That is not right, he was from Portugal, but it was the Spanish the ones that funded his expedition. Actually he tried to to get the British and Portuguese to fund it first, but the British had no interest or money for it, and the Portuguese were seeking a global route around Africa and India Eastward instead. Americo Vespucio achieved even greater glory than Columbus years later by sailing around the World, hence the New World being named after him. Columbus died hated, forgotten, and poor.
