@motorcycle69ful, I'm not sure why NASA would want Grissom murdered since he was known as the most enthusiastic guy about Apollo--so enthusiastic that he complained about anything that slowed the progress. But if they did want to kill him, would it make sense to do it by ruining their multimillion dollar CM, set the program back 2 years & kill 2 other valuable astronauts in the process? Doesn't cyanide or gunshot sound easier?

@hunchbacked You may have something between your ears like we do, but in your case it's not a normally functioning brain. "Tricks" like slow motion and wire supports simply can't mimic how things actually behave in a true 1/6g vacuum environment. Not even today, at least not yet, and certainly not with 1960s film or video technology.

You can't say that Apollo was possible just from our having made computers very small. But when you look carefully at everything it required, you realize it all did come together in the 1960s. Computers were just one of those necessary components.
Apollo actually didn't innovate as much as people think. Off-the-shelf technology was used whenever possible to meet the schedule, and the money flowed freely.

First: Have You seen any stars on the photos shoving the ISS, Shuttle, Gemini or other spacecraft in Earth orbit? No. Why? If You have ever handled a camera You should know. A sunlit spacecraft or planetary surface is so much brighter than the faint stars. To catch the stars on film, You'll have to overexpose all sunlit objects, so they would turn out as white, blurry blobs.

E.g. he recently conceded that Apollo voice comms uses VOX (voice operated keying). But it's rare, and never anything substantial.
I know that many Apollo fans are people who reject religion, especially religious fundamentalism.

@YDDES I would have liked to see a transition to a more sustainable lunar exploration program because there still is interesting science to be done on the moon. But Apollo was designed to beat the Russians there regardless of the cost, and much of the technology simply wasn't what you need to stay there a long time, sustainably and at reasonable cost. Example: look at how spacesuits were cooled: by evaporating water into space. Water, probably the most valuable substance on the moon!
@ApolloWasReal During the lunar flights, NASA planned to extend the Apollo program with unmanned "Apollo trucks" to transport more equipment, bigger rovers and consumables. They also suggested small one-man flyers using left over fuel from the descent stages to extend the astronauts exploring range.
When the Shuttle program started, NASA also planned "tugs", spaceships that would transport men and material between Earth orbit and Moon.
@ApolloWasReal ...continuing: Those plans clerly shows that Apollo, to NASA, was no "one shot" project. If it hade been a fake, they wouldn't have wasted money and time on making up these future plans.
Furthermore, there were much faster, cheaper (and more dangerous) methods than Apollo suggested to reach Moon before USSR. Why didn't NASA "fake" one of those instead and save money?
@YDDES What faster plans? I remember some far-out proposals to send a volunteer on a one-way trip until NASA figured out how to get him back but they didn't go anywhere. It's not that the government (or at least the military) couldn't consider an individual pilot as non-expendable, but only as long as they remain anonymous. Abandoning an astronaut on the moon who'd just become world famous would be a PR non-starter.
Now I hear of astronauts volunteering for 1-way Mars trips.
@ApolloWasReal There were quite detailed plans made to use a Gemini spaceship as mothership and a one-man, open lander (no pressurized cabin, only spacesuit). The astronaut would just land, step out, get some small samples, take some photos and return to his buddy in the Gemini. Gemini was ready, a much smaller rocket than the Saturn 5 would be needed. Faster, cheaper, but more dangerous. Also, it wouldn't have given much, scientifically speaking.
@YDDES Fascinating! Sounds a little bit like the (failed and then denied) Russian attempt at a manned lunar landing, with a 1-man "mini LM".
There's so much that could be done to make a manned lunar base sustainable. My biggest objection to the Apollo model (and copied by Constellation) is the single-use LM. A lot is invested to get a LM to lunar orbit, and then it's thrown away because the tanks are empty. We need some sort of reusable ferry between lunar orbit and the surface.
@ApolloWasReal Such an LM would need much more fuel. Until enough water could be found and processed to fuel in permanent fuel plants, tankers would be needed to go alongside the manned ships to Moon, I'm afraid.
@PitBullDanger Did nothing else with Apollo technology? What planet have you been on for the past 40+ years? Apollo carried the first all-integrated-circuit computer; during the 1960s they bought about half of all US IC production. The microprocessor and personal computer revolution started just a few years later, and that wasn't a coincidence.
That much Apollo technology is utterly obsolete actually shows how successful it was.

