  • I want this video on my S758 unit.

  • mr johnson use to have the pick of destiny

  • @lorettosg nah... mr. Johnson is too awesome to have had the pick of destiny... I think the explanation is that he actually is the devil (;

  • Robert Johnson is amazing!

If you like delta blues, check out Rat Stomp :)

    youtube.com/user/ratstompmusic

  • from other galaxyssss!!!

  • wICKED SliDES

  • ask muddy waters, rolling stones and hendrix about his MIAIN influences, at the end of the day they will say the same 2 words......Robert Johnson

  • There is no question that Robert Johnson is one of America's greatest singer / songwriters genre be damned. Devil or no devil, he has no peer when it comes to singing and playing the guitar. This song is a perfect example.

  • but i cant understand it.. its not modern, i like the sound

  • Love the stuff..

  • Now we know where srv got his stuff .....lol

  • how can 4 people not like this, pete townsend is probably one of them !!!

  • this man is the reason i started playing guitar! blows my fucking mind and sends shivers down my spine.....in a good way!

  • Great Vid !!!!

  • Happy 100th Birthday, Robert Johnson!!!

  • The devil played the bass parts and mr. Johnson played all the slide licks....

  • @voodoochild53 uh dood. t'weren't nobobdy but Mr. Johnson playin' there all by his lonesome blue sef.

  • Wow, Youtube is telling me that Robert Johnson is playing at the Alberta Rose Theatre on 5/7/11. I'd pay to see that, I'll tell you.

  • I just posted a raw blues slide guitar song on my channel. It's called Underground and I think fans of Robert Johnson will like it. By the way, did anyone see the photo of Robert Johnson in the April issue of Guitar World? I was startled to see it, because I only knew of the two photos...but there's a third. It's a little worse for wear, but it's cool - he's posing with his guitar and Johnny Shines in 1935.

  • Just incredible shit!

  • legendary

  • Happy birthday Robert, hope there suppling you with plenty of booze & lady's down there. it can't be any worst then this shity cold world we live in with unemployment , gas prices going near $5.00, natural disasters stacks & stacks of problems up here!!!

  • I love to play and sing robert Johnson songs, i have my own version of me and the devil my voice is lower than his but the guitar is pretty spot on.

  • Man this is ace. Been listening to this guy all my life and still cannot figure how he can play those riffs and sing at the same time. I remember Keith Richards once said the guy must have had two brains and I agree! Awesome stuff, cheers for uploading!

  • wow

  • ROBERT JOHNSON WAS THE BLUES

  • How the hell does he play that and sing at the same time...

  • groovy blues!

  • my teachers said "write about ANYONE in the book"..... so i chose robert johnson... and he said "nooo, something older, more classical style.." SO I DROPPED THE CLASS... but i need it to graduate.... guess what i did next........ !!

  • whoever disliked this is just jealous

  • El puto amo

  • the guitar genius

  • I just have to thumbs up every video my teacher forces us to watch. Not bad tho...

  • I put up House's preachin the blues so people know what it was actually about

  • with this man the history of music begins

  • @ 1:49 to 1:51 how in the FUCK he did that sound on a 6 string acustic guitar ??????

  • @canecorsomob with a slide I think

  • @canecorsomob a slide and pissed off feelings

  • Can you imagine listening to this for the first time in that era? Hell this guy and others were the bedrock and foundation of the most original music ever made!

  • I listen to Robert Johnson and I wonder what if he hadn't died at 27? What if he'd played Carnegie Hall instead of Big Bill Broonzy. What if in the 1950's somebody'd put an eletric guitar in his hands...

  • @Odin029 that my friend, is an incredible thing to imagine.

  • @Odin029 noone playes an electric like he plays that flattop

  • @Odin029 That would have been too much for people to handle.

  • @Odin029 i soon as i read i said " oh shit"

  • @Odin029 Why would you want to ruin it by electrifying it? That's why it's so awesome...he don't need nothin but a guitar...

  • @Odin029 Makes you wonder doesn't it? Like what if Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan had lived longer? What if they recorded more stuff? But living in the land of what if's isn't very fulfilling is it?

