  • I recall myself being at two places hearing this song:

    1. Mental institution

    2. A beautiful sandy beach somewhere and the horizon escaping me

This is a nice song :)

  • @50Emeraid youare rite this song did come out in the 1930s but lou versions came out in 1973. I bought the 45 in the mid or late 1973.

  • I agree this is Christie's greatest song; I just heard this version a couple days ago and it struck me like a lightning bold; it touches my soul and fills me with sunshine and optimism.

  • This song reveals the enchantment of the 30's,40's and 50's and lets

your imagination drift far over the decades and the great generations that

went before! Bless them all !

  • I need to be on a train, preferably riding east, to wake, have a coffee, and watch the sun climb over the blue horizon. As I live in Georgia, this is a worthy challenge.

  • @MsPandaRosa The first time I ever heard this song was in the movie The Rainman when Tom Cruise was driving in his car.

  • My Father's favorite song! So beautiful, loved to sing it! Thankyou for a beautiful beautiful video : )

  • SOB , this is terrific .

  • temasoooo....!!!!

  • My life has only begun!

  • just the best!!!

  • Reminds me of when I lived in Hawaii. Great times.

  • ONE OF THE BEST VERSIONS OF THIS SONG EVER!

    GREAT SINGER!

    THANKS FOR POSTING!

    DRWLD

  • this is his best, or second best...along with another song on this same album= "You Were the One"...can you post that ?

  • No doubt his best ever. I enjoyed all his songs in the mid 60s in HS, but this is clearly his best. So melancholy, yet hopefull.

  • Really love this upbeat music..heard it yesterday in a made for tv movie..caught my attention & I've been playing it ever since...Once saw TV show with Leslie Gore and Lou and they tore the place up..Good memories here!!!

  • amazing song

  • Yeah. I agree it was his best, even though the song as a whole sounds like an out-take, the song is just great. For a long time ('74-'88), I thought maybe I was the only one who had a copy. It had a re-birth when Rain Man came out. It's been on my favorites list since 1974

  • Just one hell of a talent. Still kick sounds great today.

  • @TheRosaLee23 He recorded it intentionally that way with the fade in and out.........

  • Love this song. gives you hope!!!!!

  • This is one FINE version of this song. "Beyond the Blue Horizon" had been around since 1930 and Lou Christie picked up on it in early 1974. I don't know what led him to it, but he knocks it out of the park -- thanks for all your great hits, Lou!

  • I never tire of listening to this song ... over and over and over again!!!

  • Good song. Simple lyrics but not too trite, and terribly inspiring! And of course, there's the stellar vocals and steel guitar. This is one of those little gems that gets forgotten about sometimes but when you pull it out of your pocket it still has all the lustre

  • When I first heard Christies Version I really thought it was the same steel player as

Michael Nesmith - Beyond The Blue Horizon

  • 9 dislikes? who are these people? yikes...

  • This song was also beautifully played at the very beginning and the very end of a Lifetime movie titled "When Husbands Cheat." It's a chick flick - best part is this song!!

  • My all time favourite song!!!

  • "SON OF AAAAA BIIIIIIITCH!!!!!" Charlie Babitt

  • Wasn't this in a movie? I remember hearing it on the radio many times in the early 70s, but I seem to also remember it in a film made much later... (But perhaps it was the group 'Blue Rodeo' who had a similar sound...)

  • @shmuli9 It was in Monte Carlo, sung by Jeanette McDonald in 1929 (i think). But this version was featured in RainMan and got some airplay then. We played this at our wedding as my husband and I left the church.

  • @BowedOak1 Yes! That's it! It was "Rain Man". I've heard Jeannette McDonald sing a few other songs in films (one time with Douglas Fairbanks!)

  • @shmuli9 It was also in a movie called "Dutch" in the early '90s with Ed O'Neil.

  • Lou Christie deserves a standing ovation. Brilliant.

  • this sounds like something out of sponge bob!

  • Always one of my favorites and I like this version by Lou Christie the best of all. Thanks

  • "SON OF A BITCH! (SON OF A BITCH!)"

  • my brother asked for this song to be played at his funeral,,,,,and i agree

  • You ever scratch your back with the corner of a wall

  • Thank you danjaxon1... This is, by far, my favorite performance by Lou Christy. I feel so lucky to have run across it while surfing youtube. You made by day!

