your cage is so big when you add another thing to it and your hamsters find it they thing wow i have neb=ver seen this before its proberly because i have never been here before!!!!!!!!!!
Cages like that are only meant for breeding hamtsers so the Babies can have room and some breeders have up to 1-3 babies a day so u need big cages.infact i once had breeders but they once had 50 babies a week so i had to get rid of them but i stilll have the cage with 5 grown Dwarf Hamsters
actually wood shaving is not bad at all if your house is dust free...one thing about wood shaving is that it attracts dust particles and affect your hamster respiratory system...the best beding for hamster is called carefresh but that bedding is way too expensive...i'll recommend fresh world bedding...it is cheap and it works like no other bedding also caught amonia odorswhich is produced by hamster's pee due to bakind soda....
Sorry to say that your hamster is most likely bored. Since it's only for 10 or 15 minutes, it doesn't sound like the problem is really bad or anything, but hamsters are very smart and he obviously knows you are still nearby and is attempting to get your attention. This can be solved by providing new toys/chews for him (it's your bedtime, but not his, remember! He's nocturnal, so will naurally be awake at night. ) But don't give these to him until then, or he'll get bored of them.
The above answer is possible, But i'd also like to pitch that as i hope we all know - Hamsters teeth continuously grow. Constant chewing is the hamsters way of "filing" its teeth down - and that is why a chew will help to stop the constant gnawing.
Yep, but luckily they've always gone back in! I'll find a tube has poped out or something and there's food scattered all over the table, but Gucci and Prada are still in their house! They must know they've got it good!
I've got two winter white dwarf hamsters and yes, they have escaped, but only if I haven't put the tubes back in firmly after cleaning it out. They always went back into their homes, even if they got out! They know they have it good!
Nope, just takes some dedication, effort & practice. It really does get easier with practice. I'm now as fast cleaning all of those pieces as when I started with just three cages!
Carefresh bedding, though I also use something called Breeder's Select, which is designed for cats. It is in pellet form, absorbs very well, but isn't at all snuggly, so I also use the fluffy Carefresh. Both work together very well!
I put mine in the small exercise ball, design especially for dwarfs. The large ones are too heavy for them to control and they could end up getting tumbled about, when they build up too much momentum. Also, be sure to keep a close eye on your dwarf hamsters in the ball, because they tire quite quickly and should not be left inside once they run out of energy.
I'd worry about the wool unravelling and becoming a noose...I'd stick to natural, more fragile fibres, so that your hamster didn't get caught up in it. Always get something that says 'Hamster safe' on it.
You'd be surprised by the number of times somebody has suggested using artificial fibres and fluffy cotton wool for bedding. And they weren't kidding. Just wanted to make sure! : )
I provide lots of bedding, but my hamster moves it if she does not like it in that particular place. She prefers some cages bare, while others are piled up with bedding!
No, all syrians will fight to the death if housed together. The hamsters I've got now (winter whites) are dwarfs, siblings, both female and even they do not get on together. You've got to keep a close eye on them, even if they've previously lived together. When buying more than one hamster, it's important that you have at least one cage available for each hamster, just in case you have to separate them all.
just about. if its just a short length of the smooth one, then they can scramble up. they can get up longer ones if there is a ladder in, there are ribs on the inside, or they have alot of motive. i.e. a cat at the bottom.
Yes, they can now, but until they learned, I used mouse ladders (also sold by Rotastak.) I still put them in, although my girls usually by-pass them or bite and try to remove them!
i just got a hamster, though its for an ag class experiment, afterwards i get to take it home. apparently the people who sold us the hamsters were not taking good care of them. they didnt have very nice coats of fur, so bad diet, they were all togaher so they fought all the time and mine is missing an eye because of it. it can still see though, and they are all freindly. we will take good care of them, and make them healthy again.
i had to dwarf hamsters and the used to fight. i bought them from a specialist pet shop and they said 2 males would be fine together. in the end 1 killed the other.
I personally use carefresh and another kind of recycled paper-type bedding. Just as a warning, pine and cedar are toxic to some hamsters, especially dwarfs. I like how the paper-type beddings keep adour locked in and don't smell bad when they get soiled, like some wood and husk-type beddings do, but it is really up to your personal choice.
im about to buy my first hamster, probly going to be a robo or a syrian, and i was wondering if they like sand in their cages or of they prefere saw shaveings or woodchips can someone help me?
I have 4 winter whites...The one is white, the other 3 are gray with white bellies...These 3 have turned all white now...I have one dark just like yours but it doesn't turned white yet....
You can get them with different markings (white-face, Agouti, mottled etc.) That is why some of yours look different, but I believe they will still turn all-white except for their dorsal stripe, in the correct conditions.
Yes, they are a little dark, but they have the line along the back. It may not be apparent from the video, cos the room light is on, bt they most definately winter whites. I've even had them turn white, when their daylight hours shorten! I had them in my room to begin with, where it is cooler (aircon) and they turned white! I'm pretty sure no other dwarf hamsters do that!
