Because of the way their brain works geckos only actually "see" food if it is moving. A tray of dead bugs won't move so they will not be seen, only smelled, and probably not eaten. My gecko has eaten dead crickets from a battery powered vibrating tray that they sell at the pet store, but I don't use it anymore.
My friends leo just passed at the ripe old age of 28. If your husbandry is right, and you feed them as you need and keep them in sanitary conditions they live for quite some time.

@Idkwhat2putt You can dust the dead crickets but the ones I use come in a can and are already gut loaded with calcium so it's optional at that point.
