Simply incredible. I never thought that I would see such an accurate emulation of Nick Drake. I remember reading an article in Q magazine years ago about a Tribute to Nick Drake concert that, although touching, ultimately failed because no singers or bands involved could quite capture the delicate essence of Drake's sound. But you have nailed it with all of these wonderful videos. I'm most impressed.
C'mon guys. Putting this much effort into creating a masterful cover is an achievement. Most musicians begin their career, or study, or whatever by trying to emulate what ha come before. There are precious few guitarists who can pull of drake covers. Many can get it close, but the finesse and mintue details and nuances are outrageously difficult to nail. Trust me. This is most impressive, and if it isn't so for you, then why are even watching this video! Kudos, Plectrum this is a great homage
But if you want to watch Drake to see how he does it, what will you do? I believe we should give nothing but praise to craftsmen like plectrum34 who put such exceptional effort in perfect rendering of an old time master, instead of carelessly unleashing yet another "original" piece of boredom on us, like most bands do. Being original is so overestimated. A perfect recreation is easily dismissed, while it is another manifestation of art. In (old) oriental culture, this was regarded very highly.
In old oriental culture if you wanted to hear a standard song executed true to the original someone had to recreate it for you right there on the spot. Now the artists original song is only a few clicks away. Why would i want to eat tofurkey, when i can get the real stuff just as easily. And yes sometimes Originals are careless and boring, but if thats the case then the artist isnt very talented. Every song ever was at one point an original and im glad those artists didnt just stick to covers.
The availability of the original doesn't alter the craftsmanship or the artistry of the recreator. It affects the usefulness, that is true. Another point is that many "originals" are only original in a superficial way and heavily borrow from existing songs, or are throdded chord structures with uninspired lyrics. Obviously I am just as grateful as you are for artists like Nick Drake, who made truly original music.
How was he overlooked, the chord progressions were obviously well thought, played flawlessely on the albums .....I can't believe the promoters didn't witness Nick, at least watch him live and say damn....this guy is wickedly talented..........makes you wonder
I usually only dip into U Tube videos then click the next link and move on, but I had to let your Hazey Jane cover run it's course. Definately 'better than you worst' - thanks.
I've been asked this before, strangely enough I can't say,I bought this guitar last year on Ebay and I still haven't changed the strings...I'm going for that "dead string" sound that he gets, particularly on the Pink Moon album.
You are absolutely and utterly amazing! I have your cool version of "Parasite" included in my Nick Drake playlist on my Ipod. What are you working on these days? Whatever it is I look forward to hearing it.
Thanks so much for your positive comments and for subscribing. Not working on anything at the moment but I have a few in mind that I'm thinking about doing, once I pick one and get a bit of free time I'll bang it out.
I discovered your playing very recently (I am new to YouTube !) and am so impressed with your musicianship and dedication. The world is a better place whenever I listen to your inspired renditions of Nick Drake songs especially, and I look forward to discovering your next postings. You are blessed with great talent ! Thank you for being there.
its hard to take something done by an American with a faux British accent seriously..you should use your real voice! other than that, you are a very talented guy and props for your depth of understanding of nick's music!
absolutely amazing, you're a fine artist. I still wait for the pleasure to listen to some songs you wrote, maybe one day. again, I like what you do, thanks.
Thanks again for your positive comments,I've been getting a lot of encouragement lately to post something original, perhaps at some point down the line.
btw, I listen almost everyday to your "Son of Sam" cover, I think it´s even better than the original, do you plan on putting your mp3 somewhere? It would be nice to listen to your versions in my mp3 player as well
Hey,thanks so much for your positive comments...a few people have asked,at some point when I get some time I'll likely set up some place to upload all the covers as mp3's for whoever is interested...thanks again.
I always loved the percussion in this song. This was bloody brilliant, mate. I agree with the concensus that vid quality was perfectly a-ok. I think this one's going in my 'favourite covers' playlist. Well done, Rich.
It seems a few people had a rough day today...thanks very much,as I said in the last reply I'm definitely pleased if listening to this had any positive effect.
And again! you've brytened my day. Really! Like a mini catharsis to life's real world problems: Hearing these especial renditions takes me back to a much more pleasant time.
ONLY FIVE STARS YOUTUBE! COME ON!
PS. Hazy Jane 1 just happened to be my favorite Nick Drake song! :)
Thanks again Walt, definitely one of my favorites as well...I agree, there doesn't seem to be any difference using the code, perhaps the audio is a touch louder and brighter but that might be my imagination.
Hey,thanks for your positive comments...I record the background music myself using sounds from my synth/plugins,that's really a lot of the fun of doing it.
