  • This guy really knows his comics.

  • Could do with listening to less crappy british indie music though.

  • im more of a manga person.

lol dev makes comics seem so fun.

  • Manga and comics are the same thing. Sure, Japanese comics are different than American comics, but French and British comics are different too.

  • Manga and comics are not the same thing, they are as different as comics are from graphic novels. but thanks for that saying mangas that bugs me so much.

  • Sorry, manga and comics ARE the same thing. There are differances because of the different cultural quirks, but at their core they are the same medium. Osamu Tezuka got into drawing manga because he loved American comics and animation. And comics and "graphic novels" are the same medium same as well. The only differance between a comic and "graphic novel" is that "graphic novel" is a more marketable term. Will Eisner came up with it because he knew no one would take his "comic" seriously.

  • no there is a depth and sophistication that found in graphic novels that comic books lack. plus the difference is in the name graphic NOVEL. and of course manga started off because the americans brought over they're comics after the war which influenced the japanese artists at the time. since then the artform has developed to such a degree that it no longer resembles western comics. They're not the same thing you obviously don't know what your talking about.

  • Most graphic novels are serialized in comic books before they're collected in book form. Watchmen, Cerebus, Sandman, Maus, you name it, every influential "graphic novel" was a comic book first. And even if they weren't, depth has nothing to do with it. A dumb movie and an intelligent movie are still both films. Manga still do resemble western comics. They are sequential stories told using pictures, panels, word balloons and sound effects.

  • (continued from last comment) There are differences between American and Japanese cartooning, but that's going to happen to any medium when it's produced by another culture. Japanese music is different too, but it's still music. Belgian comics are different as well. If you want to say American comics and Japense comics are different, you'd be correct. But if you think they're two completely different art forms you're mistaken.

  • that's exactly what I'm saying. I never once said they weren't the same medium. I am just saying they are two different things. But I have to say they're is a difference between a graphic novel serialized in a comic book and a comic collected into book form. thank for this little debate it's been kind of fun.

  • I agree with what you're saying, I just don't like the term "graphic novel" very much. Most of what we call graphic novels these days aren't even novels but just archieves of comic book series. It's a term that's used because it doesn't have the childish connotations that "comic book" does and i find that somewhat frustrating because comics can have depth as well. It takes just as much talent to tell a good story in a 20 page comic book as it does to tell a good story in a longer graphic novel.

  • the guy explaining MADMAN is awesome! lol.

they're making a film of it (David Fincher directing!)

and Madman is going to be made into a film too by Robert Rodriguez (it will be similar in style to Sin City)

and also, i recommend Daniel Clowes' Ghost World
