all the haters that arent turned on ought to be grateful to people like Phish.... of course they wont be the Grateful Dead, you can only be yourself. thats the problem with human beings, were so caught up in what we dont have or whatever negativity seems to be around, they should be grateful to phish that they are at least doing their part to keep the scene alive. and theyre brilliant players themselves! were all humans! the universal jam is what its all about! even Jerry said so himself!!!!!!!
Some musicians lack talent or vision yes kids, but in the upper echelons of musical talent, its all aboutpersonal taste, is Jerry better than Trey? Who T/F knows? Let Allah sort it thru, just kick back and enjoy iy all, no sense in trying to sort a list except for "suck vs. cool"
I love how they all know to rest at 7:26. Phish lets us in to their intimate knowledge of the Dead in choice, subtle ways. Between the two bands, America has produced two of the greatest improvisational guitarists EVAR!!!! Both masters...
I wonder if Phil Lesh ever goes by the name Phlesh for short....might be suitable since he was in a band with skeletons...Maybe I'll start a metal band called "Rotting Corpse".
GREAT bands. Let's keep it real.Grateful Dead, poineers, inventors of a genre all their own, a stew of aural America. Born in a time of great social and psychic change. They have Robert Hunter, literary genius with Steinbeckian sensibilities. He created a mythos, a Grateful Dead world, accross hundreds of songs, Jerry Garcia, a once in a thousand years personality and talent, the most innovative bass player, and a drum engine that was unparrelled any where in rock. But Phish is a pretty good band.
We are all so lucky to have had the Grateful Dead and still have Phish touring. I wish Phish would quit shunning the West Coast.....once a year is not enough. They all kick ass and make for a hell of a good time. Jerry is well, Jerry and Trey is a hell of a guitar player. Phil is still my favorite bass player but Mike Gordon is an amazing bass player also.
Grateful Dead and Phish are two of my favorite bands. When my son's friends ask me which I feel is the better band, I honestly cannot compare. One band brought me joy, the other band brings me joy. That is all that matters.
"I did a bass duet with Mike Gordon when I sat in with Phish. I generally abhor bass duets, but it was marvelous- it was actually beautiful. ...we just played it by ear. He knows how to get out of my way, and I know how to get out of his. It was like two hippopotami humping!""
Ouch, harsh cut at the end, but really great to see this on youtube! Thank you. I was at this show and as good as it sounded here it sounded 100x better in person!
I love when Phil sings! Phish and Grateful Dead are my 2 favorite bands so this is quite a treat! I would kill someone to be have been able to see this.
I just missed this show. Had to take off to NH for a fall internship. A tour buddy happened to have high quality AUD tapes of the whole run, though. Nice "consolation prize."
i bet if jerry lived alittle longer he would have been jammin out there with phil playin some shakedown or some dear mr fantasy or him and trey dueling on a cavern or a possum.
@jojojigaboo I love the Grateful Dead too. And grew up listening to them with my parents. My Finnish wife's name is Stella, that's all. She thinks Stella Blue is a wonderful song and really had to listen to the poetry quite a few times before the imagery worked in her head. I had to explain a lot of American cultural phrases to her. And we love Phish too.
Look. Listen, just leave us alone, ok? If you don't like Phish so much then write your hate mail to Phil Lesh and not to me, cool?
Phish isn't exactly new. They been at it almost as long as the Dead if you think about it. From the late/mid 1960s - the mid 90s and from the Early 1980s-today. Thats nearly 30 years on both accounts
all you cats should just take this for what it actually is. no player is going to sound like another- just accept the jam for being cool in its own way! nuff said

the band, phish is one of the best jambands i have ever seen....i like the band that started the genre a little better....yes ive seen the grateful dead when they just couldnt get their shit together or they were just phoning it in,but ive seen them when they were just other-worldly also..listen to jerry some and get back to me.....hahahahaja
sounds good but you get a sense that theyre just walking in their sleep....phoning it in......trey's a good player, but he's too slick....sterile...jerry's charm was in the occasional muffed, buzzed note here and there.
kevin rocks you are totally on point . i went to roughly 200 phish shows , including this one (front row , take that haters). after '97 every phish show was a phone in. it became their job and all the spark was gone. i remember standing at shows and being like " people think this is good??????" they were just pissing in people's ears , but they (the fans ) were so blinded by hero worship they lost all reletivity. if everyone says its great , its great right??? wrong.
luckily they are not phoning anything in anymore, not like I believe that comment to begin with but the new tour is proving this band loves what they do and take it too seriously to just go through the motions.
i'm a huge phish fan, but jerry was indeed the man. just compare this to holloween 1890 @ radio city. J slaughters em slowly. this version feels like a dissolvin g ambien
What with the bushy hair and jiggly quality of the vid (but many thanks for posting it), I thought Phil was Mike for a split second! Once I saw the glasses though, I came to my senses. Excellent song, excellent execution, but never the same w/o Jerry :( RIP
