbish music now played in Nigeria by so called artist that cant even clap let alone play an instrument, FELA lived that we young Nigerians may make a better tomorrow for ourselves and children, even the current President is a product of Army Arrangement.

F:well it takes us about 7-8 min to warm up and free flow till we like, and we only do what we like. ciao

    RIP Fela Bro

  • people who went always to fela concert were mostly white but all his songs( 90%) were about the wrong doing of white people. do those guy dancing know what fela is talking about? i bet not

  • @yayafitini Fela only played to 90% white people when he was out of Nigeria on tour which was two months a year. The rest of the time he played at the Afrika Shrine twice a week for us and whoever was in lagos.....

  • people who went always to fela concert were mostly white but all his songs( 90%) were about the wrong doing of white people.

  • schools should start teaching fela in schools all over the world.

  • Real as it gets!

"I`m not playin here for money, I´m playin here for my own enjoyment and your enjoyment! Are you happy?"

    AFRICA UNITE!!!! FELAAAAAHHH

  • MOTHER AFRICA

  • Sono un afrobeat dipendente da alcuni giorni!

  • this is serious

  • master of the universe!

  • this performance was awesome just too raw men!!!

one of the greatest Afro pioneers

influenced artists from James brown all he way to the roots

    give it up yo

  • @jaygo101

I think you have it the other way around. James Brown influenced him with his soul and Funk. He incorporated soul, funk, and jazz, and high life and called it Afro Beat. James Brown was a house hold name on the planet in the 60s.

  • @PatsBooks true but listen to time is running out now the influence was both ways also google the interview with ginger baker on fela he talks of james brown even google bootsy collins on fela

  • its all about mastering your art at the end of the day. Fela is one of the few who did just that. I would challenge ALL musicians to not sell out for ratings or trends and actually become something more...

  • His music is full of sweet instrumentations...

  • Hands down Fela's Greatest song. "Movement of the people" is a complete package.

  • respect.

  • Awesome

  • At 19.14 'All you all happy? Argh gaddem, I'm not playing here for money you know I'm playing here for my own enjoyment and your own enjoyment, are you happy? gaddem' You got to love Fela, he was larger than life, the baadest African musician to set foot on planet earth...

  • just feel it.. when Fela play, there is no white or black people no more there is just some people who love the music like kids.. and don't forget that we can see Femi on the video too. .

    FELA LIVES

  • Nice to see his son Femi representing the Fambul!!!

  • hahaha..really pity the hwites..they can dance to anything..haha...fela is truely crazy though..haha

  • gotta feel the flavor!!!

  • True legend

  • awesome!

  • Does anyone know the name of the tune? Does anyone know where and when they were playing?

  • @RFranklinCarter - name of the song is "Movement of the People-1 - MOP #1"

You can find it online under the title "Fela live in Amsterdam"

  • "How can you criticize music if you're not the one playing it?" Damn right, Fela!

  • I've always wondered if Fela's use of the Eb minor pentatonic scale symbolizes Black power in some way...

  • Abami edu means weird one or strange human in Yoruba dialect.

  • Ever lived legend.. He is incomaparable.. how many musicians both local and abroad can do what he is doing. As he plays, he conducts with all his body, well focused no mistake and at the same time he is smoking the IGBO. All in one... I wish he was a gospel act.

  • BABA kke

  • so wonderful - memories are ever ready to come by listening to this - @capuano 231 make your trip and listen to Fela's offsprings - the GREAT is gone but seeing us who enjoy him whenever we can. And Henry Kofi's congas - so wonderful.

  • FELA!!!! Woa...one wonder if this was really in the 70s...because Nigeria is still plagued by the same very forces he mentione din this song.....thanks to those of you who are enjoying the rhymes..some of us are relating to the message.....so sad...so sad....but one day. As you could see, FELA is still relevant

  • i thank god everyday that there was a cameraman in the crowd at this show. FELA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This music is truly amazing. You really have to sit back to enjoy it. Don't skim through it, enjoy the African music, it is so peaceful. I wanna take a trip to Africa one day

  • Thanks for posting this video. Much respect. Would someone share what the Yoruba phrase "abami eda" means. Several people wrote that. I also would like to know what the phrase "Orun e re o" means. Is it related to Orunmila (sorry, I'm learning about this from books and online sites and thus have incomplete information.

