i have allways noticed that sam does this routine when he knows he has the goods instead of his own prowess. he writes speeches for the president and gets to be this tough guy? he would never be that tough in front of someone politiclly "bigger" than him. doing your job is one thing. but being loyal-tough inside the beltway is another. proves that sam (inside) is a wimp. he had the goods on the 2 dopes that screwed with Ainsley and did it right but this?-no
@firestar1075 I don't think he's trying to be tough. He's extremely angry at her betraying Leo's past. He shows sides like this throughout the show. It never had anything to do with if they were lower than him on the hierarchy, an example would be his argument with the military liaisons about gays in the military.
@creamfinger yes i know he's not real, i just thought (as a tv show) a fireing like that was more of a josh thing instead of a sam thing because sam is the DCD not a real player in the adminitration because what she did was a political thing not a message thing, AND i understand that his character is trying to cross the street to the political side
@firestar1075 I notice I didn't get a reply. 1 thing though: Not only is he counted among White House Senior Staff but he is also Senior Advisor to The President, that's pretty high up.
@firestar1075 Hahaha...no, really, you're serious? I mean, you wouldn't be ready to punch the lights out of someone who caused so much pain to a person who was almost a father to you?
It was "Take out the Trash Day", and I personally think Leo was pretty lenient with her later...I mean, yeah, she did it for good reasons, but she put him through hell, made him humiliate himself by publicly apologizing, got Josh subpoenaed four times...I'd be just as pissed as Sam.
Well, that's the grace of a truly wonderful and good person. Leo did suffer, but he showed forgiveness and compassion when he understood her reasons and let her stayed on. That's the mark of a true hero, someone who can forgive even the most grevious wrongs. There's not many people like that in the government these days. Men like Leo are a dime a dozen, if more of them were around the government wouldn't be as screwed up as it is today.
Welcome to today's Washington--where even a decent moderate like Evan Bayh is so disillusioned that he decides to retire (and at a time when his own Party has the White House, the House of Reps and the Senate).
@Ares99999 How were they stupid? She thought the President was letting someone who was possibly an incompetent drunkard run the White House just because they were old friends, and hiding the evidence because they didn't want to be caught — which by the way, is very common in Washington. She was pretty stupid to do what she did, because it was a private file for a reason (he was cured), but her motives for doing it weren't stupid at all.
@grumpytosnowwhite It was stupid because her reasons were invalid. Leo WASN'T a drunkard. And he hadn't touched a drop for years. Her motives were stupid, not too mention COMPLETELY unprofessional.
And her motives, to be honest, are completely irrelevant and beside the point. A wrong, even for the right reasons, is still a wrong. She had no business messing with someone's life like that.
@grumpytosnowwhite Plus, how can her reasons be good when she didn't CHECK her vague misgivings? They can't. End of story. Lets stop trying to see a good side to her stupidity.
@Ares99999 Not really. She kind of showed at the end that she didn't really understand alcoholism, how it's a disease and all, so it was an honest mistake, even if it was a moronic one. It's not a "good" side to her stupidity — just that she thought she was doing a genuinely good thing, not something for personal or political gain.
@grumpytosnowwhite She can't possibly have been doing a genuinely good thing - since when is purposefully working to ruin a man's life 'good', anyway? - because she didn't even know what she was doing.
That she thought she was doing a good thing is meaningless, and only serves to show the depth of her stupidity.
No redeeming value whatsoever. She's trash, period.
@Ares99999 wat u need to see, is the next clip - when shes being led out by security, Leo calls her in and they talk in his office. this clip doesn't show the whole story and u cant judge on something that hasn't been fully told.
@bornbillsmith It bothers me when it seems that Leo's past and NOT his fight to overcome it - which he succeeded in doing - is what counts. And not his present self.
It bothers me when PRIVATE information was given away because of Leo's painful problem. Where does SHE get the right to pass judgement with incomplete information?
She either did this knowingly or did this without knowing the consequences.
Sam is the best character on the West Wing hands down

shes great at playing young roles . . . remember her from ER - the episode when Carter and Lucy were stabbed, she played the schitzo's wife

It's such a change. In Gilmore Girls, she is such a strong person. But here, you see weakness and vulnerability.

You're absolutely right. It's such a shame that people like him are nowhere to be found in Washington, where his integrity is needed the most.

@Jonathon86W I saw the whole episode, and based my opinion on that. I found Sam fair and Leo overly lenient. Fair enough?
Ares99999 6 months ago
@Ares99999
She clearly wasn't trying to destroy Leo.
It does bother me Leo had a history of substance abuse.
It doesn't bother you ?
The party that got it was clearly acting only out of political ambitions and really didn't care about the substance abuse.
But she didn't know that.
How would you feel if is she had given the information to the New York Times like the Pentigon Papers were by Daniel Ellsberg.
I think you would have a change of heart.

Take your pick.
