@prctheif Interesting, I read the article that quote is from recently, next year they will be running I4s. The no replacement for displacement has been long gone, the replacement is boost. But there is no replacement for displacement and boost. If there was you'd see a 2JZ or small ci engine at the top of some drag bracket. For every 2JZ there is a more powerful and faster V8. I'm not saying the engine isn't a monster, it is. But the "best" is a matter of opinion from an import fan.
@prctheif The v8 engine is one of the best configuration of engines that there is for performance, its compact size makes it good to swap into pretty much any car or truck and the performance is also very good, the same way u can strap a turbo to a small 4 cyl u can do the same to a bigger engine like a v8 or in the supra case the l6, and make more power. Forced induction makes a really big difference on how an engine delivers its power, and yes it does replace displacement.

A corvette can produce that with an alumimum block and after market heads on 16 pounds of boost. This setup is very common and prooven. It is more rare than the ricer setup because it is newer and comes mostly from the Corvette crowd which doesn't post videos or get in blog wars on the internet as much.
@prctheif LSX is an iron block and will easily make more power than a 2JZ can N/A and Boosted. You can't compare two iron block engines with such different displacements, it'll make a 2JZ look bad.
@iPROFITDON The LSX does come with an iron block if specified when ordering but it comes with an aluminum block as a base design. And no it will not make more power more easily than a 2JZ. Thats a tuning issue. 2JZ wasnt designed to be an NA engine but i was designed for boost and it handles that extremely well. By the way the 2JZ never looks bad when compared to another engine.
@prctheif It is a tuning issue. But taking an engine with more displacement with an iron block just as strong will make more power. LSX builds are known for making over 2000 hp quite easily, with a much more manageable curve than even a 1000hp 2JZ. You're right it wasn't designed to be NA, but a built LSX can make 1000hp N/A. Formula 1 cars use V8s now, not V10s. Heavy haul 18 wheelers, where power is needed, usually use big V8s not I6s. You don't know what you're talking about.

My favorite car is a Viper and engine is the V10 from the Viper, you won't see a 2JZ making the same emissions legal 3000+hp that those engines can make. Is Swift's 2JZ making 2000hp? And don't tell me it's doing it's easy, I know better than that. The strain on a smaller displacement engine will always be greater than on a larger displacement engine at the same power level.
The replacement for displacement is Forced Induction, I'd take a bone stock supra over a ZO6 any day of the week, even on Fridays. Everywhere i look someone has a vette lmao.

@pranksterDoug Vette has more snap on a launch than a boosted car unless it's brake boosting. He's mostly losing to the Supra, because he has 200 less HP than Supra. Not to mention Supras > Vettes. I'd bet 100 bucks, same cars, starting from a stop that Supra would beat it even more.

@afgoose Muscle cars started out by squeezing the biggest engine possible into the smallest car possible. Yes, most of the cars back than were huge by today's standards, but that doesn't mean that new cars can't be muscle cars. I tend to go off of engine size rather than car size when it comes to classifying it as a muscle car, but that's just me.

@2BarEG Not necessarily. It costs more to make equivalent power in a smaller motor than it does a larger motor, in most cases. For example. Take two motors, one being a late 70's 5.7 with 190 hp and the other a newer small motor, say a 2.0. Given the same budget and equivalent mods, the larger motor will make more power. In addition, smaller motors tend to lack torque at the bottom end and have to reach higher rpms to make power, which can be a major crutch in a 1/4 or 1/8th mile.
@Z28inNC ussually smaller motors dont need to make the same numbers to run the same times because of the weight difference aswell. but i spent a gand total of $17k on my civic including the car and blowing it up, rebuilding it twice and recovering from a total flood out last year which my insurance didnt cover.

@Z28inNC ill explain where the $17k went into though so you have an idea why its so high. the car itself was 2k, the motor was 4k, crank and rods were 1.5k, porting the head was 1k, building it was another grand worth of valve springs and valves/retainers. thats 9.5k right there - the turbo was around 800 but i round to 1k, the first log manifold was a couple hundred, ramhorn was 700, pistons and sleeves together was 600(discounted)...so thats about 11k right there...you get the point.