  • @Odin029 And might I add: What if he had a world class guitar in his hands? I bet he probably played a real shitty guitar. There is a big difference in playing a good and a bad guitar...

  • @ElvisStillRules he played an entry level Gibson. Mind you that even budget Kays in those days were fine guitars (I know, as I have owned and played many). I think Robert Johnson could have made a Jew's Harp sound like the Second Coming.

  • @paddywhackrn Ok. Thanks for the information :-)

  • @paddywhackrn heh, try a wash tub wit a long stik nad one string laid out as six...

  • @Odin029 Number one. My dogs name is Odin. Second....I love comics and whats if are the shit. You hear the pickin' and think shit this cat did this on an acoustic and before he was 27...No shit.

  • @Odin029 he sold his soul, he had to go when he came a calling...

  • @Odin029 easy robert plamer

  • @Odin029 well listen to johnny winter he's very electrified robert johnson ,or listen to muddy waters buddy guy albert collins, hey u can even check me out junior hooker

  • @Odin029 LIKE MUDDY WATERS JOHNNY WINTER

  • @Odin029 I can't even make my electric sound this electric.

  • Woke with this song playing in head on Xmas eve!!!!

  • He plays the hell outta this song! One of my favourites, leaves me awestruck.

  • Stunning!!

  • still don't know how he did it... amazing.

  • Robert Johnson isn't just the King of The Delta Blues... He is the king of ALL the Blues!

  • BTW, repipepi...incredible images in this video: where did you come across them all?

  • Stephanpak - I agree with you.

The absolute genius involved in this level of playing is hard to grasp. It reminds me of the interview with Keith Richards: when he first heard this song, he said 'Man, that's good. Who's playing along with him..?'

  • hands down the most important song of the 20th century

  • I've travelled on so far, I just can't turn around...

  • i'm a decent guitarist but i could spend the next 10 years just practising this song and would never get anywhere near that sound. if RJ got his technique from the devil then i say thanks to the devil .....

  • I fucking hear two guitars, how the hell did he do that?!

  • @Kanarie1973

    Lol

The man sold his soul to the Devil.

Then the Devil played by his side.

    :-)

Actually it is the guitar and the reflection from the corner he was sitting more then likely.(sitting face first into the corner)

  • @mcoaxe1 dont ruin all the fun! he said himself that he sold his soul btw

  • @Kanarie1973 it was the devil playing by his side

  • you cant teach rhythm like that....its coming out of his bones! amazing endurance from the right hand...

  • @marcus38447226 i've got that too ;)

  • He loved singing about the devil didn't he.

  • Really,,,just 6 strings on that thing. Amazing.

  • hey i like this song..........great player guitar acoustic and greeting for robert you is real worshiper evil lucifer..........mysterious guitar too hell yeaaah.................

  • @3blackshadow1 your an idiot.... listenin to him... for once

  • Honey Boy Edwards, who was friends with Robert Johnson told me that Robert told people that he sold his soul so they would think he was mysterious. There ya go! Crossroads is about hitch hiking, and the devil is a white man, Hell hounds on my trail is about being chased by hounds literally. It's a romantic notion to think R.J. sold his soul for guitar mastery but it's all just B.S. If you could there would be all kinds of Robert Johnson's out there don't cha think?

  • ... and only 1 guitar!

  • I heard it several dozen times and I can certify he's singing nonsense... sounds great tho

  • nice, and good photo montage as well..

  • This gives definition to the word 'Chops'.

  • who the hell would dislike this?....fags lol

  • I wonder what RJ would of sounded like if he had an Electric Guitar.

  • @meotoko77 he'd of sounded like Muddy Waters "Electric Mud", check it out it's a great album

  • @Poopspoon420 thanks, I will.

  • Real Music

  • If like Robert Johnson then check out this clip for his song Crossroads:

    watch?v=gIubFU_dAac

  • fuck! that's mastery. "goin to the still'ry, stay out there all day"

  • i'm sure he just says "fuck you" instead of "but you" at 1:53

  • @themadplotter "You ain't never had 'em, I hope you never will."

  • This ones my favorite one of RJ!

  • Strangely enough, I sense Victor Van Vligt-I hope I spelt that correctly- may have been greatly inspired by Mr Johnson.

