great vid! i live in norway and would like to have a tent like that! but one question: as the tent has no floor, what will happen to the snow on the ground when it's 28 C inside? why is it not turning in to a swimming pool?
@Powboy93 It's the same as an igloo, the air temperature is 28 degrees but not the snow. In fact it will melt a little and go slightly harder but it won't turn into slush.
This is incorrect. Hot-tenting is done by either using a flour of boughs (usually spruce) or else a tarp is put down to cover the snow. As for igloos, one uses either a tarp or furs/hides. I`m a cold camper who uses igloos. If you try to sleep on snow, your bag, gear, clothing will get soaked by your own body heat. You MUST have either a waterproof layer beneath you OR an insulating layer (such as hides or boughs) or the floor will melt under you.
@PineMartyn You're right, but you might have missed the huge bedroll Ray has in the tent too. He's not sleeping on snow but on an insulated 'mattress'. In other shows he's also laid spruce boughs for flooring too.

@dinnerandashow Or more, when camping in northern regions you will die without insulating and warm gear. Weight becomes secondary in this cold of an environment.
Winter trekkers don't carry a stove and tent in a pack. Most of the gear is hauled behind them on a pulk or a tobaggan. One lets the snow do the heavy lifting.
Can someone please tell me where I can buy that exact tent!! I really want to buy his tent unless their is a better tent with a wood stove. PLEASE SOMEONE REPLY BACK!
@TeaDoubleE85 Check out Kifaru.com. They have a superior product, I've used in the wilds all along the Rockies from Mexico to Canada. Their tipi tent (I use the sawback) with the small pack stove is exceptionally light and durable. It is a bit costly, but worth the expense if you're serious.
It's a SnowTrekker tent. They make several models and styles. You can order from them online. They do custom orders as well. And they sell 3 sizes of stoves to match the tent size.
@solobackpacking thank you for comment. I have seen that some people live in high mountains with no wood stoves for several month. This is the reason why I wrote my comment.
Fleece isn't waterproof, and snow tends to stick to it and freeze onto it, then melt when it warms up, soaking you. Gortex is waterproof, but it breathes very poorly in cold temperatures, causing you to sweat and get wet from the inside.
@PineMartyn It does depend on the availability of materials though and Ray is aware of the environment he's going into so adjusts accordingly. He has an insulated bed roll here.

@vaidotas86 What about it?
imaginaryteaparty 1 year ago
@imaginaryteaparty will it provide moister out of your clothes ?
vaidotas86 1 year ago
@vaidotas86
Goretex breathes too slowly to prevent wetness during high activity.

To do so it is recommended avoiding gortex, cotton and down.

whats he sleeping on ?it looks like a cloth tent bag but being on the ground i would think it would get wet.

He has a groundcloth on the floor. Traditionally, hot-tenters use a bed of spruce boughs, with a ground cloth over it.
