Hi everyone :) i am at university studying graphic design and i have chosen to do a brief on the wizard of oz. I am going to be producing typographical posters to bring back this classic film and give it life once again so that people want to watch the film. It would be a great help to get some feedback on what people remember about this classic film or any other thoughts would be much appreciated :) thanks Hayley. If you could PM me that would be even better.
Just the shot to get the live crow to pick up the bunch of straw that fell out of the Scarecrow took a great deal of time, and all for nothing because it got cut.
And yes, that's an actual crow in that shot, unlike the following ones where a fake crow is flying in circles.
I like the Scarecrow being able to "fly" (actually, he's just supposed to be jumping), but showing the sequence of him bouncing off the fence in reverse is stupid and tiresome.
@hebneh I agree, the shot of the crow must have taken a long time! It's all great except where they run it backwards. It's indeed too much and borders on silly.
he said worthy of you if you read up on this in the special adition dvd it explains why they deleted this part of the scarecrows dance ray had a crush on judy and that was basically his way of proposing to her. they thought that was inappropriate so they deleted it i hope that clears up thing.
@zelrash - Not true...Bolger was married to his wife for 58 years (up until he passed away in 1987), and considering Garland was only 16 at the time, I doubt he had any kind of romantic interest in her...the dance was deleted solely for reasons of time, since the rough cut of the film was nearly 2 hours, and even "important" pictures rarely ran longer than 90 min in 1939.
wow, i watched this video like hundred times (using music from deleted part for dance in a show) and this is the first time i saw that deleted was misspelled :P:P:P
Thats such a racist dance, Im quite sure its an Indian-American dance or something...He says near the beginning after he leans back he says "Ill be scratchin' my balls until they start hatcin'"

@leopardsleaping and possibly a remaining reference to a discarded plot line in the movie - hunk and dorothy are in love, hence their close relationship on the journey and her closing remark "I think i'll miss you most of all"
This was cut after the change of director, from Richard Thorpe, it had been shot by Busby Berkely as second unit, and the film being over budget, L B Meyer ordered shots to be pruned to finish the film on time, as Meyer thought the film was not going to return it's costs, which it did not at first, it was a failure at the box office, but careful re-release revived interest, and it went on to classic status.
This was one reason why Ray Bolger was the Scarecrow and not the Tinman (which is what he was originally cast for). He wanted more energetic dance scenes. Ironic that this was cut..
When Warner Bros. brought Oz back to theaters back in 98, they actually thought about re-editing the dance back into the movie, but changed their minds, figuring that doing so would be tampering w/a classic.
@TheCherrybomb101girl I own a vhs version of this movie and a special edition dvd.... this is definitly a deleted scene..... They only have half of this performance in the movie.
@TheCherrybomb101girl it was cut but only the part within the scene (if that makes sense) The early and last part are intact but the middle section was removed but can be found on the dvd on I think, extras.
@noniuice O-kay :-) It just looker so fumiliar and I remembered the whole scene was in the actual movie, but I guess I was wrong --> thanks for correcting my mistake! :-) A very nice scene, those were THE days!.

It may have been edited, but the Scarcrow and his dancing is the 1st thing Dorothy encounters after leaving Munchkin Land. I don't remember him going up on the pumpkin or going through the fence or the reverse dancing. I believe it was edited out.

