  • Yeah the two problems I have with SotN is you don't really get to explore outside the castle and it's not difficult enough; I really wish they'd make you pull out all the stops. But hey you can always challenge yourself. I've done wizard, just sub-weapons, naked alucard challenge (also done this with all the cursed swords; Red Rust, Namakura, and Tyrfing). Eventually I'll get around to buying an adapter, so I can record myself going for a dance pad challenge :)

  • Thumps up if you have a save file for Symphony of the Night named "ANALBAG".

  • I can't believe the word "Gameception" is nowhere to be found in the two top comments.

  • @celza6198 whats gameception

  • @274joe It's a lil play on the word inception from the movie titled Inception (about a dream within a dream etc). Watch Southpark Insheeption and maybe the movie itself both pretty entertaining imo.

  • @jbetenbender i knew what inception was but not gameception and ty i rlly does help :)

  • Sweet

  • You can actually skip the game over screen by pressing start+select at the same time... maybe that helps making things less annoying

  • I was about to make the "gameception" joke. Then, I Ctrl+F'd the comments for previous iterations, hit myself for lack of originality, and promised not do do it ever again.

  • @rasengan46 I did the same thing, except I cried.

  • 4:36 Life=Made

  • Analbag, that's me.

  • I got Castlevania The Dracula X chronicles for the psp, and it has Sypmphony of the night (if you unlock it) the game over is not that bad because you can skip the game over screen. And the voice acting is different.

  • "What is a man?" "A miserable little pile of secrets." "But enough talk...have at you!" I love that quote so much! <3

  • i almost cried at the end remembering all those things in my youth

  • One of my favorite Castlevania games is Circle of the Moon. It's disappointing he didn't at least go into the GBA games. I'd like to hear his opinions on CotM and the other two GBA titles.

  • A game within a game? IT'S GAMECEPTION!!!!!!

  • symphony of the knight, the story doesn't sound too bad. i always liked games where you begin as the most powerful person ever but get your power taken away, and have to get it all back. i don't know why, but those kinds of games are really fun for me

  • fred told me not to press the skip button but i did

  • @Gabe1997100 same here

  • First 35 seconds - best opening of any AVGN video, ever.

  • Cartridges always had sun an advantage over cd games when I came to speed. No loading at all.

  • @samdiego Oh for goodness sakes, you call that english?

"Cartridges have some advantages over CD games when it comes to speed."

How hard is it to type that up honestly? Are you stupid or something?

  • The ending was so beautiful. *Tear*

  • Thumbs up if the ending made you feel proud to be an AVGN fan.

  • my favorite of the series is curse of darkness.. still the whole games have they own style, and yup...the manga style on ds games sucks

  • The intro music is Kick Ass

  • I could never understand SoTN... How the hell is Shaft alive and well a few years later after you've killed him in Akumajo Dracula X with Richter, and you've even killed his ghost in the same game? And they've got Alucard from a tall man with short dark hair in Castlevania 3, to a teenager with long white hair...And all those infinite bugs in the game...

  • the advertisement was for The Woman in Black, a horror movie, and the castlevania games are a horror series. strange coincidence.

  • @christiansoldier11 That is the scaryest movie ive ever seen you should so watch it

  • That green skeleton (Nova Skeleton) that shoots lasers out of it's dick is really a pain in the ass... It's not that hard to kill but if you're not too well equipped or too high leveled and you get a direct hit from that laser, you get 3 digits worth of damage... Oh well.... Here's to frustration... *gets Alucard Shield + Shield rod and starts beating the shit out of all the monsters*

  • Symphony of the Night is truly spectacular... Not only because of the new approach of the game like using hit points instead of health bars and being inside the whole castle instead of the classic linear gameplay... But it also has a nostalgic feel into it... Even some enemies were "recycled", so to speak... The music gave it's share of awesomeness, including a very beautiful Theme Song, "I am the Wind"... Overall, I give 5 out of 5 stars to Symphony of the Night...

  • 6:44 INCEPTION GAME!!!

  • i tink horrmony of desper is the best for me

  • Lament of Innocence was the best modern Castlevania for the ps2

  • I really love Castlevania Curse of Darkness for Ps2 , but symphony of the night its fucking awesome.

  • Symohony of the Night = Skyrimvania

  • Game within a Game? Gameception!!!

  • Analbag yea thats me

  • @DeathNoteOps Totally lol.

  • Funny

  • I was ranked in the top 100 for SOTN (gamertag Clutch MC)

  • that must have been the Jap version of SOTN it seemed a little different

  • Thanks to the AVGN I was introduced to Castlevania. I do like the games aspecially classics.

I wouldn't say I am a fan of the serious but I enjoyed them even though it isn't my taste of games. Howeer, I really love the soundtracks of all Castlevanias. Respects to Konami, they do really great soundtracks overall.