  • @Johnnystrychnine Don Van Vliet by any chance ? Captain Beefheart ?

  • @edmundsampo Yes, Captain Beefheart.

  • Damn. I wish I could play a guitar like that.

  • Love the comments on this one. What is truth, what is myth? I am impressed with this performance, just a very heartfelt and incredible pass that got cut. Looking at some of the other videos concerning Johnson's legacy is interesting, but seems to be a futile endeavour. Different people have different passions, but I think you are chasing a ghost. He was just a man who helped create a window into the soul of the South.

  • The king Robert Johnson took it away with this one.

  • This performance is indescribably good. It that amazes me no matter how much I listen to it. There's so much going on at the same time to think its a solo performance still blows my mind, he is doing the work of at least 3 separate people.. Everything about this track is pure kickass- the shuffling bass/percussion section, wild careening slide guitar melody, weird ass spooky vocals, tricky arrangement that makes one guitar sound like a band. To me this is the pinnacle of solo guitar.

  • Keith Richards once said that Robert Johnson's guitar work was like Bach on the bass and Mozart on the treble. I may have made a mistake here but the gist of it is correct. Mr Johnson was a genius and he gave us something wonderful. Robert Johnson was the King . . . not Elvis!

  • This song fukin rocks!

  • If you consider his direct influence in every aspect of blues music and rock and roll in general. there are no better blues players.

  • @west7productions you must be on some shit because what about sonhouse or elmore james or bb king....BB and elmore was influence by johnson. But Son h ouse inspired Johnson....

  • This is it GREATEs

  • probably his finest

  • See, now Howlin Wolf singing smokestack lightnin make a ton of sense from here on in.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • I keep coming back to this. Listened to this so many times but I still don't have a clue what the hell is goin' on after the 2. 35 mark.

  • at kraker109 i know what your talking about, i was tripping one night and had RJ being played in my room and i was walking down my hallway and their was just the smoke and light coming from my room and it was the most eerie/ weirdest moments of my life, i dont know why. I will admit his music gives me the chills sometimes just by how powerful and moving it is

  • he played like if he was fucking the sexiest woman in the fucking world

  • 2:41 i got a skull JUST like that, what is it off? i dno :S been trying to work it out for years

  • @bugz000 It's most likely a coyote.

  • but i live in the UK :P we dont have them here, i guessed a badger but seeing it in the US? :S maybe a dog? or a cat...

  • Ah, then yeah, the one you found is likely a dog that got out or lived in the wild. I was referring to the one in the video being a coyote. :B

  • im guessing a dog and a coyote are near the same thing, see the skill in that has lines down the nose, mines smooth which may indicate its a slightly different breed, meaning DOG :D

  • SKULL *

  • Robert is awesome....and you can really hear the influence of his mentor(one of them), Son House in this track.

  • My house is slightly haunted and I was playing r.j and started to hear whispering the rest of the night....I didn't get much sleep after that

  • you aint never had em! i hope you never will! fuckos

  • rhythm machine

  • It must be hard to play this song!

  • great video, especially the intro

  • I think we all know where Elvis and so many others got their style from the true inventor of rock & roll MR. Robert Johnson

  • OH WOW!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Ixtee1979 Indeed

  • this is great ... guys listen to the rock version of this great piece of music, just go to the homepage of steve hill and the majestiks ... great

    ... love it

  • Man this one here is off the hook, that pick up beat is like........whoooooooaaaa

  • This is my #1 robert johnson blues THE BEST

  • RJ is the king of the blues! funk and soul all in the groove... master of it.

  • NEVER STOP listening this type of MUSIC people!!!

  • my heart beat kept getting faster as this song went on..

  • you ain't never had 'em. hope you never will.

    R.J

  • damn listen to him moan and growl

not to mention that crazy ass slide

  • The Best!

  • amazing simply amazing

  • slide guitar god

  • devil must have tuned his guitar...

  • ledgend!

