Ha, that was our residence, but provided by my wife's employer. Same with the furniture. We would never be able to live like that anywhere! I know, the generator was overkill. I saw the hotel in Lake Bosumtwi with the same sized generator catering for 30 rooms!!!
You could say the generator is overkill and then again you could say it was "needed". It depends on what kind of lifestyle you want and can afford. Of course, most Ghanaians don't have one but may middle class Ghanaians do. The generator at the hotel you saw could be one that only generates enough electricity for lights but not enough for air condition and other things, thus the generator could be only generating electricity to certain circuits and not others. It's quite complicated.
I've stayed in places in Ghana before where the generator only minimally provided electricity to the necessities but not others when the power was out. And as you may have experienced, even big city Accra experiences electricity and water outage on a regular and frequent basis.
