@CGRafy Thank you. Maybe give it a go yourself. It's very cool trying to breath life into a place that never existed Very rewarding when you get an image or a set you're happy with. Cheers for watching.
Wow!! I can't wait to see more on this project! The details are incredible! I'll have to hang out over here more to learn a thing or two about animation and story telling! I want to learn how to animate after seeing what TheraminTrees did with our collab and what you are doing here! I like the idea of me never having to be on camera again...hahaha!
@GreatGig1 Thanks so much. It's a lot of work but it's so satisfying when you create something from nothing. I like the control (and the not being on camera) it offers. I love that it lets me handle how everything looks and moves... for better or worse... I guess I'm a bit of a control freak creatively. This project is years off from completion but it's been great layering it all up so far. It all may fail miserably, we shall see.
:o)
Thanks again for the kind words. Stop by any time.
Hey Gary, ... i was just watching this after you first posted it. your creative process is wonderfull flow of thought, great inspiration for me in my own world of thought , just wanted to say thank you for sharing this,,,, great food for thought, seeds to move me ahead on my own journey,,,, cheers and happy days to you,,,, Earl
@EarlIam Cheers man. Glad you enjoy the peek behind the curtain - hopefully there'll be more... So much going on right now, OTD has to take a back seat. I'll be posting a new song/vid soonish though. Keep feeding those thoughts.

Yeah thanks for Bingo - it came on DVD with a Maya manual I got years ago as an example of what the program can do. It's a great piece of work aint it? Have a great week.