9:29 It takes over 1 second for radio signal to cover distance between the Earth and the Moon. Which means it will take 2 second to travel back and forth. There is no such delays in many communications in this video.

The sequences can be shot in normal gravity, just with tricks.
The sequences could be shot in a closed environment, but there is also the possibility to turn the blue sky to black.

"Tricks" like slow motion and wire supports simply can't mimic how things actually behave in a true 1/6g vacuum environment. You can't say that Apollo was possible just from our having made computers very small. But when you look carefully at everything it required, you realize it all did come together in the 1960s. Computers were just one of those necessary components.
Apollo actually didn't innovate as much as people think. Off-the-shelf technology was used whenever possible to meet the schedule, and the money flowed freely.

First: Have You seen any stars on the photos shoving the ISS, Shuttle, Gemini or other spacecraft in Earth orbit? No. Why? If You have ever handled a camera You should know. haahhahahha, they landed on the moon in 1969 and for 42 years they did nothing else with this tehnology they ought to have labs on the moon and Mars at least that. and they did not repeat the flight again hahaha, only stupid people belive this.

@YDDES I would have liked to see a transition to a more sustainable lunar exploration program because there still is interesting science to be done on the moon. But Apollo was designed to beat the Russians there regardless of the cost, and much of the technology simply wasn't what you need to stay there a long time, sustainably and at reasonable cost. Example: look at how spacesuits were cooled: by evaporating water into space. Water, probably the most valuable substance on the moon!

@ApolloWasReal During the lunar flights, NASA planned to extend the Apollo program with unmanned "Apollo trucks" to transport more equipment, bigger rovers and consumables. They also suggested small one-man flyers using left over fuel from the descent stages to extend the astronauts exploring range.
When the Shuttle program started, NASA also planned "tugs", spaceships that would transport men and material between Earth orbit and Moon.
Nothing came to be, because of no funding.

@ApolloWasReal ...continuing: Those plans clerly shows that Apollo, to NASA, was no "one shot" project. If it hade been a fake, they wouldn't have wasted money and time on making up these future plans.
Furthermore, there were much faster, cheaper (and more dangerous) methods than Apollo suggested to reach Moon before USSR. Why didn't NASA "fake" one of those instead and save money?

@YDDES What faster plans? I remember some far-out proposals to send a volunteer on a one-way trip until NASA figured out how to get him back but they didn't go anywhere. It's not that the government (or at least the military) couldn't consider an individual pilot as non-expendable, but only as long as they remain anonymous. Abandoning an astronaut on the moon who'd just become world famous would be a PR non-starter.
Now I hear of astronauts volunteering for 1-way Mars trips.

@ApolloWasReal There were quite detailed plans made to use a Gemini spaceship as mothership and a one-man, open lander (no pressurized cabin, only spacesuit). The astronaut would just land, step out, get some small samples, take some photos and return to his buddy in the Gemini. Gemini was ready, a much smaller rocket than the Saturn 5 would be needed. Faster, cheaper, but more dangerous. Also, it wouldn't have given much, scientifically speaking.

@YDDES Fascinating! Sounds a little bit like the (failed and then denied) Russian attempt at a manned lunar landing, with a 1-man "mini LM".
There's so much that could be done to make a manned lunar base sustainable. My biggest objection to the Apollo model (and copied by Constellation) is the single-use LM. A lot is invested to get a LM to lunar orbit, and then it's thrown away because the tanks are empty. We need some sort of reusable ferry between lunar orbit and the surface.

@ApolloWasReal Such an LM would need much more fuel. Until enough water could be found and processed to fuel in permanent fuel plants, tankers would be needed to go alongside the manned ships to Moon, I'm afraid.

@PitBullDanger Did nothing else with Apollo technology? What planet have you been on for the past 40+ years? Apollo carried the first all-integrated-circuit computer; during the 1960s they bought about half of all US IC production. The microprocessor and personal computer revolution started just a few years later, and that wasn't a coincidence.
That much Apollo technology is utterly obsolete actually shows how successful it was.

9:29 It takes over 1 second for radio signal to cover distance between the Earth and the Moon. Which means it will take 2 second to travel back and forth. There is no such delays in many communications in this video.