  • No, thank you for posting this. Castlevania has a place in my treasure trove of memories. I agree with most, SotN was definitely the best game in the series (if not all time.) The music alone was a collection of masterpeices. The game play was hypnotic and the myriad of different items and easter eggs kept me entertained for years. What more can you ask for in a game? Really?

  • i prefer metroidvania games more than the retro ones

  • And now I'm about to play Symphony of the Night for the first time ever. All because of you Nerd.

  • is the voice of richter in SOTN the same guy who did chris' voice in resident evil deirectors cut? he's painfully bad...

  • 6:46 YO dang! Iheard you like games

  • The map looks like the ssbb map

  • Analbag, that's me.

  • It seems James has never played Curse of Darkness.

  • 3:24 Destroy......BUSTER!!!

  • The ending gets me every time :'(

  • omg i have symphone of the knight it was fucking awesome and i sold it for $3500 but i bought it again for $50

  • @micvahkruegere Kinda like how James got a 32X for 2.50 (USD) at a flea market yet it sells for about 120$ on Ebay? You could make your living on that shit!

  • @micvahkruegere fkn epic lol

  • 3500? Jeesh, you scammed the fuck out of some unlucky sap XD Got my copy for 25 bucks a few months ago

  • castlevania was an epic game for the first 4 the new one suck 1 2 3 4 are th only good ones yep simons quest is a good game to me the new ones suck tiger balls

  • SOTN was the last one in my heart.... all the rest are just to storylinic. SOTN had the perfect amount of action, and story.

  • Dawn of sorrow is simply epic !!!!!! Using the powers of all the monsters in da game . Awesome weapons and cool gameplay !

  • Let say SOTN was the 1st Castlevania you ever played and you loved it. Then your friends introduced you to castlevania 1 , what would your reactions be on cv1.? Wow?

  • My only gripe with SotN is it is waaaay too easy. I died maybe three times on my first playthrough, and I'm not very good.

  • He got DoS and AoS mixed up, but I'll let it slide. :)

  • SOTN made me bought my own playstation. I really love that game and i still have the cd but unfortunately it was damaged by a flood even the the playstation was destroyed. Now i bought a PS3 and i downloaded SOTN on PSN.

  • Eric Lecarde

    E.Lecarde

    Alucard

    Could it be?

  • @Dajsciocco4 No, theres no connection.

  • @Dajsciocco4 Alucard made the spear (in the Japanese version of SotN), but Eric is a different guy. Alucard, when he needs to fake being human, uses the pseudonym Genya Arikado.

  • @Plingio Actually as soon as I posted my comment I realized the spear has an even more similar name to Alucard than the character himself. You can't deny, though, that Eric has a pretty similar name too... Thanks for the answer :)

  • Could you review Judgment for the Wii after you review GC games?

  • @SKYLARKo80 You are an idiot. He does not review modern games as his MO.

  • @MechanicalInternet Fuck you back to hell!

  • @SKYLARKo80 Just shows how much you know.

  • I want my childhood back so fucking badly right now... :(

  • anybody that has anything negative to say about SOTN is an idiot. Fuck off James

  • @feyd8194

    Fanboy alert.

  • Comment removed

  • @feyd8194 U mad?

  • 8:58 Cloud is a sniper

  • The area in Symphony where you first confront death at the beginning of Alucards journey is by far the coolest room in all of the games. Not only is it the true beginning of the game, but the crazy whirlpool and the people in the back who were impaled and raised up just like Vlad "Dracul" The Imapler used to do

  • Wait... skeletons with penis lasers... ITS DESTROYMAN !!!

  • what about castlevania rebirth?

  • for some reason, i think the voice acting is either good or bad.

  • I dunno if james was notified but it was Aria of sorrow not Dawn of sorrow lol

  • @spike007980

    Not sure if trolling...

  • John Morris is a member of the Belmont family.

  • god i love symphony of the night, bad ass on the psp

  • it seems like james and cinemassacre in general really have a huge connection to these games. the campiness of old B horror films seem to be a huge driving influence in cinemassacre and James's films, and the original castlevanias draw a ton from that campiness. for me it's always interesting when I realize what games impacted me as a kid and shaped my interests and ideals as an adult, and i love that in these videos, AVGN seems to come to the same realizations. hands down, my favorite AVGN

  • Two words: BUBSY 3D on the playstation!

  • @FitzieZX Thats 5 words

  • Almost shed a tear

  • I was kinda doubting lords of shadow, but it was actually pretty good

  • yo nerd i heard u like games so i put a cover of a game in the cover of the game

  • The new Castlevania games are to Japanese-ish for me, with the crazy flamboyant character designs and ridiculous story line and amounts text. I liked it when it was a dude in medieval Europe going to beat the shit out of dead things.

