Thank you posting this video. Helps a lot. I was wondering what they look like from outside the car. (I don't have tinted windows and they look bright).
Folks, If you draw power from the dash lighting you should be able to dim the Autometer gauges with the dash lighting. Some cars have reverse ground for the dimmer so you can't connect them to the factory lighting (like Toyota for example) so in that case Autometer makes a dimmer specifically for their gauges. I used it on my supercharged 4Runner and am able to dim the Autometer gauges to match the factory illumination.
You got it wrong, man. Mech vs electric is not talking about illumination, it's talking about the way in which it reads temp, boost, pressure ect. Mechanical gauges actually bring the fuel pressure, or oil pressure, or boost into the cabin through lines to be read at the gauge, while an electric will read at the source and send signals back to the gauges. Most everyone uses mechanical boost gauges, while fuel pressure and temperature gauges electric is preferred.
prob. the most informational vid i've seen on youtube about any gauge. can't tell ya how many times i see vids that are like 12 sec. long w/ the driver just turning the car to accessory. you sold me on the cobalt line, well for boost anyways. i already have an AEM UEGO a/f gauge, which is pretty sweet too. hey good luck on the build man. post it when yer finshed, love ta hear that sucker turn over. great vid.
Have you had any experience with the other autometer gauges? I am debating between the sport comps, the sport comp II's, and the cobalts. Possibly the Z series. I have a white and blue foxbody, so the blue would really set off my car... plus I hate white face gauges, I think they are tacky. So is your stang boosted?
I do have experience with white faces. Autometer white faces aren't too bright if you get the right one, but are a bit import for my taste. Sport comps are always a classy domestic choice - these are just a lot brighter. Stang is 10.5:1 compression N/A with cams and ported heads + bolt on. I built a forged 4.7 and have a 1900 TVS blower + fuel system/blower cams all in boxes. I just need the time and a daily driver to put it all in.
That will be sick when you get done! I love the 4.6's. They are excellent motors. So your running an automatic? Do you have a shift kit at all?
And the only reason I am straying from the pro-comps, sport-comps, and z-gauges is because they have the "around the dial" lighting which, I imagine, is pretty dim at night.
Yeah, it's a built stg II 3200 stall auto. Comp II's just illuminate the letters/numbers which can be pretty bright. Def enough to spot easy enough. Just there's not a lot of style to em. On the other hand, these have a lot going on for better or worse. Pretty nice with just two, but i have boost pressure and fuel pressure cobalts going in soon and it may look like a circus going on. we'll see.
Yeah that is what attracts me to the cobalts, the nice color and the visabliity. How do you like the 3200 stall? I am planning on either buying a new AOD or rebuilding mine, but am unsure about what RPM stall convertor to get. I am planning on putting down about 400hp at the wheels with a On 3 Performance turbo kit w/T70 turbo upgrade.
With a T70 i'd defintiyl go for a 3500/3600 stall depending on cams and heads. It depends on where your peak torque in, then the closer your stall rating is to your peak torque the more drastic it is. But on a T70 set-up you'll likely have peak torque pushed up a bit so raising the stall to a 3500/3600 wouldn't be very heavy at all.
Since the 5.0 block is only good for about 450-500hp, I am keeping the internals stock until I can afford a dart block. The peak torque should be around 3100-3300rpm. So the stall needs to be slightly higher than the peak torque?
I was talking for a 4.6 Usually stall is lower than peak torque rpm. On a 5.0 a 3200 stall will be more drastic than on a 4.6. What leads you to believe it'll be around 3100-3300 if you only have 302 cubes pushing a T4 70mm with stock heads? Just trying to figure it out.
I had been reading somewhere that a guy had a single turbo stock 5.0 and he was putting down similar numbers. I may be wrong though because that does sound a little high.
Similar numbers to what? We just said rpms range. My guess is a stock 5.0 is going to have to huff and puff a bit to spool that T70 which would push the torque curve up higher.
get vid bro... i can say you probably the only person i've seen yet to give valuable info as far as gauges. i just put a blower on, so it's time to start looking at some gauges. i think i'm sold on cobalt series. where did you by them from and how much? i know the wideband's going to be the low blow as far as cash goes.
Thanks! I try to provide my perspective on what i'd care about when looking for a set. I got my wideband from streetunit and it was the cheapest around (may not be anymore), i have a discount code too, just pm me.
im thinking about getting some cobalt series gauges can u even see them in the dark.cause i saw some blue ones they were real bright and u couldnt see them but i found some red 1's u can see them clearly and there bigger.but the problem is do u wreckon a blue car with 2 tone up from the windows(black) and blue racing seats with red gauges will look good. cause i think blue will look good(blends with car)
red goes nice with 2 tone but than i might have to get diff interior...if u no what i mean?
is the non wideband air/fuel ratio gauge realy trash or is it some what usefull? i know the price diff is almost 200. also is your mustang a 5.0 or 4.6?
It's not just the display, the real difference is the measuring tool. A narrow band can't really tell you much more than the ECU was caliberated to measure, which is sqwat. It's good for telling you in general terms if you're way lean or way rich, but not for telling you you're at 13.6 a/f rather than 12.4 which could mean a piston at wide open throttle if your tune is drastic enough.
Why would you need it on a stick? They don't need to monitor temperature. I'd recommend it for any built transmission, or a vehicle that tows often. If you have a stock transmission the temps are likely higher until you get a stacked plate trans cooler, which you should get asap, trust me.
well, you see, I have an 08' mustang GT. I wanted to get a shift kit to make it hold the gears longer, but I don't think there is any kits for the 5-speed auto. Any advice on boosting my car's power (besides exhaust, and cold air intake)?
You need a handheld tuner to take advantage of that cold air intake anyways, so getting one will allow you to boost up your line pressures on the auto which firms up the shifts.
Yes i do, B&M stacked plate. The temps in the vid are a bit off. It runns arout 170 on the freeway in warm weather, 160+/- in cool weather. 180 or so around town sprited driving. Ballz out around town 190-192. Can stay as low at 150 in cold weather/ at night.
I want to get these gauges for my Ram. Your vid has helped me out on deciding. Your stang sounds great. I have a 94 GT and 99 V6. I want to build a 514 for the 94. Thats going slower then I hoped.
looks sweet man :) I'm impressed. I like the guages stacked on the left side... Too bad your in Cali, tho, and can't tint down those front windows like I can to about 10% hahah
i like the cobalt C2's

Nice gauges. The air/fuel ratio moves around too much. I have one of those, and wow.. it's distracting. I got use to ignoring it, except under wot.

You can hook up a resistor to those leds so they won't be as bright.

hello big question i just bought autometer cobalt series vac/ boost gauge part number is 6103
its full sweep mechanical my question is will it light up at night???
cstwynos3 2 years ago
It will light up. When it lights up depends on the power source you tap into, tap into the light knob power source for it to only light up at night.
MustangAficionado 2 years ago
really reason is bc the electrical ones that light up is like 200. the one i bought was like 70 and its says mechanical full sweep

Do you get a lot of glare from the gauges? Are they pretty easy to read at a glance?
78SilverBronco 2 years ago
Very easy to read at a glance. There is a good amount of glare tho, this type of blue light is pretty blatant at night.

Wideband is a air to fuel mixture gauge (lean or rich ect.). Trans temp measures the transmission fluid temp in the trans pan.
