  • The 43-tones are never really used in a pandiatonic manner, in the way that one thinks of highly chromatic music. Sung parts are generally pentatonic modes, which Partch tunes in a just-intoned manner by selecting those of the 43 tones that make for the most consonant intervals at a given time.

    I saw the revival of this piece in NYC last year, and that chanting choir was done by untrained singers, along with the instrumentalists.

  • It must be difficult to learn to sing in a 43-tone tuning system.
