Anything that gets pulled into the engines can cause the blades to shatter - those things are spinning damned fast. At the very least, you lose that engine - if the broken shards puncture the engine wall or the fuel already in the engine explodes, you can lose both.

That's why AA missiles aren't just warheads - they also fill the air around an aircraft with shrapnel in the hopes of doing this.