  • Dig it!

  • This being a 1930 song, I've always wondered what behooved Lou Christie to pick up on it...this is a *beautiful* arrangement a great tune...

  • I can't watch this without singing and swaying side to side.

  • @hjb103055 Then you might be dead! Watch out for the worms, they crawl everywhere.

  • I love this version of Blue Horizon - and it is suitably complimented by the beautiful pictures.

It alwlays makes me want to get up and do the quick-step.

  • Love this - can't be beat!

  • I love this !..thanks so much for this upload!

  • brilliant , now this is music . you can't beat the oldies .

  • Man I like this song. I think its because besides having great melody and great execution, its speaks to man's yearning for a better tomorrow - in this world and the promise of eternal peace in the next .. God is good and this song, whether it was meant to or not reminds me of that every time I hear it.

  • @CanadaLovesUSA

That's what it says to me too -- it is impossible to remain in a somber mood while listening -- long live this song!

  • I wish I could hear it.

  • @SouthernBelleSmiles Turn up the volume.

  • “We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction that there is a better life, a better world, beyond the horizon.”

  • @zoerie

Yeah, you are right. I have been on the other side of the world in various contries, including our (U.S.) islands of Hawaii, and I would like to tell you that the United States is the best place in the world to be or be from. what you are talking about is what is referred to as Eutopia. does NOT exist in real life, but some people think that where they are sis Eutopia for them. That is the Perfect World for them.

  • “We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction that there is a better life, a better world, beyond the horizon.”

  • Lou Christie 1974, Mike Nesmith 1970

  • This man can sing! What a shame he was limited to all those falsetto songs in the 60s. He could sing any song and make it sound good. Thanks for posting this one.

  • @PattiNBobby he sure can! seen him perform live and he's just awesome!!!!

  • Whenever I see a word like "undoubtedly" I wonder, so who died and made you king? This is a great tune. I'm sure there are those who would agree that it was Lou's best. I'm also sure there are an equal number of folks like me who believe this song is more about the score than it is about the singer. Almost any good vocalist could do it and make it sound good. On the other hand, "Lightning Strikes", "Two Faces Have I", etc. are all songs that only Lou Christie's distinctive voice could do.

  • NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you sick? Lightning Strikes is Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco absolute best ever.

  • que tema..!!! gracias, dan! de la pelicula rain man.

  • I'm 70 years old and grew up when Lou was putting out his songs, and I have to say I hated them! I never heard him sing this song and find it wonderful in every way and so like the second time he sings the words. After all these years I'm a Lou Christie fan!

  • Lou, you knocked my socks off with your version of Beyond The Blue Horizon. I've enjoyed you going back to Two Faces Have I and The Gypsy Cried, but you out did yourself on this song. Thanks.

  • Tom Cruise\Charlie Babbit angry and pissed off driving through the desert. Does it work so well with this song because the song conveys a sense of melancholy yearning that Cruise's character is too pissed off to even feel?

  • Seau2007 & LeslieSteeg, So sorry for your loss, My heart goes out to you both. I, too, have lost both parents as well as three brothers. I am the last to see the Blue Horizon.

  • @BargainHunter8142 Thank you for your kind words....

  • Lou Christie is underappreciated.

    There, I said it.

  • seau2007 Sorry to hear about your dad....

  • THe orginal from long ago is quite good. But, Lou really captures something else in this song. Stand on the beach on the N. Shore of Oahu in Haleiwa and you will feel the message that this song is giving.

  • Love the video as much as the song. Beautiful job!!!!! Really makes the song more beautiful!!!

  • Reminds me of better days when i lived in Hawaii.

  • I never knew this was so popular. I just remember going to work one morning a long, long time ago and feeling very depressed. Driving into a sunrise and being blinded. This song came on the radio and I felt instantly blessed with a new day. I never liked the songs he sang (Lightning Strikes Again is on my no-no list) but I will always love Lou Christie for my moment of clarity.

  • @melodyfender This song is a message and a life style. Aloha

  • I feel like I just took a mini vacation! Great job with the photo's. That being said, I have to say I like Lou Christie's version better then Mike Nesmith's. They are very similar, although Mike's intro is much longer, and somehow he seems to make the music a little *country* like.