@AttackHelps Hey there. Well Britain has many accents - mine is Scottish... but quite nondescript. I moved from the west coast to the east coast at 11, then Perth, then Glasgow so it's a bit of a mishmash.
You do all this AND you have a job! This was a brilliant insight in the creative process, so much of which goes un-noticed. This must be a tremendously exciting project and I am so looking forward to keep up with your progress. This is awe inspiring. Thanks for showing us your mind!
WOW! That was a brilliant insight into the methodology of a CGI artist. Gary, you should be teaching this stuff at a University or at a CGI tech school or something.
You explain things in a way that is easy to understand and inspirational at the same time. I feel so lazy when I see your passion and drive as an artist! It makes me want to work extra hard at everything I am passionate about! Thank you!
@wigon Funny you should say that - a uni lecturer wrote to me and said he's using this as an aid to teach story in film school. I don't think you could use it to teach 3D (I thought about doing that in a vlog but I think most people would just fall asleep) I'm glad you reckon the effort shows through. That's the important thing here... to show that it doesn't just happen, that everything should be thought about. Thanks for the awesome comment and I'm glad I didn't bore your socks off.
This is so cool for those of us with none of this inside them. I guess I don't trust my own talent enough to let it flow. No matter I enjoy other souls take on the world so much that I feel I'm not missing out. Sometimes like now, it's great to be in the audience.
Gary...I might not always get here early...thank god I am never too late. A fine piece of work...brilliant! The door is now wide open and I have stepped through with you
I'm in awe. I love your narrative voice, telling the story of the making of this piece. So much work, but the thoughtfulness of the details and themany- layered depths of the piece really do convey the sense of a world that lives and breathes.... veeeery spooky and delicious. Thank you so much for this insight . Such a tantalizing glimpse of what's to be...
You are one spooky dude at times Gary - I love it!!
Thanks for the detailed background and information on how you came to create your sets. You really do look in depth don't you? I confess I enjoyed the picture you painted around Grandad. Dammit I want to meet him now. lol I think your subtlety is great and Open the Door is going to be just fantastic - it already looks it.
@thegasworks Thanks so much. Yeah - it's a side of the story telling precess that's not really talked about for some reason. There are some great examples of visual story telling in most films of a certain quality... sitcoms are great for this too... lots of unappreciated set artists there.
Great work and so much attention to detail! I love how the set can show the audience the history and character of Grandfather! Thanks for the interesting and intuitive walk through your project! Kudos!!!!
Gary, it's always fun to watch your projects as they develop. Your eye to detail and the story behind the elements are fantastic (as well as your rotoscope manipulation samples) Knowing that you are going to score this too is just icing on the cake. I'm already in love with the story and can't wait to see the finished version!
Really dug the soundtrack playing throughout this, with just the "making of" being this well put together and engaging, I can't wait to see the final project-
Gary, what an incredible project. You are an amazing animator and storyteller. thank you for taking us behind the scenes and demonstrating how you create your brilliant vids :)))
Well, you know me....WOW!! It's amazing how all of that work and detail will go into a picture that is in the background. I can't wait to see the "next slice"...this just keeps getting better and better. As you said - Fairtytales are horrific. Funny how I found them magical and harmless as a child. I just asked my son, "when you think of fairytales, what do you think of"?
Excellent work Gary. The thing I admire most about your work, besides the work itself, is the amount of dedication and steadfastness it takes to see a project, like this, through. Quite stunning.
@bowlingballout Cheers man. Yeah it's best if I don't think about it as a whole at this stage - that part was done when I wrote the script - and just keep my head down. I try to treat every little part like it's own project... if I considered the amount of those little projects I have left on the list I'd have a meltdown. Baby steps suit me fine.
Your vid is very interesting and give me a once-over for ya hard-working-time in the last months/years! (And that for a 3 or 4 minutes vid....unbelievable...) Also is it interesting to see...what is in your head!?!? Enough constructiveness for a lot of awesome vids in the future i find! Finally...i have a new Screen and i can see all your vids in HD!! :-D Thankz for sharing from your work and thoughts...very inspiring! P.S. Why not apply to Gorillaz for the next Music Vid? ;-)))
Good line about 'if fairy tales were true, most of them would be horrific'. It's a wonder any of us could sleep at night when we were kids...but I guess it led to our imaginations being able later in life to produce works of art like this one. Cheers!
it's amazing to see how much imagination and creativity you have, and transport this to an animation that well. The details and the thoughts about everything is wonderful, i can't wait to see this, seriously!
@SPACEFACE70 Maya for the 3D, After Effects for comping, grading and so on, Premier to edit these making ofs, Photoshop to create the textures, Audition to create and record the music a sound effects and Particle Illusion for... well particle effects.
I'm Italian and I don't understand everything you say, but I understand that "Create Myself" is a masterpiece and I congratulate you on your ability and graphic arts. I just put in my favorite videos. Thank you for your wonderful work.
Listening to you speak about this project is like listening to really good poetry.
Your attention to detail has never escaped me...however, the enormity of this particular project is mind-boggling. And, these insights you give us, are so generous. When I see this in it's completion....I'll be thinking, "IMPOSSIBLE". Nobody could pull this off. But, you show us that there IS a process, and that it CAN be done. I cannot thank you enough.
@Clobberbob55 Another award winning comment from Bob!
:o)
Thank you so much mate. That was a big part of my motive when doing these vlogs - many people seem to think this kind of stuff is somehow mystical, a gift, that either you're born being able to do this or not. If there is such a thing as being gifted it's a lot of hard work, patience and passion... as you know.
:o)
Thanks for spectacular comment bro. You're one cool guy. Have a lovely day.
Wow man! I can just imagine the hours spent on a project of this size and detail! Thanks for the insight. Most enjoyed. Looks like it will be sensational when finished! Hat's off to you Gary, taking on a project like this! Inspiring stuff Sir!
Oh Wow - the level of detail is stunning. The nicks and scratches on the filing cabinet. The kitchen is totally real. Love the granddad face. I enjoyed hearing your reflections on your process, really makes me appreciate what you are building. The little teaser at the end is so exciting. What you are making takes a lot of commitment and it is going to be totally worth it. Great work Gary!
@eaglecrowowl Hey Caren! Always nice to hear from you. Thanks for watching.
:o)
I hope you're right. It's a big 'un. I feel that if I think too long about the project as a whole my head will cave in... so I try to keep my eyes down at this stage and focus on getting what's in front of me done right... trusting that the over arching framework I built into the script will hold up... scary. Thanks so much for the great comment.
Wow, Gary! I really appreciate the time and attention you've given to the props. Rene Magritte sprang to mind as I was watching this, you're like him in that you challenge the viewers perception of reality :) I went back and had another look at Vlog 1 & 2, and who did I see; Grant! :0) I cannot wait to see it all come together for you, and I'm seriously looking forward to analyzing every detail. What an eye opener this Vlog has been, I feel as if I've been awakened somehow! You are so cool! :0)
@fuckoffycus Thanks Trish. Great of you to stop by.
:o)
Let the awakening continue! I'm so glad you liked it. You're bang on. The idea was that the vlog should help you think about how a set is put together... and this in turn would hopefully alter your view of the teaser at the end. Cheers for the great comment and kind words. You rock.
this is so wonderful, your share of the process....I keep telling one son..he must sit and watch these, as he as interest (he thinks) in design, animation.....HAD YOU known the complexities,,,,,you may have dived in anyway...;-) the creative process marches on, in the gifted ones......and the world a richer place for your "sticktoittiveness" thankyou. for your sharing of the processes......so kind of you... life is about sharing, learning....:-)you give a gift, of yourself!
@smartbluecat :-) --forgot to say --big thanks to Julia--she shared in the first place,,as well as others, my "helpers"..I'm likely to miss things,,just get busy..!:-)
You've really got me interested in this animation/movie! I think it's going to be great when you are finished! I really hope it makes it to the BIG SCREEN in the U.S. because I would love to go see it!!
I love the way you tell the story of your process: it is an engrossing look at your creative considerations. And the sneak peaks of the sets are so much fun to see--so much layering of story in every room.
@tinySpectacle Thank you Lo. Yeah It's such an important part of the process it's a shame that it's often overlooked. The challenge involved in telling a story through location was one the main things I wanted to attempt with Open the Door. It's so much work and I simply don't have enough computing power to create much of the detail I want to... but that compromise has forced me to consider what's important on a whole other level. Cheers for dropping by. Always nice to see you here.
Omg !! Gary, this is monumental !, the attention to details and the representing values of items throughout the story is wow ! O__O I did not blink lol... but, whats a great short film without an Epic score ? ^___^ Hurray for you and your computer/laptop, it sure is handling a lot with all that rendering ! Cheers and take your time... hurry up !! lol ~ Gypsy
This is fantastic!! Love it Gary!!! Loved the part where you were doodling & then showed how what you see then comes through. Love the act of creation, the process and how you bring it to life!! Wow!! Fabulous!!
It's amazing catching these glimpses of the world your conjuring up there Gary. Every tiny piece is beautiful in it's own right, everything perfectly crafted to help shape the wonderfully surreal fairytale that already feels Grimm in the best possible sense of the word.... can't wait for you to tell us this story G.... I'm already gripped. =)
@loopyone73 I'm glad you're gripped mate, you may have to hold on a while yet. Thanks so much for the extremely kind words bro. You are a generous and eloquent fellow and again I say thank you.
......and I LOVE the wall and the magnetic letters on the fridge and the way the gardening tools appear on the shelf and EVERYTHING...
pure magic, must get back to making my pumpkin lanterns now - I am the witch on sunday - Lisa has a party and I will have 11 small ones venturing up my garden path
@roadbikegarden You're never a witch, J... well maybe a pretend one.
:o)
Thanks so much for the support it means a lot. I'm so glad you liked this - I never know if people are going to find these vlogs boring or not. I'm happy you found this one interesting. Have a lovely week.
Well, I watched, (you were on 53 views) and then I watched again, and then I watched again. now you are on 91 views!.
Ha Ha - this is WONDERFUL, mesmerising to watch. I am so incredibly amazed at the detail you show which in turn makes your talent more apparent.
I have saved to favourite, will feature and share because, of all creative people on YT, you are the most magical. I love the imagery, especially Grandad's table with the heavy metal feet. run out of words allowed !
It's coming along swimmingly Gary! There is an end in sight! It's going to be awesome, and the biggest and coolest 3-D animation project any one man has ever done. Keep going. You'll get there :)
awesome work man!, I think this vlog encapsulates a lot about you and your work ethic ,your style, and level of thought you put into everything you do. Apparently details matter :) . I think it explains to the outside world pretty effectively what you're doing, what to expect, what's involved and that you are officially insane. I like the explosion, very Michael Bay :-p I hope you make half the money of Jim C ;-) G
Good to hear from you, and some of the complexities of this project. As I watch and listen it seems on the scale of Avatar, yet is only you doing the majority of the work. But that doesn't surprise me.
can you put the fairy in deviantart?

