Gilgamesh had a very powerful philosophy. We are not Gods who live forever. We die so we might as well make the most of it and not be the one who hides safely like a coward. I love it!
helvis213 who did the fabulous bas reliefs of Gilgemish before the gates of the underworld with the scorpions and diving for the Plant of Immortality and so forth ? all this art is amazing but those are just haunting somehow
I think the story is basically about humanity and as you probably know, sexuality plays a large role in most people's lives. Throughout ancient history, many cultures had very liberal attitudes toward sex and as such, the text utilizes that element of life which had different meanings and implications than our current Western attitudes allow.
Cont' I think Gilgamesh's insistence on sleeping with brides before the groom is a device to show what an asshole he was before he was introduced to Enkidu
@helvis213 I like your answer. And of course, the legend (if not reality, though not proven) of "Droit de seigneur" or the Lord's Right (to take the first night with a virginal bride) persisted right up through the Middle Ages. Translations of the Epic of Gilgamesh are all from the 1870s or later, so this idea was kept alive - at least in the popular imaginations of peasants everywhere, and I'm sure it was quite terrifying for them to contemplate that it might be real!
@helvis213 yeah i got the same vibe there, its Gilgamesh's way of showing that he is supreme above other men, an therefore can do what he wants, even take a mans bride before him.
@helvis213 Added to that the fact that open sexuality was very common especially in te cult of Ishtar. In some celebrations, the priestesses would engage in sexual intercourse with many men as an offering and ritual to the gods. The same cult persisted even in Phoenicia under the goddess Ashtaroth.
@carlover1012 that is y the angels where cased from heaven to earth because of there lust 4 human women. when they had sex angels and human women they had giant children they r spoke about in genesis 6 vs 4 check if u don't believe me
@Frassbazz .and the book of Enoch, It was originally written in aramaic. it contains the account of the "watchers" and the giants in great detail. And their untimate fate!
And the Watchers have gone to the daughters of men upon the earth, and have slept with the women, and have defiled themselves, and revealed to them all kinds of sins, and have taught them charms. And the women have borne giants, and the whole earth has thereby been filled with blood and unrighteousness. 1 Enoch 9:8-9
@carlover1012 The ancient Sumerians were very technical a lot of their tablets talked about everyday life. a lot like a journal. Stuff like the things they seen that day. Stuff they bought at the store so on and so forth. So a lot of it talks about literally everything that they do. So a lot of Porn so to speak lol.
I'm afraid you need to consider that it's very important to apply historical criticism to every text, including the ancient ones - if you postulate that the events of Gilgamesh did not happen exactly as told (which I would strongly recommend), you should apply that same skepticism to other sources. That should include the Old Testament, or, for that matter, any document.
the bible?wich one?the jew/christian bible?the story of gilgamesh was writen thousands of years before the jew christian religion was ever invented, infact when the jews were manufactureing their religion they stole the story of "noahs ark" from the sumarians.thats why the jew bible puts an emphesis on killing anyone who talks to you about other Gods and religions.the jews want thier people to be ignorant cause then they would be easir to fool and control them!
just cause there are stories of floods around the earth dont mean the bible dont have the right answer, maybe all of these myths are twisted and the bible has the true version ? theres no way to prove conclusively so dont be so quick to judge
and if you were the God of the universe, wouldnt you want your people to not worship any other god beside you ?
Why would you believe a version of a story that is clearly taken from a much earlier version? I'd be inclined to believe the earlier version then a rehash 1700 years later.
Also, if there was a god of the universe, wouldn't he be supreme? Why would there be any other gods? Are you a polytheist?
See how how none of this shit makes any sense when it's taken literally? It's all about the metaphor and meaning of these stories. They were not meant to be taken literally.
what if gilgamesh was a true ancient giant? afterall in ancient times giants were common. there were kings written down in ancient texts from the old testament, (king og) that were 13 feet tal, king og's sons were 12- 11 feet tall each. so giants in the past is not fiction. however
, i dont believe all of the magical epic tales that are not normal to the human ear. but i do believe this gilgamesh was a true ruler who was a giant. even if he was a normal sized man he was obviously glorified in these stories
i was just being a realist. trying to be. but i really do believe in the tales. magic was around and powerful in those ancient times. anything could have happened.
To helvis213, thank you so much for putting these up. I had to read this for a World Lit class, and was having some problems keeping focus. This really helps.
To Gqgansterz10 the Epic Of Gilgamesh was written before the story of Noah. I've heard it's based on an actual king named Gilgamesh but other than that, most likely isn't true. The reason Noah's story would have been written later, was because Moses wrote it. The story could have been pased down, but it was actually written second.
Gilgamesh is the oldest story written and within it is the story of a great flood and much of symbolism was later taken by the writers of the Bible's Genesis, which borrows many ideas from previous Mesopotamian stories.
These stories were carried by traders across seas and along the silk road for thousands of years and different cultures have adopted and changed these stories to suit their own values and cultures.
Hope you enjoyed the epic. Check out some other videos
Yeah, it's pretty wild. Huge numbers, stated in repetition, like the long list of armor in the section above, is a poetic device employed by these early Near Eastern cultures, to illustrate mightiness.
Helvis, kudos for doing this series, my only complaint is your accent. Don't take that as a complaint; I'm a bit snobby only because I'd like to hear it with English enunciation. Maximum respect and thanks for your effort in doing this.
Well it's hard to say. We know there was a King named Gilgamesh and we know he is credited with building Uruk's great walls. Then, there's the whole search for Utnapishtim, the antediluvian Noah and the whole flood story. Maybe it's a blend? I've learned a lot answers usually lie somewhere between the two most obvious points. In any case, it's a great story, chock full of universal themes. I think it's the greatest story ever written. I'm glad you dig it!
I do. I can't say a lot of the popular theories are true...a la Sitchin(I think he's a charlatan-he doesn't even read cuneiform! believe it or not and people listen to him.) but there has to be some truth it. They are mentioned again and again. We need more people to read and translate the thousands of fragments and tablets that have yet to be read.
Well, I did find most of the texts Sitchin used and supricingly they do sound as Sitchin writes. I found texts of Magilum boats that a loaded sky high to bring gold to Nib(i)ru. Most are on the Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Literature (ETCSL).
However, there are some texts that Sitchin used and are not on that website and I cant find them anywhere else. What Sitchin basicly does is using texts that are already translated and interpretates some words a little bit different. Thats all.
Yeah, but my beef with Sitchin is this: He doesn't read the language he's interpreting. He changes the meanings of words and phrases with broad strokes as he puts them to a Hebrew context and worst of all, he picks out tiny passages of long poems to bolster his argument when the remaining lines he conveniently leaves out, conflicts with his assertion.
I can dig what the guy is saying, but he doesn't make a good academic argument to support his theories.
