  • @PurpleNightButterfly the Declaration is simply a document expressing their independence from the British and holds no legal value in society. The Constitution though, which DOES hold legal value, says this:

    "Congress shall make NO law respecting an establishment of religion"

    also in the Treaty of Tripoli:

    "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion"

  • Very refreshing!!!! Here in Australia our first female prime minister disapproves same sex marriage. As does her climate change minister who happens to be lesbian!!! It's extremely refreshing to see Claire stand up for what she thinks is right regardless of the outcome. I actually think this is something that will benefit her in the long run.   • It is such a shame that Americans only see respect from a standpoint of looking at minority groups wishes. If you want to use the word respect you need to look at the whole context. The majority of people in the US and the world view marriage as a religious sacrament. Most religions forbid homosexuality. If you want it to be an issue of equality and respect in the US then change the legal institution of marriage to civil unions of 2 people and move marriage bk to the churches & satisfy all

    Separation of the two is very important. You fail to understand what that means is that the gov't can't impose a religion on us, not that if the majority of people decide an issue of law based on their own preconceptions (religious or otherwise) that it has nothing to do with the separation clause. In a majority rule system, such as what ours is suppose to be, the majority is suppose to get their way just so long as the minority isn't oppressed. Civil Unions again

  • @shotout74 first, try using the correct form of "you're"--it helps in your goal of "accuracy". second, your second point wasn't something you said in your first point: these are poll numbers. third, your mistake was, originally, to combine your point of view "most people view marriage as a religious sacrament" (no data to support that) with the "fact", a separation of church and state.

  • @shotout74 A bit of syntax might have helped you, but again, you're mixing opinions like "homosexuality is a sin" with your ex post facto 2008 poll figures, which have nothing to do with universal marriage rights--only percentages of our culture polled who consider themselves religious or not--you use this to jump to conclusions that, again, are your opinion.

(great grammar again!) actually, this illustrates that you fail to understand the laws that exist to protect even the smallest minority groups. this isn't a football game or an election (which has its own protection for "minority" states in supplying them with electoral votes that tilt an election in a way that has nothing to do with the amount of votes a particular candidate receives, and how they affect outcome).