People compare muscle and imports all the time, When all that matters is who has more money and a good shop to tune. Both muscle and imports have their advantages and disadvantages. @bwfredette I said the viper was turbocharged and you just contradicted yourself. You just said bigger is better and the viper motor is over 8 liters compared to an LS engine. So which is it? And you muscle boys can never rain on my parade i give credit where its due. LS is a great motor but the 2JZ is better. Oh and if you do boost an LS motor it cannot have an aluminum block. Needs to be iron to hold that much power making it wayyy heavier than the inline 6.

A corvette can produce that with an alumimum block and after market heads on 16 pounds of boost. This setup is very common and prooven. It is more rare than the ricer setup because it is newer and comes mostly from the Corvette crowd which doesn't post videos or get in blog wars on the internet as much.

@prctheif LSX is an iron block and will easily make more power than a 2JZ can N/A and Boosted. You can't compare two iron block engines with such different displacements, it'll make a 2JZ look bad.

@iPROFITDON The LSX does come with an iron block if specified when ordering but it comes with an aluminum block as a base design. And no it will not make more power more easily than a 2JZ. Thats a tuning issue. 2JZ wasnt designed to be an NA engine but i was designed for boost and it handles that extremely well. By the way the 2JZ never looks bad when compared to another engine.

@prctheif It is a tuning issue. But taking an engine with more displacement with an iron block just as strong will make more power. LSX builds are known for making over 2000 hp quite easily, with a much more manageable curve than even a 1000hp 2JZ. You're right it wasn't designed to be NA, but a built LSX can make 1000hp N/A. Formula 1 cars use V8s now, not V10s. Heavy haul 18 wheelers, where power is needed, usually use big V8s not I6s. You don't know what you're talking about.

@iPROFITDON The 2JZ can make 2000hp easily. I know bcuz my tuner has the fastest IS300 in the world. Check out SRT IS300. Formula now use v8 i kno but the v10 was still better. From BMW Formula 1 team : "Its vibration curve enters critical territory later than the V10 - from approximately 16,000 rpm - and continues to climb from there...If you don't get a handle on vibrations, they will eat into the service life of the engine and multiply the loads exerted on chassis components.

To make 2000 hp out of 3.4 liter stroked strait 6 requires how much boost and what HP is that configuration naturaly asperated, what fuel pressure and injectors are you seeing in this config.... @prctheif I'd be happy to take a V10 over a V8. My favorite car is a Viper and engine is the V10 from the Viper, you won't see a 2JZ making the same emissions legal 3000+hp that those engines can make. Is Swift's 2JZ making 2000hp? And don't tell me it's doing it's easy, I know better than that. The strain on a smaller displacement engine will always be greater than on a larger displacement engine at the same power level.

@pranksterDoug Vette has more snap on a launch than a boosted car unless it's brake boosting. He's mostly losing to the Supra, because he has 200 less HP than Supra. Not to mention Supras > Vettes. I'd bet 100 bucks, same cars, starting from a stop that Supra would beat it even more.

Yes, most of the cars back than were huge by today's standards, but that doesn't mean that new cars can't be muscle cars. I tend to go off of engine size rather than car size when it comes to classifying it as a muscle car, but that's just me.

@2BarEG Not necessarily. It costs more to make equivalent power in a smaller motor than it does a larger motor, in most cases. For example. Take two motors, one being a late 70's 5.7 with 190 hp and the other a newer small motor, say a 2.0. Given the same budget and equivalent mods, the larger motor will make more power. In addition, smaller motors tend to lack torque at the bottom end and have to reach higher rpms to make power, which can be a major crutch in a 1/4 or 1/8th mile.

@Z28inNC ill explain where the $17k went into though so you have an idea why its so high. the car itself was 2k, the motor was 4k, crank and rods were 1.5k, porting the head was 1k, building it was another grand worth of valve springs and valves/retainers. thats 9.5k right there - the turbo was around 800 but i round to 1k, the first log manifold was a couple hundred, ramhorn was 700, pistons and sleeves together was 600(discounted)...so thats about 11k right there...you get the point.

People compare muscle and imports all the time, When all that matters is who has more money and a good shop to tune. Both muscle and imports have their advantages and disadvantages. Go to a top fuel drag race and see what sorta engines they use. 99% of cars there are american, that's not just a coincidence. I love both kind of cars, people need to quit crying which is faster.
