Fantastic song, meaningful, true, and who cares what anyones sexuallity is, were all human, loving people. love is what makes the world go round, whoever it is with, love conquers all.
This Guy has a great voice, whats his sex got to do with it. I'm a st8 male but do i get questioned about it.... not in the way gay guys do. I would have 1 gay friend to 100 st8 friends as they are better people. ps cheers Marc for a great song!

I knew this song first in the 1970s by French singer Charles Aznavour, who write it - in French ( Comme ils disent) but also wrote the english version of it ,which he also sang.( or better: still sings)
@copperpotbaby It is hard to not forget that even Marc himself is gay too. He did not pick this Aznavour song for nothing. He also has always been one of the great examples of -and for- the gay community. Believe me, we can still use people like Marc and their talent ,to show people who are not gay ,that we have a right to be in this world.I do know what you meant with your remark , but Marc is one of us in the first place and second a worldartist.
@eartha80 Why is this gay discussion anyway? I am straight woman, and don't care about who is gay and who is not. This is a distraction from the great music that he makes.
@v1de0gamr He used to have his head shaved but he's not bald, just grey! he had a motorbike accident and nearly died, this is what caused his hair to turn colour.
the live version from the twelve years of tears would melt the heart of a thug. this, yes, lacks something in comparison, but I think it's an extremely important song, whether you're gay or not.
The song has been in my mind since the first time I heard it on the radio a few years ago. It was a live version where Marc sang against the sole accompaniment of a piano. It was very beautiful.
funny how the words in the english version make a quite different song from the original writen by aznavour, I like both versions.
Only one thing ( please Almond's fans don't yell), I've heard ''comme ils disent'' and '' what makes a man a man'' sung by many people ... and think Marc Almond's version is by far one of the least touching... there's something missing, I don't exactly know what ... maybe humility in the interpretation
Who's complaining? It's a song that so many of us CAN relate to. It's about a lonely man who is trying to make sense out of a world that doesn't want him...but applaudes when he steps on stage. This song is older than you are. "MARC" isn't bitching. He's asking ..."What makes a man a man?!!!" You're not looking at the heart of the song. You're reading too much into something that just IS.
And...Marc is just singing it...very well but the song was written and performed by Cahrles Aznavour YEARS before it was cool to sing about this "life." Well done, sweetie!
I can see your point Timmay973nj. And I did get it when it was released, by the way.
But regarding these lyrics and perhaps today's world; many complaint about discrimination and yet, discriminate (based on race, creed, political views, sexual orientation, financial status).
Now you would agree that completely invalidates their protests? I think it makes the lyrics in this song sound as much about discrimination as they do about hypocrisy.
THe song was written by Charles Aznavour in the 195os before 'gay liberation' was even the twinkle of an eye of a concept...The lyrics have to be seen in that context. It's about the bitter sweet life of someone who's life was lived largely 'underground' because it was unacceptable - and outlawed - in most socities. Marc Almond has sung many of the great 'chansons' (Franco-Belgian lyrical songs like this) by many of the greats, including Jacques Brel.

@copperpotbaby I understand now; I read "skinhead" and wondered if he was part of the skinhead subculture.

I heard Marc sing this live in Dublin last night and it was amazing. Songs are stories but this one is an encyclopedia.

I never got this song. If Marc complains about being discriminated, how can he explain this:
"...We love to pull apart someone
Or spread some gossip, just for fun
Or start a rumor..."
Isn't he discriminating?
Then, he has no right to complain.

OK, so Charles Aznavour and the 50's french society.
But I have seen Marc perform this song. And the way he performs it had much more to do with the 90's.