Also is it interesting to see...what is in your head!?!? Enough constructiveness for a lot of awesome vids in the future i find! Finally...i have a new Screen and i can see all your vids in HD!! :-D Thankz for sharing from your work and thoughts...very inspiring! P.S. Why not apply to Gorillaz for the next Music Vid? ;-)))

Good line about 'if fairy tales were true, most of them would be horrific'. It's a wonder any of us could sleep at night when we were kids...but I guess it led to our imaginations being able later in life to produce works of art like this one. Cheers!

Gary, I am just completely in awe of you.

You rock.

this is so wonderful, your share of the process....I keep telling one son..he must sit and watch these, as he as interest (he thinks) in design, animation.....HAD YOU known the complexities,,,,,you may have dived in anyway...;-) the creative process marches on, in the gifted ones......and the world a richer place for your "sticktoittiveness" thankyou. for your sharing of the processes......so kind of you... life is about sharing, learning....:-)you give a gift, of yourself!

tinySpectacle 1 year ago
@tinySpectacle Thank you Lo. Yeah It's such an important part of the process it's a shame that it's often overlooked. The challenge involved in telling a story through location was one the main things I wanted to attempt with Open the Door. It's so much work and I simply don't have enough computing power to create much of the detail I want to... but that compromise has forced me to consider what's important on a whole other level. Cheers for dropping by. Always nice to see you here.
