The Standells are not from Massachusetts. Ed Cobb wrote the song after a visit to Boston, during which he was robbed on a bridge over the Charles River. None of the Standells had been to Boston before the song was released. In 1997, "Dirty Water" was decreed the "official victory anthem" of the Red Sox, and is played after every home victory. In 2007 the original group members were deemed honorary citizens of Massachusetts by official decree by the Massachusetts State legislature.
Mike Douglas was born in Chicago and died at age 81 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Diahann Carroll (born Carol Diahann Johnson) is 77, was married to Vic Damone from 1987 to 1996, grew up in Harlem, went to high school with Billy Dee Williams, was actually engaged to David Frost for a time, and is a breast cancer survivor.
Dickie Dodd had been the original drummer for The Bel-Airs, known for the hit surf rock song "Mr. Moto", before joining The Standells. He left in 1968 to try it solo.
Episode Guide: "5-27-66: Diahann Carroll concludes her co-hosting duties; guests are The McGuire Sisters, actor Walter Slezak, ventriloquist Shari Lewis and politician Gideon Hausner." I think who actually was on were Mike, Diahann Carroll, The Standells, a very spunky Shari Lewis, and the politician Gideon Hausner.
Dihann Carroll was beautiful then, she was beautiful 20 years later when she just happened to walk by me in NYC and she is still beautiful on White Collar.
Always amazed me that Mike Douglas was able to get really cool acts on the show... but he was like a fish out of water when he was around them. Douglas was not the coolest when interacting with them. Makes you wonder who was REALLY booking these cool acts of the day.
Took me a bit to realise the drummer was the one singing lead. Live.
This video does help show why bands like this lipsynched to the superior studio productions rather than go fully live. But little did anyone realise at the time that this song would be an anthem for so many Boston sports championships nearly half a century later. Those opening chords are the first thing played at Fenway Park and Boston Garden the moment the home team wins.
@gropingwithastoker Which is a fuckin joke. fenway has turned into a circus of Neil Diamond, The Wave...and NOISE...NOISE....NOISE !!! Real sox fans do not recognize any of this shit. It's fun like........once. Not 81 times a year.
this is live and the drummer is singing lead! someone should have bought him and new ride cymbal!!! it has a huge chunk broken out of it, cant believe he went on the t.v. with that!!!!!!!!
@nealharpole1 Not that there should be an excuse for going on live with a broken cymbal. But The Standells were probably on tour at the time this was recorded, promoting themselves during the year (1966) that both this tune and their "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White" were popular) and probably had come in the studio probably not realizing that the cymbal broke the previous evenings.
@TheWhatsinaname I can tell you that this was right about when "Dirty Water" was still on the top of the charts, during the Standells very first tour. And yes, Dick's cymbal had just boken only a few nights before. Dick was a terrific talent .
@Chizoom they were on the clay cole show but they didnt play live [clay cole was a straight pop singer like mike douglas that scrapped his show because he didnt like heavy rock music which was becomeing prevalant, a recording engineer at nbc quit hullabaloo and went to japan and worked on the olympics for the same reason ]
@thetinalyons The Electric Prunes also were on the show. But then there was some extra 'dorkiness' to that show as Modgirl1967 mentioned above when they appeared, plus, it was lipsynched, although in color. Hope it answers your question. peace
@mewrth When tony bennett was on the mike douglas show he had his sons rock group quacky duck on mike did the same shtick introduceing them pretending like he didnt know they were tony bennetts sons .

One of only 2 bands that I know of that the drummer was the lead singer. The other was Rare Earth.
