  • does the american super nintendo play the pal version games ?

  • is it possible to remove the chip inside a super famicom cart and put it in a snes cart?

  • The european snes looks mostly like the super famicom. ^^

  • @PlatformerFreak, Only the text is different.

  • you can use this same mod for playing Japanese N64 games too.

  • 1098 vids?

  • @RanMatFri It's mostly the luck of the draw. The main cause of yellowing is the release of bromine from the flame retardants in the plastic. Some consoles just have more of this stuff than others. The good news is that you can actually reverse the yellowing process by using a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and oxiclean. Do a google search for retr0bright. The formula is free, and there are a lot of awesome before and after pics.

  • I did this mod over a year ago (thanks to you) and I didn't even have to open up the system :) I prob already told you that but there it is again lol ;)

  • I removed the tabs just going in the cartrage port without disasembeling at all

  • uh

  • I personally just take an old copy of Super mario world (got like 8 of them) take the cartridges apart, and exchange the guts :P

  • @nintendude1988 It's really a lot easier to just modify the SNES. As others have commented before, there is no need to go through the trouble of dismantling the console. Just go in through the top of the cartridge slot with needlenose pliers and rip the plastic tabs out. It only takes about 30 seconds :p .

  • @RanMatFri Mine hasnt either. Very little useage :P

  • I am guessing this would work as well with the Snes Jr. (model 2)

  • We in German have the same NICE Famicom Case :P

  • Europeans are shit out of luck with this mod.

  • You can just use some needle nosed pliers without even opening the system. Thats how I did it.

  • You can mod a super famicom and why would you do that? because i like the famicom better, i think it looks more stylish than the snes

  • Damn u sound tired, BTW both my snes controllers won't work pretty much in ethier port can it be fixed

  • @TheNews1990 Yeh just take it abart and remove the controller ports and put new ones in or is it your controllers?

  • @JZBEAST01 its the ports but I can't find new ports yet

  • @TheNews1990 Buy a shiity snes off ebay for 99 cents and just take the controller ports off it lol

  • The differences in the carts is only if ye live in the US, in Europe we have the same size as in Japan :P

  • @makedaevilmage and slower games... pal sucks

  • @deraickripper, That was Sonic only. The other games don't suffer from that. That was SEGA's fault. Now go back to your cave, NTSC troll.

  • @TheRealDutchOwner

nope super famicom games were faster than EU pal snes i had one as a kid and playing street fighter 2 at my friend's place was always a pain in the the ass cos it was clearly slower. and it's true for other games.

  • Can't you just take the circuit board from the japanese cart and put it in an american cart case? Well, i guess your way is more practical lol.

  • about 15 yrs ago in the mid 90s when my friends older brother melted those plastic pins with a hot knife or something and we were able to play dodgeball and dragonball z. pretty awesome. i had no idea there were all these diff japanese games back then. i just figured we all had the same games. pre internet

  • Many later SFC/SNES games have additional connector pins on both sides of the main circuit board (look at the connectors on Star Fox, for example), but the Game Genie does not have connectors for these additional pins. Therefore, it cannot be used as a pass-through device for those games when playing Japanese games on an American SNES and vice-versa. Also, it is a fact that NTSC games (USA/Japan) and PAL games (Europe/Australia) have lock-out chips preventing use on each other's systems.

  • the pins wont fit no?

  • Isn't there a lockout chip on the games?

  • um its only america with the bullshit games everywhere else has the "japanese" system. sucks to be you guys

  • A Game Genie can also be used, and it's tabs are a heck of a lot quicker to remove, just clip the tabs and you are ready to play imports without butchering the SNES in the end.

  • @Bloodreign1 i prefer ROMs. nothing to clip, save states, and built in game genie!

  • @AlirazaVideoGames And nothing to own and proudly show off to friends. I prefer not to be able to save at anytime (this was the way games were when I was growing up), and the GG is there for my import needs, but doesn't work for every game.

  • i did not have to mod my snes to play sfc games

  • I've used the plier method. It works great, and it's quick and easy to do.

  • Thoes this works for PAL games too ?

  • @gonzalo4to

Well PAL and SFC use the same cartridge design so i imagine it would

  • @MaidenFan24568 just because they are the same design absolutely does not mean they would work. PAL and NTSC are completly different things, research it. Dont just assume, that will only get you dissapointed and spreads false information to others.

  • @gonzalo4to Some PAL games like Terranigma won't work with it. In those cases, you'll need to buy a Pro Action Replay 2 or 3.

  • @gonzalo4to Absolutely no PAL region game will work on a NTSC console without some kind of universal adaptor or action replay, and even then, games like Terranigma will not work ever. You need to actually hard mod the system in order to get the later PAL games to work.