Thanks danjaxon1, I really enjoyed it!

  • @ShadyLadyDi

LOL. I often take a "staycation" while at work using this video, its a wonderful escape!! This is the best version I've heard.

  • Good song by a talented artist...Thanks Lou Chrisie for making my day brighter!

  • I never saw Rainman, but I've always loved this song---especially the Lou Christie version. He's captured the deeply bittersweet of this song like no one else.

  • @MingnonDunn THe orginal from long ago is quite good. But, Lou really captures something else in this song. Stand on the beach on the N. Shore of Oahu in Haleiwa and you will feel the message that this song is giving.

  • @seau2007 I visited Oahu in the 1992: I know EXACTLY what you mean! BTW, I think the original of this was sung by Jeanette McDonald in one of her musical films.

  • @MingnonDunn Yes, I am a Jeannette fan and she did sing this....but certainly not with this style or tempo! :-) Lou is ok but I really prefer Mike Nesmith...the whole performance, the background sounds, etc

  • @seau2007

I have never been to Haleiwa, but I have been to Hawaii. and I liked to watch the sunset on Waikiki Beach. Just BEAUTIFUL!

  • Dedicated to Jean 4/21/01

  • As dearly as I love this performance, I was surprised, on re-discovering Mike Nesmith's version, that Lou Christie's vocal arrangement was basically almost an exact copy of Nesmith's version which came three or four years ahead of Lou Christie's. That said, I prefer Lou Christie's version...a rare instance of a cover version exceeding the original..a sublime performance from Lou.

  • @Delfan1961 I agree - but I think Nesmith's was more meandering in the first verse - his whole starting wistfully and becoming more rousing was more pronounced, I think. Having said that, I prefer Reed's too. Such a wonderful song :)

  • @Delfan1961 Ooops - I meant Christie!

  • I love this song, giving peace of mind...

  • This record is untouchable. The most creative recording I've ever heard. OMG ,its like a moment you only have once in your life. A life changer

  • reminds me of Rain Man, the great movie!

  • Reminds me of better days when I lived in Hawaii.

  • The best!!

  • this song i heard from that movie dutch

  • that is where i heard it first too

  • listen to Michael Nesmiths version on here.

  • Lou Christie didn't have a hit with this tune but should have. Another tune he should have had a hit with was his medley with Lesley Gore of SINCE I DON'T HAVE YOU and IT'S ONLY MAKE BELIEVE. Both underrated artists.

  • Not mega, but Horizon was a hit. #12 in Billboard 1974.

  • Always think of tom cruise screaming "son of a bitch" and it echoing and fading into this great song, Rainman top class movie

  • i think Rainman had a killer soundtrack.

  • Don't Forget this song wan also in the movie Dutch With Ed O'Neil

  • @unspeakable28 lmao!!! I think of that scene too and i would have yelled something a lot stronger than S.O.B had i been saddled with the problems Cruise had in that movie. Hoffman deserved the Oscar for that role and rightfully so , he was brilliant.

  • @unspeakable28 Haha that sounds funny. I don't remember that part even though I've watched that movie several times. I always remembered this song from the movie "Dutch" with Ed O'Neil.

  • Thanks for posting this, I haven't heard it for years, it's the BEST version of this song EVER recorded. I don't know if it was a Hit for Lou Christie (was it?) but it should have been. I know he had hits like THE GYPSY CRIED and LIGHTNING STRIKES but he was somewhat underated as a Recording Artist.

  • This is the second best song on this LP..the best is one called 'You Were the One"..could you post that ? I think Tony Romeo wrote it.

  • I so much wanted this song to play at my husbands funeral, but wasn't able to find it anywhere. I decided to type it in today and found it and was able to play it. A song I've heard played on the radio just before my Mother and Brother passed away. Very heart warming. Are we able to purchase it today and if so where.

  • it's on the " rainman" soundtrack if you can find it

  • @froggyjump2 I know this is a year later than when you posted your comment on this post but you can purchase this song on Amazon.com if you haven't already purchased it.

  • Reminds me of better days when I lived in Hawaii.

