I am reading a lot of comments that say Kissin is playing like a "fast robot" and while Kissin's playing perhaps isn't really going for the lyricism in this piece, one has to keep in mind that this is an encore. Something to get the audience up on their feet and cheering! (which he certainly accomplished)
@chobeethaninov I & my ex girlfriend attended both Zimmerman and Kissin's concerts 13 yrs ago in Taipei. Both of us agreed that Zimmerman's concert were so beautiful and it brought us impressive and comfortable listening experience. We all agreed Kissin's talent. But, Kissin's concert left us very strong musical experience. Strong notes, strong sound, strong piano, strong impression....Both of them were playing same type of piano works. No offense, just share some of our experience with you.
Un-suprisingly better, and more musically played than Lang Lang ... who unfortunately butchers the piece, hence making my ears bleed ... this healed it back up again :)
Technically impressive but too loud and too fast. More variety of light and shade needed. I like his shaping of the more lyrically nostalgic middle section.
@piano345 Exactly. This piece is contrasting in the first section being huge and powerful, not going soft at all, and the middle section showing variety of color and dynamic. Is is suppose to be loud and fast, he plays it the closest to what Rachmaninoff intended.
He's brilliant but I think he plays everything really fast when it doesn't always need to be, I've heard a much better version of this by Alexeev and it's not as rushed, you can hear much more of the actual piece. Nevertheless he's still fantastic.

Ignoring for the moment the several fallacies of logic in your comment, Jorgito, I must agree with the person to whom you responded: his technique is good. Granted. He can play quickly and impressively. True. But his playing is predictable, not unique in its interpretation; he plays here as though he were a highly dexterous robot, as though the "more" that he had been striving for were simply speed and not expression. He just plows through this piece; there is not much of true artistry in this.
TheJoyfulPianist: If you do not have technique or beauty in sound and technical precision, then "more" cannot be achieved; however, Evgeny Kissin possesses more depth in his work than most other pianists. What else are you looking for?? If you can answer specifically what it is you seek, then by all means, speak, yet if you simply do not feel the majestic in his fingers, I suggest you get therapy.
That seems to be a reoccurring theme with great musicians. The best and brightest have all donned incredible hairdos. (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss's beard, Grieg, Liszt, etc.) Maybe that's where the talent comes from... Only joking!
Oh, geez. Kissin can play so marvelously, but in this case, he just banged it out as an encore and nothing more. Too bad. It's a beautiful piece when played properly.
Great music and a great pianist. Thank you for sharing.I share to my FB wall.

If you look at him, you would know he is the re-incarnation of Beethoven. But he happens to love Rachmaninov's music more.

Richter