Yes I use a mixture of carefresh and a paper pellet-type cage litter. I recently tried wallnut bedding, but didn't like the smell when the bedding got soiled. Also my two are almost completely toilet trained, so I can change their potties everyday and they hardly smell at all. And of course I still change their cages, on top of this.
I clean two or three cages and some tubes each day, washing in hot, soapy water, then drying all in the sun befoe reassembly. It takes me about an hour, each day, although I've gotten good at taking apart/putting together. All in all, it doesn't get very dirty, bcause my two are now completely toilet-trained. I replace my toilets regularly (they're less than $5 each) because hamster pee can get kinda smelly!
Yep, I work and also I've bought this in bits and pieces, as I could afford it, over the course of 13 years. Birthday and Christmas money helped, when I was still a kid and when I saw that my hamsters were happy, it also made me happy! :)
I do believe it! I work, however and sometimes have to do overtime and weekend shifts, so I don't have enough time to devote to more than a couple. When I'm away at work, they're either sleeping, or entertained by all that space to roam. They hardly notice my presence/absence!
Yes, I favour Carefresh, too. Over the years I've tried everything; wood-chip - never cedar or pine; but found that this began to transmit mites to my hamsters. I've tried corn-cob bedding and walnut husk-bedding, but didn't like the way either of these smelled when they got soiled. I've stuck with breeder's select (paper pellet-type)cat litter, which traps damp and odour very well, but isn't snuggly. And of course the carefresh, whch my hammies love to snuggle in!
Yep and with other types of wood chip, I've found my hamster's have picked u mites from them. Paper-types are always best because they are treated for mites and they strangle like fluff and don't cause blockages if they are swallowed.
Not all dwarfs get along together. These two squabble and because I work long hours, sometimes, I don't want them to get injurred while I'm out of the house and not around to supervise them. I've also have rather blood-thirsty dwarf hamsters in the past, who have actually hurt each other, so I err on the side of caution. They are perfectly happy on their own (wouldn't you be, if you had a home like that?) and I'd rather they both be happy AND healthy. :)
I use Carefresh and a brand called, 'Breeder's Select,' which is actualy type of recycled paper pellet cat litter product. It's really great at absorbing moisture and keeping odour locked in, but it's not too cuddly, which is why I also use carefresh, so my girl have something nice to snuggle into!
No, they are small hamsters and I rotate which cgaes I clean each day of the week. I clean maximum three cages each day, but mostly it is two per day and everything gets done around every 7-10 days. They NEVER get to the stage where they are very dirty, tho.
Yes, I've never had problems with my dwarf hamsters in barred cages. If it will ease your mind, keep them in a non-barred cage while they are still small and then connect that to one that is barred, once they get bigger. And they'll love all of the extra space!
I think that's dreadful that somebody would abandon pets like that! Thank goodness your friend found them. I'm way jealous of your little hamster kingdom there.
No, I clean a cage or two and some pipes each day, so all in all, it's not that time consuming. After plenty of practice, I can get it done pretty fast, even when dismantling the pipes!
In the past my hamsters have loved to chew up the cardboard toilet paper insides and use them as bedding. Prada and Gucci don't really chew on them, that much, but they do like to run in and out of the them. I put them in there just for them to play in. The longer ones tend to be too narrow for syrians to squeeze thru, but they are just pefect in size for the dwarfs...
Mine are about three months or so. They don't have any problem with the wheels. I'm sure yours will get there, tho. Don't give up hope! Feed them well, but not anything suggary and sweet thngs, because dwarf hamsters are prone to becoming diabetic with a suggary diet. Stick to vegetables, rather than fruits, because those are also high is sugars. I feed Prada mealworms, which are a good source of protein. She is so much smaller than Gucci, I want to try and help her catch up!
They are two winter white dwarf hamsters and they are very happy in their huge home. Hamsters have such short life-spans, I like to make it as happy as I can!
Good luck on cleaning

Yes, I've never had problems with my dwarf hamsters in barred cages. If it will ease your mind, keep them in a non-barred cage while they are still small and then connect that to one that is barred, once they get bigger. And they'll love all of the extra space!

That's cute, but I've already chosen names. They're now called Gucci and Prada...they names had to be fitting for my two little princesses!

I think that's dreadful that somebody would abandon pets like that! Thank goodness your friend found them. I'm way jealous of your little hamster kingdom there.

No, I clean a cage or two and some pipes each day, so all in all, it's not that time consuming. After plenty of practice, I can get it done pretty fast, even when dismantling the pipes!

is is hard to clean it all?

In the past my hamsters have loved to chew up the cardboard toilet paper insides and use them as bedding. Prada and Gucci don't really chew on them, that much, but they do like to run in and out of the them. I put them in there just for them to play in. The longer ones tend to be too narrow for syrians to squeeze thru, but they are just pefect in size for the dwarfs...

hey how come you put toilet roleons or pipes srrry my english is little screechy why you use the toilet paper thingy

Hamsters have such short life-spans, I like to make it as happy as I can!

very cute! Best of luck with your new hamsters!
