You know, I used to listen to this song all the time with my dad as kid, and then last year when I got back into the 'Mats I realized it was actually about someone. So I looked up Big Star and thought Alex was a really cool guy! Then I found out he died had died in just the previous week... Alex, I'm sure I would have loved ya just the same!
@basisti94 Wow I remember my moment. Now you just got to get to their best stuff and it is not easy to find on YT unless you are like so many who like them Drunk, off-key. Just listen to songs from Let it be, Tim, Pleased to Meet Me, that are studio. Of course there is a good live Swingin Party (from Tim) with Paul and guitar in an audience. Their first 2 records are not really good unless you are into straight punk but "Johnny's Gonna Die" on YT .. is something you are gonna love...
Fave song ever, and I only WISH I were named alex chilton so i could sing this all day :) The Replacemements rock my mismatched sox and Im glad to share Minneapolis with them :)
@notlad75 Look, If your parents named you Alex Chilton for any reason it wouldnt be The Replacements. I mean I love The Replacements but you should check out Big Star or Alex Chilton solo.
omg! i've heard this song before, but it was covered by another band whose name escapes me. nonetheless, this version is amazing! i've just started listening to the Replacements and i am loving them!
Yeah someone should write a song about Paul. You know what the dumbest quote I ever heard (besides some of mine on YT): Bon Jovi (the singer not the band) once said "everybody is saying The Replacements are so good but how can that be when I haven't heard of them". Well Bon bons has yet to write any song as good as the worst Replacements song and wouldn't a guy check out a band before he pronounces such nonsense? His songwriting sucks and Justine Beiber might have more talent.
well said , yeah fuck Bon Jovi and them toy twats u2 and the cock suckers called oasis ,, very little real rock and roll around , but the MATTS were the dogs ballocks,,,
@11xzxzxz Well I logged on here to enjoy The Replacements, not to burn on Jon Bongiovi. But I feel inclined to add my thoughts to your discussion. In an interview in 1989 ol' Jon Bon burned on U2, claiming Bono thought he was Jesus. Then he dumped on R.E.M....to me it must have seemed that he felt the hair-metal-grip slipping...and a more thoughtful era of pop music on the horizon. You know, it just seems that there is a qualitative difference between writing "hits" and writing "songs".
@martianshoes Sure, nice points, there are "hits" and "song". I am sure Bonbons things his hits are songs. I would agree with him that Bono of U2 oozes of Jesus pretentiousness, just my opinion, not trying to start a riot. Bono is one very special god.
Fuck REM , and fuck U2 and fuck oasis and fuck pulp and fuck BLUR , and fuck the killers, and fuck white stripes too, bunch of spineless tossers,, this is what matters,, THE REPLACEMENTS !!
@spadge321 No offense but when I read that I thought you must have good taste in music. But sorry to say a jury of your peers has deemed your site a blurring oasis of .. sorry I have to be honest or my doctor told me I will die if I lie or I piss too many people off. How can you love the Replacements (unless you are mocking the mats), Hell the groups you don't like are (except for Blur) better than you. God bless.
@11xzxzxz WOAH, WOAH, WOAH! Bon Jovi's bad, don't me wrong, but comparing him to he-who-must-not-be-named is a pretty low blow. Why don't you just cut off his nuts while you're at it?
@LibraHorse1 I was just kidding. But really Bono and Band have two great songs - New Years Day and I will Follow. They have 10 good song. And a lot of fair stuff - they rarely do lousy songs. Just trying to keep it real. Plus I don't like groups that cloak themselves in religious garb .. does not Bono (the rest of the band seem like nice guys) act sometimes like he is god and no a special kind of god? Yeah I'm sure it's somewhat of an act but smugness is Bono.
@11xzxzxz I'm quite partial to "Where the Streets Have No Name" myself, but that's not what I was referring to. I was reacting to you comparing Bon Jovi to Justin Bieber.
@LibraHorse1 Yeah Streets Have no Name is one of their best songs .. however it has that typical Bono conceit as if he is such a wonderful guy exposing these no-name streets but his own aggrandizement comes first. Someone could accuse me of that in these meaningless rambling but I am genuinely a better person than Bono. ha. I prefer my moralist with a little less conceit. OK Jovi is better than Beiber on the streets with no nothings.
@LandsEbb Why not admit that you are a big fan of U2 first - full disclosure - so we can weigh your bias too. You have more of U2s videos then anyone else. I always try to separate by bias from reality .. I just go by what I read, Bonos lyrics, body language and good intuition. I could be wrong at times of course. I would bet most stars have egos but Paul Westerberg just tries harder to keep his in check so maybe much of what I judge is just an inability for B to keep his ego in check.
@LandsEbb And belief in god is not reality-based either. Especially an ego-less benevolent selfless god .. read your bible and see thousands of contradictions, bad dogma, cruelty from god, mass murders, and Jesus believed in never-ending hell for simply being skeptical of the Son not being the son of god -- regardless of morality . Yeah it's in the bible 3 times. So much stoning and killing going on in the old testaments and armies of Israel doing god's dirty work. Have a good day .
@11xzxzxz I said nothing about religion, and it has nothing to do with whether I like or hate a band. I keep my detrimental opinions to myself even if I do hate a band, and I really don't care what you think, just that you think it's total absolute truth when it's based on nothing.
@LandsEbb Now aren't we so smug? Not my opinion .. just a lot of people. My posts are not for you by the way .. get it? No of course you never will. Oh sure your love of Bono says you are not aware of pomposity .. Have a good day and night so you will stop writing me.
hey, i'm trying to find the name of this band, i thought it was the replacements but it's not, one of their album covers is a drawing of cartoony guy with glasses. can somebody help me?
@piemanbeatle so axl is a better singer than paul? bob is a better guitar player than slash? duff is a better bass player than oh wait...... tommy is playing with.. steven is a better drummer than chris? it is a toss up here, i will go with steven on this one maybe. pound 4 pound guns don't stand a chance! Mats rule!
@SmilingCWeenSorrow I'm not sure. I think he only had one hit with the Box Tops, and not much success after that. This song might have something to do with being famous at a young age, because Alex Chilton was a teenager when "the Letter" was a hit.
@xothegirlz oh, right, I get it. the thing is: is it because of that? I mean, you can be really inspired with some unfamous artist, anyway. however, your theory seems to fit really clean
@SmilingCWeenSorrow After the Box Tops Alex Chilton started a band called Big Star - perhaps the most influential 'unknown' band in rock history. Westerberg was a huge Big Star fan - hence the line in this song, 'I never travel far...without a little Big Star.' You all should check them out....see some of the videos in the 'suggestions' column. You won't be disappointed.
Come back when you've learned some music history. Big Star is the greatest unknown band of all time. Actually, drumbist said it more eloquently and intelligently.
You're right in that we should just enjoy the song, and let it go. However, all I ask for in this case is for people to understand what and who the song is about. You should check out some Big Star and Alex Chilton's solo work. You might enjoy it.
@Tuzotonic Fair enough, but I looked back and I think the comment you replied to started with "I'm not sure." So, I was admitting that I was only guessing.
Alex Chilton was asked about this song and he thought it was crap. Too bad he was wrong and didn't take it as the tribute it was. You can really hear Big Star in the Replacements stuff but I think the Mats were better. Lyrically it's hard to touch Westerberg.