  • @FrogWalrus to be fair Konami Are Japanese and they did start off out of their comfort zone in terms of culture.but yeah i think SOTN was the first real Japanese styled one...

    it;s the visuals mostly.

the soft eyes, the pale faces the flowing hair etc.

  • @FrogWalrus Well they were also made by japs, so calling them japanese-ish makes little sense, but i do get what you mean :p, atleast they keep making em mostly on 2D unlike the poor beaten horse Sonic

  • @FrogWalrus Yep. They Character design goes way outta control. The newer ones feels like ima Tranny beating the shit out of monsters. Why do Guys have to look like Girls...? And Story line, geez. Why can't we just simple have it like back then. Dracula resurrected! Lets kill him!

  • @UncleSchwarz U mad bro?

  • @HARDCOREBuLL117Onix read the comments before using that fkn retarded ''umadbro'' bitchass punchline the guy didn't whine at all he's sharing a constructive critic

  • @BaalsJurisdiction U have crabz in ur vagina bro?

  • @HARDCOREBuLL117Onix Nobodyismadbro-goback2yourhardcorebullshit/cuturveinsandcrysomemorebro

  • @BaalsJurisdiction U broke your spaec kei brah?

  • @FrogWalrus its not in the mid evil times its in the Victorian era 1830's and 40's

  • James can make me feel fucking emosinal over a game.

  • @noahdanielg emosinal? is that even a word?

  • @animebryan Sorry, sorry for the wrong spelling.:-)

  • i have symphany of the night on xbox live but i cant find anywhere to spend the money they're giving me way more than hearts, anyone know where the hell the shop or what ever is?

  • @GhostWolf130 go to the librarian.

  • ''Analbag'' Rotfl...

  • The problem with Castlevania 4 is that the increased control de-fanged the game. It's a breeze, especially compared to other classic Castlevanias, like one, three and Dracula X. It's not bad, it's just not challenging. They made something instantly gratifying instead of challenging. If they had actually designed the levels to complement the controls, like the original did, it would have been a lot harder, and a lot more memorable.

  • @ZPM7 so im guessing this assessment draws from what egoraptor said about Castlevania 4 in his newest Sequelitis video? i love both egoraptor and the AVGN but i have to side with James. The old games had very choppy and slow controls even Dracula X feels slow in comparison to SC4. The controls in SC4 provide a fair genuine challenge. There are parts of that game that drive me up the fuckin wall. people who say SC4 isnt challenging are dead wrong. its just not AS challenging as the old ones

  • @Silverone43 I can blow through Castlevania 4 in one sitting. Castlevania and Dracula's Curse can still kick my ass. Different people are challenged differently by different games. As you said, it's not nearly as challenging, which to me, until I played Castlevania 4, I considered a hallmark of the series: ball crushing difficulty. No, I did not arrive at this conclusion due to Egoraptor, I was underwhelmed by 4 the first time I played it. It simply isn't as engaging.

  • @Silverone43 Also, I was pretty disappointed by the music. While the music in the earlier titles were inspired by gothic music and music from the early horror films the games drew on for inspiration, 4's music was just.. SNESy, if you know what I mean. Like it was composed to show off the audio capabilities of the SNES, rather than to complement the game. I'm not saying I don't like the game, or that it isn't fun, it just isn't Nintendo hard. It's light and airy, and ultimately not as memorable.

  • @ZPM7 tbh i'd rather have good controls than monstrous difficulty...

it's kind of hard to find that balance

when the player is so well equipped and powerful difficulty tends to get erased...

that's why Aladdin on the Sega Genesis is probably one of my favourite 16 bit games.

the control is great but it'll still kick your ass 6 ways to sunday

    you want a challenge?

beat Aladdin's "Escape" level without losing a life

  • When I was a kid I played the original NES Castlevania so much, I new where every secret treasure was located. I could do tricks that I bet few people have heard of. But I agree that super Castlevania IV is the best.

  • Symphony of the night is the sequel of Castlevania Rondo of Blood on the Turbo Graphics system. not 4. although 4 and Rondo were very similar at the end...

  • AVGN, your ok and all.

But your fans are getting dumber, no offense :/

  • Gameception

  • Symphony of the Night: What made my childhood matter.

  • I love the end, thank you James. =)

  • a game within a game; inception

  • I really liked that "New" Rondo of Blood for the PSP. The one in 3D I found to be addicting and having alot of replay value

  • Symphony of the Night is incredibly overrated.

  • Analbag, that's me.

  • Wait...then Dracula has sex? Who was his wife? If not,did he like poison or like umm do something to a special guy then turned him into a vampire, then call him Alacard? Ughh,so confusing.

