@u2mixer the clash never sold out !! they did there thing from the early days to the last !! the only white band that could play reggae like a black man !! i come from a place where its multicultral and we listen to the clash in the blues as much as we listen to reggae !! big up to the mighty clash !! from THE BARTON HILL MASSIVE !!
This is music, this is passion, these are lyrics that mean something- it is so sad that most kids today see only shallow, hyped 'stars' and think the x factor is their route to stardom and money- and of course every one of them is gonna make it!!! We are all in this life together so let us all move together to make the world better for every single person. Thanks Joe, love ya xx
fuckin great, spit da true in our faces & we say we love the clash but we still fighting (each others) for a good place under the lighthing, it´s a shame.
@SirSpanna Telling me to fuck off? Really mature.. I don't know loads of kids who listen to punk, and i was making a point. There's really no need for you to get involved because i stated my age, is there.?
As far as odd music for someone to listen to goes, one of the most famous punk bands ever really isn't very unique. There are plenty of thirteen-year-olds out there who like this stuff, you're not special.
I wasnt looking for special points? I was stating my age, because it was relevant to my point, which is that i'd have loved to have watched them live, and i obviously cant, theyre my favourite band, and it was the first music i ever listened to (my father was a huge fan..) and most people my age think its weird to listen to this.
My husband worked at Oxford Circus underground station in about 1983, he was in the Argyll pub on his lunch break. Started talking to the bloke next to him at that the bar it was Jo. They talked for about half an hour about everything and nothing which is the great thing about people in pubs. I used to love the Palais 1976-79 over 27 nights on Wednesday when I was 19.
I managed to crash a soundcheck in either 1980 or 1981 at the Coventry Locarno and asked Mick Jones if I could have his autograph. "Do you want it ?" he asked sneeringly, seeing I was dressed in my office suit. "Yes", I said truthfully. So he signed the back of my business card,"to Ian, from Mick Jones (GTR.) I still have it after 30 years and I can still remember the gig which was fucking great. They began the set with "I fought the law". What a fucking band.
aw man. joe is dead. what a fkn loss. a legend. forever and ever for years to come. never to be forgotten. a little guy with a big voice and big statements for the 99% of us little guys. gonna miss u , joe.
I dont think its about if the Pistols or Clash are better at heart they were two different styles with the same message, the Clash clearly had the bigger catalog and many many amazing songs, at the same take the Pistols had one true album with many decent songs, both are amazing acts. The Clash a bit more so due to the longevity.
Saw the Clash at the Manchester Apollo on their '16 Tons' tour 9long time ago). Brilliant, they played for more than 2 hours without even stopping for breath.
Is there any justice in this world - if there is can anyone explain why then the Sex Pistols are more famous than the Clash? - even though at best they only wrote 4 decent songs (and one over-fondly remembered debut album)?
song about punk culture being the thing it hates - senseless and about money. i havent come across a single music subculture that hasn't turned out to be for suburban kids to spend their parents money and stand out fashionably. makes me depressed. at least theres a song about it. after the depression of this realization, comes a wave of energy from the depths of the soul to DO SOMETHING
@emilysedgwickk I'm sorry kid. Not to put you down. But the clash were sellouts. That's an historical fact. But they were legends and part of the first wave of punk movement nevertheless.
@omerta0414 so if you're a writer and your books become famous and you sell more, are you being a sellout even if your books are still the same style and have the same message?
@aNxello Ok. First of all, your explanation made absolutely no sense. The clash were sell outs because they signed up to a major record company. And Joe Strummer was a socialist. He gave up his ideas just to earn more bucks and gain more fans. Not to stereotype punks. But those are the rules. They're like modern green day. And yeah. They still have liberal messages in their songs but so did green day and RATM. They're all sellouts. No offense to the fans.
@omerta0414 "Complete Control" is pretty clear about how the Clash felt about singing to a major label. They never realized that the record company would own their soul, so the best they could do was make sure the fans never got a raw deal. If the Clash wanted to "earn more bucks" they had MANY chances. Could've sold double & triple albums for double & triple price, or played 7 Bonds shows & skipped town, or reunited for million$ of dollar$, or done butter commercials. Naive? Yes. Sell-outs? No.
@iwantcompletecontrol the problem with signing to small labels is they cant always distribute the records i mean the buzzcocks would never had made it big if they had`nt signed to UA
@omerta0414 "Not to put you down." but address em' as kid? A weak attempt to belittle there. Before you start stating more "historical facts" you should first entail what a sellout is because last time I checked, popularity and record sales does not define the ridiculous and ambiguous notion, that is 'sellout.' The Clash were a band ahead of their time, they took stands against racism and government/police brutality in an era of ignorance and should never be associated with the word sellout.