  • everybody and their mother tried to get me to sell my 1962 tri-carb healey but i still have it. It sits in my garage , a rust bucket, but am going to restore it. While looking for parts in 1985 I found a restored 1961 mk1 that a guy had restored (level 2) but had not done the engine or tranny. I was able to convince the wife that I should but it. She agreed and I got it for 5grand. I am putting a detuned racing engine in it this year so I'll have to see how Lou sounds @ 150 on the turnpike.LOL

  • Thanks for this song. One of my all-time favorites. Brings back memories.

  • i first head this song cruising down the highway one night in my austin healey 3000. With the exhaust sound of the Healey and the rush of the night air made for a moment I'll never foret.

  • Nothing like this song in a Healey. Had a '63 3000 in 1966. Had it for 3 years and mom made me sell it. Miss that car. Steve

  • great song love lou christie was simply totally different never heard a voice like his falls in the same catagory as gene pitney

both unique in there own way.cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is an evergreen. !!!

  • Heard this on the NBC Overnight clip. Great song, thanks. And so it goes.

  • danjaxon1:Thnx so much for ur video which melds so well w/ Christie's version!

In addition to remembering this song when very young - loved to hear it again while watching "Rain Man" . And, now w/ ur video that allows me to replay over & over!

  • Just went over to hear Macdonalds version (1930) of this song and I like Lous' the best. I really like the way he starts off low and soft and gets louder and

    as the song progresses.

  • Reminds me of better times, when I was in Hawaii. MANY THANKS!

  • Thanks for posting this . . . it did bring back some nice memories. In listening to the song again, the increasing volume/intensity in the song is like the rising and setting of the sun.

  • Some place here is a request for more volume. I went to the Rhapsody web site, found Christie's album this is on and the way this song is hear here is the way it was recorded, he starts out low in voice and later increases it. He does it again toward the end -- he lowers his voice and then later increases the volume. I have to wonder why he did it that way, very unusual.

  • I remember hearing this over the years, I didn't realize Jeanette MacDonald sang it, kind of an unusual song for her to sing. As far as Christie's version being a poor man's version of the song. Seems it fits in right now with the way our economy is going and people loosing their jobs. I think Christie's version is an inspiration myself. Thanks for this upload, it definitely goes into my favorites.

  • I remember this song playing on the radio when I was doing lab research as a graduate student in the 1970s. I would work all night, sometimes the only person in the building. Loved it when this song came over the radio--made it seem less lonely. Thanks for posting!

  • Thank You!! : )

  • This song was first heard in the 1930 film, "Monte Carlo," sung by the late Jeanette MacDonald. She then released in on RCA in September of that year. Film newcomer, Jeanette, starred with Maurice Chevalier in the film and I understand that he was known as a Hollywood "butt-pincher"! Wonderful remake of the classic song here by Lou Christie...

  • I didn't know Mike Nesmith did a similar version of this prior to Lou Christie's hit version. So I finally heard Nesmith's version. True, the arrangements are extremely similar, but in my opinion, Lou Christie's vocals are much better. I can totally understand why his version was the hit version. No offense to Mike Nesmith of course.

  • Just Beautiful!!! 5*s Thanks freedomrider...Anita

  • Glad to hear it. Beautiful! and Mike Nesmith did do this song as well....i didnt know that. I guess be good also ....love the scenery in this one.

  • This is so great to hear again & the video is well put together...glad that the volume gets better. This is the 3rd time i heard...i think it is up there with Lou,s best songs, 5 stars.

  • a real lost -45-. from way back when. dude lets have some volume

  • Thank you Peteboy 1113...I agree...let's have some volume!!!! We should not have to work so hard to hear it!!!!

  • i also remember this song from the 1991move, DUTCH staring ED O'NEILL from Married with Children. They played it toward the end of the movie when they were travelling back home. I love LOU CHRISTIE.

  • Hearing this always reminds me of the scene it plays in on Rain Man. "SON OF A BIIIIIIITCH!"

  • This is my funeral song.

  • you are the only one I've seen to post this comment. It immediately came to my mind to play this at my funeral, when I first heard it. Guess we've got the same destination in mind

  • My thoughts exactly. I tried to find the CD to play at my husbands funeral 2 years ago this last Monday, but couldn't find it.

  • I went to the Nesmith version, and give him props for doing it originally. While I don't think this was a "hit" verson anymore than the Nesmith, I do have to say Christie's version is VERY strong. But Nesmith did it first, and is a classic musician in his own right.