  • When I was younger I actually did the same type of thing but I didn't want to break any pieces off of my actual console so I broke the tabs off of my Game Genie and played the Super Famicom cart through it without altering the system. I just bypassed the code screen of the Genie and the game started up with no problem.

  • The only 3 famicom games i got they doesnt work whit this mod =(

  • the famicom is what the europeane super nintendo looks like :P

    i preffer the rounded cartridge

  • this may sound weird but can i do this to a nds to play original gb games?

  • Can I do this on the SNES 2?

  • i would have done a 1-minute video to explain how to cut those 2 plastic tabs quickly with small cutters, no need to open that thing! This video is way too long for nothing...i've done this trick in 2005-2006 to play Seiken Densetsu 3 on my SNES...

OR you can use a Game Genie and cut its 2 plastic tabs, but then you get the Game Genie menu everytime you want to play a game.

So far only 1 worthy game doesn't work with this, because of its own lockout routine programmed in it: Terranigma (PAL).

  • SFC cartridges and SNES PAL cartridges are the same, does that mean that i could play SFC games on my snes?

  • Comment removed

  • @Mario60665

no because they don't use the same lockout chip, also some games have the 50/60 hz check on startup.

  • @MrRetro90 well, shit!

  • i removed them with plyers then i used a lighter and burnt the plastic a little then i cut the plastic while it was still melted then when i got all of the plastic off i then soaked the piece in cold water and removed the black marks and sanded it it looks flawless

  • there is another method to play SFC on SNES. just cut out the tabs on a Game Genie

  • The european version has the same shaped games but it can't play ntsc...

  • why go through all of that trouble. Just hold the cover open, use a pair of 4-6 inch long needle nose pliers, grab hold of the plastic tabs and wriggle them back and forth. They will eventually break off and you can play SFC games flawlessly.

  • super famicom is like the english super nintendo

  • 2:22 American slots are always bigger than Japanese slots. Ask my dick.

  • does this work with PAL

  • @bowserjrfan123 no it doesnt it only works with the usa snes because the super famicom and usa snes are both ntsc the uk snes is pal.the usa snes was a different shpe on purpose to prevent the user playing japanesegames in the usa.

  • can i play SFC games on my european SNES without modifications??

  • I wish people did the mod this way more often. I've seen many Japanese SFC with 2 little slots/holes drilled on the back of the carts so that way they could play on American systems... which isn't very pretty for all those minty collectors out there. :(

This way is so much better.

  • it can play the Japan games fine... because if you look at the pin connector in the SNES you will c it like this --- -------------- --- the small pins on the edge are so it can run japan SNES games.

  • it can play the Japan games fine... because if you look at the pin connector in the SNES you will c it like this --- -------------- --- the small pins on the edge are so it can run SNES games.

  • Instead of buying all these old useless systems/games how bout u my a bigger house or even get a LIFE! smh fools these days tsk ..tsk.

  • @MokuSennin213 Its his hobby and besides most of those older games and systems are more fun than the current stuff.

  • @MokuSennin213 someones acting like a douche. Now, explain why you're on these types of videos if u hate this hobby, maybe some people can't buy a bigger house, or they don't want to,AND what does that have to do with the video jckass.

  • Hasn't everyone experienced a big thing not fitting in a smaller slot? :P

  • I see in the american cartridge MADE IN JAPAN, original obviusly, and the cartridge MADE IN MEXICO are originals too? thanx

  • Uk and Japan have the same kind of cartage and console usa looks better... the uk version is called the super nintendo to sooo.....

the tab's also help keep the games working

  • Bummer you have the counterfeited snes.

  • wow that is fucking clean snes. Ive had 2 that were brownish yellow on the top part under the reset and power button area.

  • all you need is needle nose pliers (make sure they are needle nose, otherwise you will fugg up the system and they wont break cleanly) and bend those suckers out, no need to unscrew the system.

  • Or you could just use a Game Genie.

  • I've never touched a US SNES cart/system/controller. I wanna get one some day

  • You talk like the Joker :B

  • And uh

  • Bring me back memories.

Remember when I was youger doing this.

  • Thats a very clean SNES, looks great!

  • @MarioLuigiSmashers: it's not, PAL region wont work

  • I wish i still had SNES!

  • Snesost is a channel made to upload nothing but snes/sfc in the most HIGHEST quality of listening for.

if you have a snes ost you want uploaded, send a request and well have up as soon as possible!

  • You use the word "Uh" "Um" way too much... lol I stopped counting after 30

  • Out of curiosity would a pal snes game work?

