This is not the true way to cook basmati rice. It is a not so short, short cut. Microwave for five minutes. WTH is that? There is so much starch in that rice. It should be rinsed prior to cooking to release starch, then cooked almost al dente, then strained completely to release the starch from cooking, and then put back on the stove for 3-4 minutes on the lowest heat setting. Rinse later with cold water is not the best technique. Thats why she puts it in the microwave for five more minutes.
I know an easy, quick way to cook basmati rice. Buy a microwave ice cooker (I have a progressive International one). Soak Basmati rice in water for 20 mins in the microwave rice cooker unit. Drain the water, add new water with the ratio of 1 cup of rice to 2 cup water and cook in microwave. My microwave (WHICH has sensor) has rice feature. If you don't have the same feature, you can develop program that consists of two settings.
all i know about rice is that long grain such as basmati/jasmine need ten minutes with the absorption method and 18 gor round varieties such as pudding or arborio. wash the rice drain cook with some salt 100gr rice 250gr water, never stir just let it simmer after the initial boil, peaking doesnt help cooking the rice sooner :P
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGH! YOU STUPID WOMAN! See how complicated you've made such an easy task like cooking rice! Firstly, you don't need as much water. The ration is 1.5 cups water per cup of rice...that's it. You also need either a knob of butter or drizzle of olive oil. Next, you must WASH the rice, it gets rid of starch. Then BOIL the rice, and as SOON as the water boils, cover it and simmer for 20 mins DON'T STIR IT. 20 mins later, you have perfect rice, ready to be served.
i used to depend on the microwave to make stuff too like oatmeal, soup etc till i didnt have a microwave anymore and i do everything on the stove now. it can taste exactly the same
Mam your rice looks yummy; but the water you're wasting can satisfy the need of an entire village. I'm sure there is a better way to cook a cup of rice.
this uses 3 containers and takes much longer than it should. Use 1c of rice (rinsed 2-3 times) + 2 cups of salted water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 10 min. Remove from heat and leave covered for another 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork. One pan. 20 minutes. Fluffy and perfect.
I tend to wash and leave it in warm water for 15 mins before boiling, boil for 15mins, this way you can serve from the pan. (just a time saving tip for you)
quite a different technique and im from the caribbean by the way...the way we do it is instead of last minute washing...wash first a few times so that u dont boil with dirty water, drain and place double the water to the amount of rice i.e. 2cups rice=4cups water, let soak for half hour makes the diff....when boiling THEN add salt and butter and maybe 2 bay leaves and turn on low, keep on low till water disappears then fluff with fork NOT SPOON.
Great technique - thanks! It looks like I can make it ahead of time, and then just micro it at the last minute. I am going to give it a try with the vindaloo tonight.
OK, I made this last night, and it came out perfect. Really the best basmati rice I have ever tried - fluffy and light and perfectly cooked. I added a touch of tumeric to the boiling water because I wanted it to be yellow, and it was lovely on the table. I might try adding cloves and cinammon stick next time. Also, the best part is that I "made" the rice two hours ahead of when the guests arrived, and then microwaved it just in time to serve. Thank you so much!
in our restaurant we soak (aproximattely about 1 liter of water) the nine cups of basmati rice for a night and then we do the thing thta anna did. we serve it with beef chicken and lamb kabobs with afgan salad and freshly made pizza bread

This is how I have always cooked rice except instead of microwaving it, I rinse with very hot water. It always comes out perfect.

That style is old skool. Just like my Grandfather he cooks it for a bit then he rinses it after.

How is it that one should permit rice with the microwave oven? Didn't Kevin Trudeau say that too much microwave causes all kinds of health problems?

long grain rices like basmati and jasmine
tend to be much lighter and fluffy do to their low starch compared to short grains.

5 minutes in the micro...that seems like way too long! No more than 2 minutes should suffice if you have a powerful oven.
