RESULTS NOT TYPICAL...They do not mention all the people who have tried to use the results and have been ignored by doctors. Ask them why they are compelled to say " The tests have not been cleared or approved by the FDA but have been analytically validated according to CLIA standards. The information on this page is intended for research and educational purposes only, and is not for diagnostic use."
The surveys are interesting but you know everyone is not going to be totally honest. The surveys made me yawn about half way through the questions so they might be good used as a sleep aid. LOL!
I agree with the wording of their surveys. I don't think the physical sciences put as much thought into survey construction as much as the social/behavioral sciences.
I wonder how they came up with the association of breastfeeding---I am all for it and all but people need to chill out about promoting bfding. Some mom's can't handle it physically or mentally and they shouldn't feel guilty about it. Like most things with us ladies it's a personal choice that's nobody else's business.
Wow. What an interesting video. Definitely subbing, and I'm interested in this genetic testing despite not being a "sciencey" nerd. Though I do love physics...
Though I am in no way trying to criticise, just responding to the issues you brought up in the video. Tremendously cool video none the less. It is a fascinating area of science. More of this please!
Also it's likely that snps and satellites favoured for ancestry assessment differ from those used for health assessment. This makes me doubt that they'd bother running the entirety of test as they would with the full package. It's likely they'd just select and amplify the regions of interest. Tracking ancestry usually involves using regions of highly variable and non selective mitochondrial DNA ensuring that any variation observed is the product of random mutations and not natural selection.
I do know for a fact that they run the same test for all versions. The company had confirmed this. Also this lets them have all the same data for the research they do on the site regardless of what version the person bought.
@zlyoga Hmm, that's a little sneaky. If I were to opt not to receive any information relating to health I'd like to think that they weren't going to compute and use that data for themselves. It's kind of getting to the point where we're able to find out things that we really shouldn't know. In a sense it allows for a kind of discrimination that goes beyond race, religion, age, or sex, but that is based on our fundamental nature. I don't really like it.
My point is though that it's not possible to separate it out. If a half identical region match with someone else gets found in the relative finder tool some of those snps may also be related to health traits, but you wouldn't be able to use that ancestry tool if they hadn't run that same data.
@zlyoga In my experience of relation and ancestry tests the areas used for comparison are largely non-coding for reasons that I stated previously with regards to mitochondrial DNA. My point being that it would be hard to extrapolate anything diagnostic of health issues from a nucleotide sequence that is not known to correspond to any particular gene. Then again, I am still an undergraduate. ;)
mitochondrial DNA though has limited usefulness. It only tells me about my mother mother etc. line. 23andme's ancestry tools have much greater depth than that because they look at more genetic information.
Yes I am aware of the maternal inheritance of mtDNA but I am not proposing the exclusive use of it. Around 95% of the human genome is non coding and more than suitable for use when studying ancestry without the inference of anything remotely medical. I do not believe that they are doing what they are doing because it's the only way, but the way in which they benefit most from it.
Had you ever considered that maybe by dividing health and ancestry gives people the option of choosing not to find out about potential health risks they may or may not develop in the future? I myself would be a bit sceptical about publishing that sort of information, though more because of concerns towards insurance issues than personal fears. I can't imagine it being a very good thing if potential employers were to pass judgement on you based on your predicted longevity.
Nice wrap up! I really like 23andMe. I feel that it was a good investment. I really want my dad to send his spit away too but man it is expensive! price increase is a huge bummer... glad i bought when I did.
I totally agree with you about the surveys. It bugs me that I have some incomplete ones, but the questions really are bogus.
I have the breastfeeding thing too... but I was breastfed. The first thing I did was thank my mom. You seem to be getting along alright without it... :)
Form the way I look at it 500 dollars is at least A weeks worth of work. Which does not even consider gas rent food car. So for me to do it for personal gratification would be ineffective. However if it would help to being about A better future of technology maybe it would be worth it.
When I first found out about 23andme, it was actually $1000 for the full kit, so $500 for a full kit now is an awesome price for me. I don't really have any money for things like this, but the idea has always had my interest. Just seeing that it's going down in price is nice to see that maybe someday we'll all be able to afford this kind of thing. :)
The bit on the raw data reminds me of a documentary I saw a while back. A man had an awful illness, so a doctor did tests on him. The doctor found that the man had extremely rare DNA that could possibly cure a certain disease. The doctor conned the man into giving up more of his DNA.
It was narrated by David Suzuki, I can't go much further because I don't remember it well. The documentary eventually raised the question 'Do we really own our bodies?', or something like that.
As far as I know my family has always been in the same region of germany for at least the last century but it would be so cool to know if a far relative moved to America or something like that and is now in some way included in the 23andme database.
Although I'm really white I could have some african, arabian, indian or chinese ancestors and they could've all had different aspects of me :)
Did 23andme actually tell you about where your ancestors could come from?
It gave me a haplogroup (I'm H1*) which tells about ancestry but it tells about ancestry from tens of thousands of years ago.
I have been able to see some idea about where people were from though based on people who've I've matched with on relative finder. Because they also have relatives from the same locations.
Also a chart about global similarity where it places you on a map in relation to how similar you are to certain reference populations.
Great follow-up commentary and discussion! I'd been holding out for the success-prompted drop in pricing so that price inflation was an unfortunate development. I'm dying to get genotyped though, if you'll pardon the cliché.
I always get excited when I see your face pop up in my subscription box.
I liked this video a lot. The things you talk about have nothing to do with my field of study, but you explained everything so well that I never felt lost.
I'm glad you are excited about what you are studying, and I hope, in my heart if hearts, that you go on to do great things with your knowledge.
