Long after all these vets have passed on, this old girl will stretch her legs and serve as a reminder to what these brave men did. Always remember the Few
Sadly, Mark and 4 of the wartime pilots seen in this clip & the wartime 16 Sqn Engineering Officer, have since passed away. Pete Petrie, Mike Wetz and Norman Godfrey all flew Spitfire PL965 during 1945. Norman Godfrey also flew the "R-R Mk XIX" PS853. Jimmy Taylor who is seen on the right when the photograph was being taken in front of PL965, was a pilot with 16 Sqn and appeared in the BBC2 programme "Operation Crossbow", screened on 15th May 2011. P Teichman flew PL965 in the programme.
Wonderful display by a master - RIP Mark, you are very much missed. Love the interview, the chaps remind me of my father recounting tales of their wartime service. Thank you for posting.
It´s so sad that Mark and Ray are gone. My father knew them both and I grew up meeting these two at airshows in the 80´s and 90´s. Makes me sad because my
father has now passed away and watching these clips brings back so many memories. My father was a pilot and his interest of aviation caught me at a very young age. May the three of them rest in peace XXX
Agreed! I was at Wings over Wanaka in 1997 and saw a fine display put on my Mark's father Ray, in Sir Tim Wallis' Mk XVI Spitfire. Both Ray and Mark were perfect gentlemen - looking back it's like an era gone by.
Yes post Jan 99 I planned to go down to Wanaka for my first airshow there and then sadly heard later about Mark. I did see Ray fly again at another Wairarapa airshow though - brilliant :)
WHAT A GREAT GUY, I had the pleasure of flying a Display with him once and also 8 dog fights in the James Bond L-39 Albertros against Eddie Todds JP MK4 in Ireland, Eddie won though. Great Great Bloke.
Mark Hanna over cooked a loop in a ME109 at the barcalona airshow a couple of years ago.The 109 was to low and fire balled down the display line and he died in hospital a day or so after.