  • Well If you listen closely he does not just use a G or D or standard tuning. He has a tuning that is different. To get the tone he has, and the notes he hits you have to use a cross tuning, and I have to tell you it is not easy to pick out. That is why you can hear it think it is in open G or Open D or Standard however I am telling you it is not. No it is not incomprehensible, but I dare you to play one song of his note for note, and post it...comrade

  • man the runs in this song are great. slide too. I can play lil queen of spades easily. its just about being creative with what you have to work with. its the same riffs in a given song repeated with variations on the turnarounds and runs.

  • amen...

  • you gonna do it? Tell me all about it.....

    Classic!

  • Great video.

  • man,i get chills listening 2 this ,god bless..

  • yeah dude anyone who thinks playing RJ's stuff is easy just does not understand what he is really doing. You can easily play cheesy versions of his stuff but you can not play what he does easy if even at all. tell me what tuninh he is using first off then tell me how it is easy I have been playing for years can play blues in all sorts of tuning still for the most part have very little idea what he is doing check my vid see where i am at as a player then tell me it is easy

  • I play a 'not so cheesy' version by ear

    I'd say open D ?

  • id have to agree

  • Regarding his tuning, he use open G, open D and standard. Many think that his records are actually slightly sped up (also giving him his characterisically slightly higher voice).

No, it's not easy stuff. But it's not incomprehensible either... The other skill that RJ had was combining multiple bluesmen's styles.

  • lostintheblues...are you kidding me? there is nothing by robert johnson that is even close to easy..when you consider the three separate parts he plays on top of singing...dude ive heard it all now.

  • like consumption, killin me by degrees! /chills

  • well firstly bud, if you wan tto play blues you need to feel that pain that inspires that pain that drives that pain that gives happiness all of its flavor...you cant jsut go ahead and sing the blues if you havent ever or not in a state of depression ,heartache, or pain...it would just be not genuine

  • 1:28 - the blues is a low down achin' chill...i keep coming back to this song whenever think i'm making progress playing the guitar, it's a good reality check

  • the blues is a low down shakin chill

  • If you have not had em' i hope you never will - Son House

  • @arjhendrix like comsumption! killing me by degree!

  • Comment removed

  • OMG. I can't help but play this over and over again....

  • check out blind willie mckenzie

  • now this is how satan speaks

    praise this dude

  • Man, I bet a Doom metal or a death metal "a la cannibal corpse" cover of this song would be awesome. This guy really added a stone to the wall of metal and rock in general.

  • do you really think the front man screaming "the blues" makes sense for a death metal band?

    Doesnt fit bro.

  • Yep it makes sense to me, because I don't really care about having a death metal attitude, if it's musically relevent, it's all that matters to me lol! It's just that there are a lot of elements in that songs that would perfectly fit in a death metal song, like the high notes after the intro. And I'd also say that yeah, a death metal singer screaming "the blues" fits it. or at least it wouldn't disturb me. You've got the right to be a death metalhead and to have the blues lol!

  • I agree with you completely. i am a metalhead- most particularly death metal, and the parallels with that genre and the blues is apparent. death metal uses a lot of "blues notes" which is what gives it that hard hitting sound. i am acually trying to start a death metal band with a blues rhythm.

  • @fmrmullet haha i started a thrash band with a blues rythem last year and let me tell you its a shit ton of fun i definatly suggest you do it

  • @fmrmullet - well they say most genius are borderline insane, send me a link to this "deathmetal blues" and if it works ill update your status from "raving madman"(which is where you are at now) to "musical genius" , just poking a bit of fun mate, they are two very distant cousins, but curious you little observation there mate.

  • @fmrmullet a metal band with a blues rhythm = everytime i die.

  • @fmrmullet ugh..... metal is all simple but fast guitar riffs, screaming, and double bass pedal. blues actually takes talent

  • @LittleBlackSparrow

Idiot. Every style of music takes talent and skills. Metal has its own values, blues has its own values. Don't down play the value of music, just because it isn't of your own personal taste.

  • @LittleBlackSparrow If you really think that, you're a fucking moron.

  • Yeah, I'm agree with you. The very speedy way he plays the guitare in this song could perfectly fit with heavy or death metal.

When you listen to this song, you can easily understand why Robert Johnson inspired generations of guitarists and rockers!

  • i love death metal but i dont know about all that

  • here s the basic the rest is all up too us.. g

  • How the fuck can he play like that!!! I can't even air guitar it!!