"i'm in love with that song" mostly because it reminds me of my ex gf. the replacements, alex chilton, big star= it's all music she loved and i started hearing because of her and now like it very much. i can almost hear her sing..
@60sglamx Gin Blossoms are freaking amazing. Yeah I can definitaly see that replacements sound when I listen to them. Goo Goo Dolls I can kinda see too but not as much. I think maybe Soul Asylum have a slight Replacements influence as well.
@IxEATxLIGHTBULBS yay we got a new one :) just be sure to listen to their older stuff first. alex chilton, skyway, unsatisfied, valentine, kids dont follow, left of the dial, dont ask why, color me impressed, etc :)

No, that song is called 1:03 Saturday Morning. I got it on vinyl... it was a side project of his.

Just played this song five times in a row.
I'm really going to have to check out their stuff now! This particular song reminds me a lot of Scott Reynolds-era ALL, though others may disagree.

Goo Goo Dolls and Gin Blossoms sound like they draw influences from The Replacements
60sglamx 1 year ago 2
@60sglamx Gin Blossoms are freaking amazing. Yeah I can definitaly see that replacements sound when I listen to them. Goo Goo Dolls I can kinda see too but not as much. I think maybe Soul Asylum have a slight Replacements influence as well.

No, that song is 1:03 Sat. Morning. I guess it was a side project of his. It's a rough demo -- pretty rare.