Every Lyric in this song is brilliant.... baggining on the London Reggae, racial disharmony, politics and especially disdain for their fellow punk rockers turning rebellion into money...
i dont care what they say but the clash made punk or music more dynamic and express full no other bands like the Sex Pistols and Ramones , added organ, piano, keyboards, harmonica, acoustic guitar, saxophones and HORNS!!!! make music more tastier and more enjoyable not for only punks but in human beings.
such a great song about a great scene. it disturbs me when people on utube trash music that isn't punk or metal or rap or pop. this was a scene where race and background didn't matter. this song is a tribute to the greats of reggae and ska from the time period. I remember being in my little nip nop, fudgeing my huggies and my Daddy was playing this on the radio as he worked his fingers to the bone and I stole his Lime Pickle sandwhich :) Love my Doi
@panca00 I dont care about signing to record companys thats away to get you music heard . i just dont like the sex pistols and johnny rotten. i also just remmeberd he went on that shit tv show, im a celebrity get me out of here or im a hasbin get me back in the public eye ??
@joshjs667 The butter commercial did make me cringe. Johnny Rotten, at least, seems to have a desire for fame these days and when the Sex Pistols stood for so much anti establishment and you see him doing such commercialised stuff, it kind of makes you wonder whether it was all an act.
Searching for the Clash on Youtube, and Sony keeps telling me that their music is blocked in my country. I'm sitting in fucking North London, about ten miles away from the real Hammersmith Palais, and it's fucking blocked here.
@Useless2112 Hahahahaha, I have the same problem some times and think the same thing, 'im living just a few miles away from where this shit was made and your telling me its blocked in my country' loooool. Glad Im not the only frustrated one
@Useless2112 yeah well it`s possible that you are actually living in an alternate reality with no Clash in England? Maybe ,in your reality someone else got the Clash ,say, Kazahstan ?
I'm lucky enough to have seen the Clash...I wanna share a great memory. Me and a mate had travelled to Manchester and managed to blag in for the soundcheck. As it went only Topper and Paul were rechecking drum and bass sound. Bouncers tried to chuck me and my mate out and Topper jumped over his kit and siad "Leave em alone, they're fuckin with me". I was 15. Same night we ended up backstage, cos now we're Topper's mates, Strummer hands me a Coke can with rum in. Memories forever!
@TheMARKELA1 - That might the coolest story Ive ever heard... I read once that ,I think , it was Howard Devoto, who was waiting outside the studio in manchester when they were recording Bankrobber, and they let him in while the session went on
@TheMARKELA1 those guys were the most approachable band ever. I had to pass just 2 guys to get to them in Rome in 1982, 1 guy in 1979 in London. They were true to their words, they were really just like the rest of us
@TheMARKELA1 You lucky S. O . B. Never got the chance, but I've been a fan for many, many year's. Thank's for the story. They were alway's like that with there fan's. How was the show? What year was the show?. You know if Joe was with us now we might have been able to see them now. I 'm glad you got to see them .
@AmericanPowerBase yea but name a good punk band that was formed in the last 11 years? I was talking to a guy about starting a band and me and him play guitar and he said "i`ll be lead guitar and you can be rhytm" I said that is fine as I jus wanna play guitar, then he replied with "really, haha that means ill be more famous than you cause lead is more famous" I just said WTF and walked away. It seems to be a thing now of being more famous and rich then making great music with this generation .
Strummer-Jones best songwriting duo EVER (sorry John&Paul)

The Clash were never 'sell outs', but they may have had to 'sleep with the devil' to get their message out there to the masses.
Most groups unfortunately have to do this as the moguls in the music industry just wanna make money out of ANY band and ANY person with talent.
But the band kept hold of their political and ethical ideals regardless of bowing to 'the man' when they had no other choice but to do so.

@Useless2112 Hahahahaha, I have the same problem some times and think the same thing, 'im living just a few miles away from where this shit was made and your telling me its blocked in my country' loooool. Glad Im not the only frustrated one
BETH78900X 6 months ago
@Useless2112 yeah well it`s possible that you are actually living in an alternate reality with no Clash in England? Maybe ,in your reality someone else got the Clash ,say, Kazahstan ?
SRKIKI902 6 months ago
@SRKIKI902 Hey, I hope so. That means there's still a Clash out there somewhere!

I read once that ,I think , it was Howard Devoto, who was waiting outside the studio in manchester when they were recording Bankrobber, and they let him in while the session went on
legolas11795 9 months ago

The Clash were/are actually real, whereas "Jesus" is a fictitious fairy tale used to scare children and those who are scared of death.