  • @Brendonwii no it wouldn't

  • Damn this is really cool !!! I am going to do it!!!

  • If you get a PAL SNES game it's the same shape as JPN SFC so you can play JAP games onto PAL console with no mod

  • @bus2800, nope, US and JAP are both ntsc with 60Hrz, but PAL console and the games are 50Hrz, so maybe some games work (with wrong speed) but most of the best games will detect it's wrong speed and they won't play. Only way around this is using adapter or internal region mod.

  • @anakuron Ino US & JP are NTSC but I trying to say that the JAP cart and console is the same size as PAL but most SNES or SFC are region locked if uno what I mean if you find games are region free

  • Hmm, you don't have to take it apart just use a needlenose pliers and pull it out.

  • Smart Video!Smarter than Me!

  • I just took my Game Genie and cut off the same plastic tabs just like inside the SNES.

I don't have any imports to play it with yet though.

  • why dont u just cut the a insert into th famicon cartrige so it looks the same as the us cartrige works

  • Nice

  • thanks for this..i just bought sonic blast man on ebay for a cheap price..now i gotta fix my americanSnes console to play it hjaha..im sure i can fix it though!..thanks luke.

    -Brian

  • Most look like this. Ha! Yours looks fresh out of the box new. Good to see somebody taking care of things. I bet it still looks like that nearly 2 years later.

  • damn, the american snes is ugly.

  • @Inszz But equally awesome in terms of everything else

  • @Inszz Really ?? how so because imo the other versions look ugly

  • omg thats awsome! is that all i have to do or is there some lock out chip or something? also could i use a dremel tool to take off the nubs? thanks!

  • i love the amirican SNES

  • same N64. same mod.

  • I just cut the pins off with a pair of pliers

  • would this work on any game i wanna play seiken densetsu

  • Is an amazing console! How do you keep the original color? Most SNES consoles get yellow with time.

  • Ofcourse Luke knows this, but i don't know about you guys commenting. But the super famicom carts are the same as PAL carts, such is the console. I'm not sure if this would make a difference due to Region/location.

  • hey guys check out my video response!

  • What kind of screwdriver was that with the Game Bit attached? I got my Game Bit yesterday and I know for damn sure I don't have that kind of screwdriver.

  • "The chip sizes are the same" - yes, not that it shows in the movie but perhaps you meant that the connectors are the same size.

  • I bought a modified Snes (pal) console a couple months ago. I can play jp and us games on it with 60 hz. Ive noticed that the japanese version of contra 3 lags alot on it so ive decided that ima buy a original super famicom instead. i think playing on a modified cause lag.

  • ok now Im confused, I have 2 "super famicom" games . top gear and mortal kombat, but both have the holes to fit in a super nintendo, im holding one right now and comparing the back label to your famicom game and its the same, was there a famicom games with the holes? also I remeber that I once rent rockman x , it was a famicom game and I played it on my super nintendo

  • is there anyway of playing PAL games on a NTSC snes with no adapters?

  • Another way.

Use a PowerPack unless if it's a non acceptable chip.

  • i miss super nintendo...

  • So if i do this game trick to my SNES 2 console then i can play both ntsc uc and super famicom games on it?

  • i remember doing this back in 91' i used a hot butter knife to melt a line then needlenose to pull the tabs out.

  • @skywarp187 I remember back in 91 I was doing something else with hot butter knifes XD can you guess what

  • the image seems to be more clear then the last one, did you change the camera ?

  • Dammit Luke, I search "Simple SNES mod" in google for a project to do, and first thing I see is this.

Damn you you crafty bugger :P

  • Hey i wanna play terranigma (PAL game only) on my american SNES could i do this to my SNES and play?

  • @keatonew

    No, it wont work

the pal version of terranigma was specifically made for the 50 hrtz pal console and, unless you mod you console by adding a switch, it won't work at all

I know, I have this game, a pal Snes and a US snes

if you try to play it on the US console it will say "this game pak is not designed for the super famicom and/or the Snes(US)

  • I did the same thing to my sega megadrive back in the nineties.

The Oz version had a square shape at the back where as yours were totally rounded. I used my mums nail file to file away the square section at the back of where the game goes in and boom.

I was so happy as nobody told me about it i sussed it out myself when i bought a cartridge that wouldn't fit!

I thought, fuck it, thats probably the only difference.

    And the rest is history.

I'd do a video but i dont even have it anymore.

  • You don't even need to resort to opening up the Super Nintendo. All you need is a pair of longnose pliers, and you can easily twist the tabs off. I did it on several consoles back in the 90's and it worked perfectly every time.

