A long time ago indeed, but go back a little further and you see Primal Scream at their most magical. Bobby totally distances himself from this period and wants NOTHING to do with it. Every book about them skims it like it didn't happen. After Elevation it was really obvious that they were looking for the next bandwagon and then hey presto dance music happened they well and truly jumped on it and they buried the past. There isn't even a video of early Primal Scream on Youtube. Snuffed out!
which is funny, because this album most likely influenced more bands than any of their others. not to say it was their best, but it had a strong impact on the indie pop scene
Primal Scream used to be a good band with good songs. Gillepsie sacked most of the rest of the band on the eve of recording Sonic Flower Groove. Jim Beattie and Gillespie wrote some of the best pop songs of that era. Deserving of a wider audience than they ever got. Primal Scream disappeared up Gillespies backside around about the time they recorded Ivy Ivy Ivy and were pretending to be the MC5
With the 12 string guitar and the 60's sound present on the whole album, I would be amazed if people did not make a link with The Byrds. I know me and my mates did when we got it all that time ago. Good album and this ones my favourite (and Silent Spring)
Oh My God.. Primal Scream used to be a good band... this is fucking amazing. i'm in shock. i always loved velocity girl, looks like i'm gonna have to buy sonic flower groove
Man, Sonic Flower Groove is a great record. Primal Scream was a very promising band when Jim Beattie ran it. They could have been a Byrds for Generation X.
Primal Scream sucked after Sonic Flower Groove. Bobby Gillespie should have stuck with Jim Beattie.
The Stone Roses were big fans of Primal Scream, in their early days y'know. They even nicked the melody from "Velocity Girl" (Primals 2nd single) for the chorus of "Made of Stone". And then Mani joined them years later, obviously!
For what it's worth, my favourite Primal Scream album is Vanishing Point, followed by Screamadelica and XTMNTR. Evil Heat is average, Primal Scream and Sonic Floor Groove are poor, Give Out...is awful (except Cry Myself Blind) and I didn't even listen to the last one cos the single sounded so much like something off Give Out. A mixed bag, the Scream, but when they're good they're very very good.

I probably stand alone in the belief that Primal Scream were at their best when they wrote Byrds-inspired tunes. I just can't get into everything post-Screamadelica. Though their rendition of "Step Inside This House" is quite moving.
I personally think that Sonic Flower Groove deserved more recognition, although its not their best album or anything particularly special it's still a nice little album to spend half an hour listening to. Also I don't agree with some reviews on here about this album saying that it was a total Byrds knock-off, it just shows how much they were influenced by them. I think that this album is a bit too underrated.
is it my imagination...? or is that Jim Reid from Jesus and Mary Chain, in that video? (i know Bobby way playing drums for them at the/just previous).
although "gentle tuesday" is a good song, there is no way that old primal scream even comes close to what they are doing these days. i agree "riot city blues" may not be their best but the last 4 albums sure beat "ivy, ivy, ivy" any day....
you're making your arguement on the wrong video, no one will agree with you here. sonic flower groove was as classic as the strawberry wine and ectasy eps by my bloody valentine, or the bodines debut album. this was the era when primal scream were truly indie legends.
I agree with you. Primal Scream peaked around 1988 and were the best band around then. They probably deserved more recognition for that album, but it was a time before indie had become mainstream with the likes of Blur and Oasis.
Wow... haven't seen this in years, how old is this 1987? Anyway I took the psyched out slides / photos that appear at the beginning of this video & are behind the band in the live footage... and erm I'm still using them nearly 20 years later at my club events here in Barcelona... Roger C
because it never was brilliant psychedelia. "deep hit of the morning sun" and "when the bomb drops" are way better than anything on "sonic flower groove." c'mon dude!!!!
Doesn't Primal Scream play the first album songs anymore?
I never saw them playing these songs currently.
They should to play one song of the first album at least.
I like "Primal Scream(1989)" "Screamdelia", "Give Out...", "Vanishing Point", etc. But Sonic Flower Groove is my favourite album!
This album remembers the 60's rock like Beatles or Byrds!
I love 60's rock very much!

I don't think Primal Scream ever tried to be bloody MC5. You are allowed to be influenced by groups. Kick out the jams brothers and sisters!!!

Some people hear that 12 string chords and riffs and say: "Byrds".
What a waste.
This Primal Scream, from Sonic Flower Groove, has got nothing to do with Byrds. Twenty years listening and I don't get any byrd in this album.
You take the wrong flight... sorry.

man what the fuck? how does some spamming faggot who listens to really awful music like Slipknot even come across this video?
Probably did a search for some slipknot song with Scream in the title and this came up in 'Related videos'..
That feature is so goddamn useless. They should do away with it completely or at least refine it so that it actually serves a purpose.