  • I can't remember when in my nearly 40 years of brodcasting I took this song home when my radio station didn't want it. I still remember it was on a Blue and Yellow labelled record. The way, he fades into the song, and has that powerhouse ending is GENIUS.. I am SHOCKED it's posted on YouTube (I didn't know anyone would know it)...I hadn't been able to hear it since I sold my singles collection years ago! Terrific song--great vocal! Thanks for posting PS Was it a hit ANYWHERE in the world?

  • Sorry about misspelling "broad"...very unlike me. :)

  • The arrangement is all nesmith. He's the genius, Christie's version is a poor man's version of this song. If you really love this version, nesmith's will make you cry like a baby!

  • This is a great song! Thanks for posting.

  • Another example of a mediochre remake of somebody else's work... see the Michael Nesmith version for something worthwhile

  • Magnificent

  • Nice. Thanks, "Rain Man" for introducing this song to me..

  • danjaxon1: Enuf of the controversy over when/what film this song by Chrisie was credited!

In the end - all I need is ur beautiful & peaceful video of those amazing sunsets along w/ Lou Christie's unequalled version of "Beyond The Blue Horizon" to give me peace @ the end of a trying day!

    I can't thank U enough!

  • The song in "When Husbands Cheat" is "My Eyes Adored You" by Frankie Valli.

  • jeezypete: Yep, Frankie Valli's "My Eyes Adored You" was also used in "When Husbands Cheat" - but it was Christie's

"Beyond The Blue Horizon" that closed this great TV movie.

  • It was introduced by Jeanette McDonald in the 1930 movie "Monte Carlo." It has been recorded by many artists but no one did it better than Lou Christie.

  • Good catch on the original record date. copyright 1929. What you want to do is listen to Mike Nesmiths' "Magnetic South" album 1970 release, then listen to Lou Christies' 1974 release of the same song.

They are the same - except for Nesmith started out his version with a farmer waking up then hear the tractor start then into the song. Mikes' band did the song (Steel, piano, guitar, drums) you would swear all Lou did was add his voice to the same soundtrack. Well worth the listen.

  • I cannot help but cry when I hear this song as it was one of my mom's favorites. My mom recently passed.

  • @LeslieSteeg Sorry about your mom. My dad passed two years ago on June 1st. I think of him too when listening to this. Aloha

  • @LeslieSteeg Damn Leslie, Im so sorry to hear that! I could totally see how this would have such an effect on you, as it is not meant to be a sad song, but still has a tinge of sadness to it. Very emotional.

  • @Tremo1911 To me this song is very emotional. My mom's last days were spent in the hospital on morphine (she was terminal) and we played this song for her many times as it was her favorite and she loved it!

  • @Tremo1911 If you check out my "favorites", you'll see a video my brother made with this song about my mom

  • anyone know who sang this song in the TV movie " When Husbands Cheat." ? Thanks

  • Anyone know who sang this song at the end of the movie " When Husbands Cheat " ? This rendition is great but so is the one in the movie. Thanks

  • writerandi: I've tried searching for credits for "When Husbands Cheat" & can't find music creds. But it *was* Christie's recording used in "Rain Man" - & with that bkgrd & guitar & Christie's rather unique voice - gotta believe it's the same used in the tv movie "WHC"! Hope this helps.

  • I think they played this song in the movie Rain Man with Tom Cruse and Dustin Hoffman whilst driving to Las Vegas.

    ~

  • BluesGal17: You're SO right! It was one of my faves - bringing back so many memories.

  • das lied ist klasse!!! war auch in dem film RAIN MAN !!! errinert mich so an die zeit in meiner ausildung!!!

  • Great song! I remember it being used in a airline or travel commercial of some sort back in the 70's.

  • Of the four magnificent falsetto singers of the '60s (Frankie Valli [Four Seasons], Dick St. John (Dick & Dee Dee], Lou Christie, and Eddie Kendricks [Temptations]), only Christie was able to soar seamlessly from full voice right into falsetto, and this number demonstrates that beautifully. What a song! What a voice!

  • what a brilliant tune my granny Shaw in Scotland loved this song!RIP gran beyond the blue horizon.

  • who sang this song in 'my own private idaho'