  • Thats what i did....

  • Oops, I didn't notice that you also mentioned going in with the pliers at the end of the video.

  • that second one is the same as mine but mine is a uk version

  • Unrelated but your SNES and the Mario WOrld game you showed are SO CLEAN! Wow man, I admire the way you take care of your stuff!

  • Say Luke, a lot of people may of asked this already but I can't help but ask too.

The Super Nintendo in Europe/UK has the exact same design as the Japanese Super Famicom and the cartridges over here are the exact same. Although I understand the whole 50hz/60hz issue so...how could you mod a PAL SNES to play Super Famicom games?

  • great vid. i actually bought a cheap import adapter to play my sfc games. i later purchased a super magicom which also lets you play both carts in either th snes or sfc.

  • "Idk if you can see or not cause there not there anymore"

  • Thank you Luke :) I would still love to have a Super Famicom in the collection, but the first thing I will do once I buy another SNES is to put it on the operating table and castrate the bastard haha :) Thanks brother man. 5/5 and favorited :)

  • If you don't want to take the top off of your console you can weaken the plastic tabs with wire cutters then you can pull them off with plyers.

  • hey were you get tha japanese game?

  • japan...

  • or you could just switch the game cases

  • i found this out along time ago its pretty cool that the japanese games can play on america's consoles

  • Wow, your Super looks clean ... wierd.

  • WHAT?DISKS?HOW?TELL ME, PLEASE!

  • Question: If you had a Game Genie, could you just use that instead of modding your system? I'm not as hard up I'm just wanting to play RoDD instead of SDD

  • just remove the tabs on the slot where you put the cartridge on top of the game genie and the super famicom games will work

  • Groovy.

  • RoDD? SDD? Please, what games are you talking?

  • Sorry. Return of Double Dragon instead of Super Double Dragon. RoDD is better because of tweaks that were made. A user named Acidglow made a video comparing the two.

  • Really? I'd like to see how you did that. I would also like to softmod my SNES and play games off disks.

  • if i ever get sfc game i will do that

  • You're welcome.

    4 stars.

  • why didn't i think of this

sorry about your family they're come back :(

  • you sound like heath ledger as the joker. haha.

  • @ZwienerZ Lol he does

  • is the japanese cartridge the same as a european one?

in other words: can u play without modding japanese games on an european snes?

  • you cant because theres a hardware limitation preventing you on playing 60hz games on 50hz snes.

  • some yes but most have region lock out

  • will this work vice versa? a pal system playing ntsc games? what should i do luke?

  • You need to get it modded so it does 60hz and you need to widen the cartridge slot. It's quite a difficult mod to do unless you're experienced with that kind of stuff. There are guys that you can send your SNES to and they'll mod it for you (can cost rather a lot to do though).

  • I want to mod my NTSC super nintendo so I can play a European PAL version of terranigma. Does anyone know if the UK terranigma cartridge is one of those weird PAL carts that can work in a US snes without doing the mod?

  • UK SNES carts are the same as the japanese ones in this video so u will need to mod ur console to play the game, or get a PAL snes from ebay for $10

  • i own a bunch of JAPANESE SNES games that have those opening tabs...

  • But I have the Japanese version of Street Fighter 2 and my snes has play it with out doing what ya said ....

  • Maybe you bought it second hand and the mod was already done.

  • Comment removed

  • is it possible to just break off the tabs through the opening instead of opening up the whole thing?

  • I'm about to try and do it without taking my snes apart

  • it wasn't bad. i used needle nose pliers to wiggle those pieces off. then i used a ginsu knife to whittle more of the plastic away. it might've been easier with a tri-wing, but i didn't want to wait for one to come in the mail. it looks sloppy in there but it works enough. Assault Suits Valken is fuckin' razz!

  • Why so serious man? Not everybody knows, chill the ef out.

  • the japanese super famicom looks the same as the european SNES

  • @ildsc: they are, except the european machine have a region lockout chip, though its pretty easy to disable.

  • @ildsc well it did have the same design and were called the super famicom in europe and japan

  • @ildsc they are the same

  • @brandonnesfan

ummm no, they are not at all. European is PAL region and Japanese is NTSC, HUGE difference, bub.

  • Will this work for a model 2 snes?

  • Disregard this, just saw the video response.

  • the ones in the Game Genie. you can take the game genie apart with a normal phillips head screwdriver to access the tabs easier :)

  • I did what you said and now I can play my Super Famicom cartriges on my SNES. Thanks a lot man ^-^

  • they have those gamebits here. i haven't got one but i did get the 72 pin connector. previewDOTtinyurlDOTcom/mvn5qn