Thanks in advance for the information and THANKS for the music & dancing!

    -an African American sister

  • abami eda is translated extraordinary or supernatural person, and orun e re o is like saying rest in peace to the dead, the word orun is translated heaven, orunmila is the combination of two words orun and mila.

  • Thank you for posting this video. I love Afrobeat music.

Much respect. If it is okay to do so would someone please share what "Abami Eda" and "Someone else wrote

aba mi ega. Is that the same phrase? And what does Orun e re o" mean? I know they are in the Yoruba language and I'm guessing that Orun has something to do with Orunmila. But I would appreciate translations of these phrases from a Nigerian.

    Thanks!

    -an African American sister

  • @Azizip17 ''eda'' means human being while ''abami'' is an adjective used to qualify supernatural or great person. ''abami ega'' is a wrong sentence bcos ''ega'' is a type of bird. ''Orun re e o'' means peace be onto u in heaven. ''Orun'' mean heaven but ''Orunmila'' is a traditional prophet in yoruba land of Nigeria, who is belived to also descend frm orun (heaven).

  • per Me che l'ho visto dal vivo è stata un esperienza che cambia la vita ...... e lo Spirito ............. :))

  • FELA was simply A KING...the kind that nature offers humanity to fulfill a deep purpose...his music can be heard in the cosmos...lets give thanks he walked among us as one of us...but more importantly we have to live up to his vision for us AFRICANS...lets raise to free AFRICA any way we can...lets make this revolution that LIFE calls for...lets save AFRICA...

  • Wow ! Magic groovy !

    watch?v=j7I_eFoIk64

  • i KNOW about it, just make sure you have plenty of food, and by the way, people will never listen so, just take care!

  • fela baba............

  • lo vengo escuchando desde hace algun tiempo y es una banda fenomenal.

no sabria decirles si perpetuan hasta estos dias pero su musica basada en la impro, es notable

  • Really enjoyed this, kinda was wanting some more drum beat in there like more djembe going off but it still was great music.

  • best ever. love him than any artise in united state

  • the girl that keeps showing @ 18:38 - 18:46, i think shes fine. typical african face. very nice.

  • I wished the new crop of starry-eyed, half-wit, vocal-masturbating Nigerian rappers could pick up an instrument and learn something form the old serious musicians.

  • U ARE GREAT WITH SUCH A STATEMENT.

  • @Olamorinde very well said

  • @Olamorinde

You would think. It is easier to screech and hop about than to sit down and learn an instrument, let alone instruments. Thanks for your comments.

Nigeria musicians, look listen and for God's sake LEARN. Some of you have some talent, use it.

  • @Olamorinde

    I APPROVE OF THIS POST

  • @Olamorinde

my what e you don talk true, it is sad

  • If you don't get chills or amped from the beginning of this song then you have no soul.

  • @Olamorinde I agree why do we have to ape our Stateside brothers.

High life, Afro Jazz, And traditional can never be Beat, Long Live Tony Allen, Segun Bucknor.

And may we continue to enjoy our LKate Brother Fela. Thanks to "Idamawatu" for posting this. Film

  • @Olamorinde I agree but this can be said for all these rappers worldwide, in the U.S, in the U.K, in Carribean, and Canada. All these black youth have turned their backs on our music for money. All they want to do is grab a microphone and their crotches and stand on stage spewing out nonsense.

  • What is the name of this song/

  • @supervirtuousw203oman its called 'movement of the people.'

  • The beginning of the performance is an Instrumental Solo but I believe the song on the second part of the performance is M.O.P (Movement of the People). The song was written with regards to his political party formed in 1979 when he decided to run for the presidency of Nigeria in the Second Republic before his candidacy was denied by the Establishment. Also note that @ time 8:30 the perfomer that has a Sax solo is his son the renowned Femi Kuti who took after his father but slowed down of late.

  • wonderful!!!!!!!!!!

  • Never compare Fela with

    anybody.Second to none.