  • @enes1324 Actually before the events of Castlevania III, Dracula fell in love with a woman name Lisa and she bore him a son named Adrian (who changes his name to Alucard). Afterwards, Lisa was accused of a being a witch and burned alive, while her son watched in horror. Dracula heard about it and wanted vengeance upon humanity for taking the love of his life.

  • @heerotheman Aaaaah,thnx.

  • This games and the story made my country popular, still,YOU CAN'T BUY VIDEOGAMES HERE!!I NEED TO GO TO FRIKIN' SPAIN!!!!

  • what's wrong with Simon on the first Castlevania, he walks like he has shit in his pants...

  • @ Celacool

and sexier than edward cullen -.-

  • According to Wikipedia Quincy Morris was a part of the Belmont-clan.

  • WOW!

He died in Slogra and Gaibon and just warped to the reverse castle.

    NOW THAT'S BADASS.

  • The top 3 castlevania games has to be in my opinion 1. Lords of Shadow 2.Symphony of the night 3.Jugement

  • Also, i came here because of the people saying that Super Castlevania IV is the best of the serie (perhaps because of nostalgia). Come on, the "metroidvania" style is much better.

  • @felipedp1000

I thought SotN was much better than Super Castlevania IV. SotN had transformations, magic, different weapons, open-ended gameplay, and a lot of other stuff that made it more interesting. In the fourth game all you really have are some cool whip moves and a really tight control scheme.

  • @RSCNyx Tell me only a moment (if your comment was for "shitty music", so, sorry about that,

but in my opinion he has bad music in some stages) that i disrespected Castlevania IV or classic Casltevania games. I really like IV, I know he did his

best for the year it was released (1991), i just think the others are better (even bloodlines, he is from 1994, they had more technologies, its not crazy to think he its better than IV, right?).

  • what about for the xbox360

  • Comment removed

  • is it weird that i almost cried at the end?

  • @AttackTofu Hell no!!! Let it all go man...This is CASTLEVANIA he's "honoring"!! :D

  • @AttackTofu no :)

  • @AttackTofu nope. it's the music and the speech, man.

  • @AttackTofu no we all feel the same way

  • @AttackTofu

I cried. I miss my childhood playing these games.

  • @AttackTofu *snif* no...

  • wow. i was really touched when at the end of the video it said you played the greatest role in this video. i watched the whole ending only in respect and love for the castlevania franchise. Thank You James.

  • Man.... Simon Belmont had the biggest balls out of the whole Belmont family. He was the only one who went straight to Dracula's castle BY HIMSELF. With absolutely NO HELP, no advice from anyone who was either in or outside of the castle. Nothing to help him get stronger other than his own whip(with small upgrades), and minor weapons. FFFFFAWK!! :D

  • 6:43 A game within a game... GAMECEPTION!

  • @EpicFknBrutality

Gameception. That gives me a great idea. You know how some games have minigames? You know, those hidden games or bonus rounds within the main game? Well, what if someone made a mini-minigame? It would be like a minigame within a minigame. Wouldn't that be awesome?

  • Use the fists, not the Red Rust. And MASH the backdash button.

  • The new downloadable castlevania is like symphony of the night, but with online play

  • i guess even the angry video game nerd didn't know that you can manipulate the "now loading" words while you wait. it's pretty fun!

  • You got it wrong,Aria of Sorrow is the one with the secret castle in Japan,Dawn of Sorrow is in some sort of church in a small town.

  • Symphony of the Night is really easy. Cheapest way to play through the game is just shield rod EVERYTHING.

  • @re8517 want ever cheaper way? Get Crissaegrim (Valmanaway in Japan) it literally brakes the game.

  • Love it when he played the clip that had the "Have at you" line. Cause that ended up being recycled in a later game as one of my favorite Liquid Snake quotes - "Have at you Snake!"

  • @EMaster2006 have at you was a common phrase when the games are set

  • @MrKoiking1 Never knew that, to this day I always think of it as a Liquid Snake quote, cause that was the first time I heard such a line from Metal Gear Solid. Though not sure if it was said in any other games besides this Castlevania game.

  • @EMaster2006 basicly its the old way of saying COME ON THEN IF YOU THINK YOUR HARD ENOUGH!

  • @MrKoiking1 Now I'll be able to immidately say the origin of that quote when ever I hear it from now on.

  • @EMaster2006 CHALLENGE COMPLETE

  • 6:08

Try Order of Eccelsia. Awesome game.

  • @Sonic21541

I was just about to comment along the same lines. Order of Eccelsia is an excellent game that looks and plays beautifully.

  • WHAT IS A MAN!!!!

  • So its bad having skeletons with bike on CV64 but nazi skeletons on a industrial factory in bloodlines is ok?