Is it because I'm too obesessed with Wicked that I go aww when he mentions his heart's all full of pain and that he'd be worthy of 'you' (Elphie in my mind) if he had a brain?
I'd pretend to be a vampire Like in stories 'round the campfire I'd suck your bloody froth Yes the thing I'd be best at Is impersonating Lestat If I only were a Goth In my casket purse I'm toutin' Einsturzende Neubauten And pagan hymns to Thoth Yes the world would be depressing Over death I'd be obsessing And this corpse that I'm undressing Would be sexier, I'm guessing With my diet I'd get scurvy And I'd worship Peter Murphy If I only were a Goth
I'd be thinner, I'd be taller Go clubbing in my collar With skin pale as a moth Dressed in black, I'd go creepin' While the normal folk are sleepin' If I only were a Goth With my hair up, I'd look fancy Like Siouxsie and the Banshees With silk or velvet cloth Dressed in boots, never sandals And the room would be lit with candles If I only were a Goth Yes I'd wanna die From the bottom of my heart impure Would I like another clove? Well, sure And after that, we'll go listen to The Cure
Because studio executives didn't want to film to last more than 100 minutes, 'pegcage'. Several other sequences were deleted- "The Jitterbug", of which the soundtrack exists and the ONLY visual images from the number exist in Harold Arlen's "home movies" taken during the production; and a reprise of "Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead", as Dorothy returned to the Emerald City after "killing" the Witch (soundtrack only). Bert Lahr's "If I Were King Of the Forest" was also trimmed a bit...
this is like one of the best damn movies of all time... Follow the yellowbrick road and you can find the wizard too. Just look for those Leprechauns who took all our gold.
I recall hearing that Busby Berkeley worked on this sequence - it certainly has a lot of his touches. Frankly, I find it very gimmicky and am glad it was cut. In fact, even though seeing all the bits that were edited out is fun (like 'The Jitterbug"), the producers made the right decisions. "Oz" is one of the few movies that is over before you realize it, and leaves you wanting more. There isn't a wasted second of screen time or dialog.
The reason this dance scene was cut is mainly because the scene between Hunk and Dorothy talking about Hunk going off to college was cut. It wouldn't make much sense if the Scarecrow was wanting to deserve Dorothy by getting a brain, if his human counterpart in Kansas didn't to begin with. It's a shame, but we have to live with it, just as we have to live with losing the Jitterbug. Ah, well, such is life.
well the bouncing off the fence in reverse was weak, but the rest was great. shame they cut anything from that film, and they cut a lot other than bolger's dance.
I recall that it was included in one of MGM's "That's Entertainment" retrospective documentaries. Too bad the jitterbug scene was lost in a vault fire. Only home movies and the soundtrack survive of the jitterbug scene. I recall that the poppies' aroma caused the four to get high rather than sleepy leading to the jitterbug sequence.
ugh! this scene is so annoying. it just drags on and on. I especially don't like it when he flies, it's too much. I'm glad they deleted it. the only part I like is when he does the splits, they should have kept that bit..
I'm also glad they deleted the jitterbug, it added nothing to the story.
they also should have deleted the lion's second solo.
... And I think they should have given Dorothy a second solo, maybe near the end, before the balloon flies off accidentally, when Dorothy is at her happiest before the deception, so she would have a happy song to counterbalance Over the Rainbow, or even they could have made a song out of "There's no place like home".
And come to think of it, the Wizard could have had a musical number, when he revealed his true self.
@wattever333 - They actually did give Dorothy a reprise of "Over the Rainbow" while she was locked in the Witch's castle, but it was deleted...however, an audio recording survives, and it really shows Judy Garland's power as a dramatic actress!
@wattever333 - They also considered a musical number (the "Wizard's Song") for the scene where the Wizard gave Dorothy's companions what they wanted, but lyricist EY Harburg thought the scene worked better in dialogue, so it was written as such.
The splitting of the legs.lowering himself to the floor (starting at 2:32) and coming up again with just the legs to lift him (no hands!) was a trademark Bolger routine. He'd used it in "The Great Ziegfeld" three years earlier. It's great here because it's the sort of thing you'd think would come natural to a straw-legged scarecrow. Quite a shame this sequence was cut.

@ragemanchoo82 Because the guy who posted this video does not own the rights to the audio (aka, sound) in this scene, if he uploaded it as "deleted scenes" rather than "deleated", youtube would force him to remove the audio. if you look at other videos of "deleted scene wizard of oz scare crow dance", most of them are silent videos (no audio). get it?
@maxbest2 why do you consider it being awkward?! Also it's not why it was cut, it's because the movie was way too long so they had to cut some 'extra' stuff out they didn't consider necessary for the story.
I love this longer version because it shows Ray Bolger's amazing wiggly dance style. I feel he was so underrated as a dancer. He was just as good as Astair & Gene.
There is a 50 year documentary on youtube (6 parts) that shows parts of this deleted scene and they said they cut this because the movie was getting too long. However, I agree with you, this scene is stupid and it's a good thing that it was cut.
This is Fiddlesticks!

ugh! this scene is so annoying. it just drags on and on. I especially don't like it when he flies, it's too much. I'm glad they deleted it. the only part I like is when he does the splits, they should have kept that bit..
I'm also glad they deleted the jitterbug, it added nothing to the story.
they also should have deleted the lion's second solo.
wattever333 1 year ago
... And I think they should have given Dorothy a second solo, maybe near the end, before the balloon flies off accidentally, when Dorothy is at her happiest before the deception, so she would have a happy song to counterbalance Over the Rainbow, or even they could have made a song out of "There's no place like home".
And come to think of it, the Wizard could have had a musical number, when he revealed his true self.
wattever333 1 year ago 2
... No, I don't know the broadway version of the Wizard of Oz with all its extra numbers. And I'm not thinking of the original book either.
wattever333 1 year ago

Quite a shame this sequence was cut.

probably has to put deleated because most of the videos marked deleted have the audio taken away for copy right reasons

@ragemanchoo82 Because the guy who posted this video does not own the rights to the audio (aka, sound) in this scene, if he uploaded it as "deleted scenes" rather than "deleated", youtube would force him to remove the audio. if you look at other videos of "deleted scene wizard of oz scare crow dance", most of them are silent videos (no audio). get it?

Interesting and fun to watch but quite awkward. Obvious why it was cut.

I wish we could see the famous missing "jitterbug" sequence from the haunted woods portion of the movie...
ragemanchoo82 1 year ago
@maxbest2 why do you consider it being awkward?!

@maxbest2 why do you consider it being awkward?! Also it's not why it was cut, it's because the movie was way too long so they had to cut some 'extra' stuff out they didn't consider necessary for the story.

around 2:58 he doesn't have a face. must have been the stunt double.

I love this longer version because it shows Ray Bolger's amazing wiggly dance style. I feel he was so underrated as a dancer. He was just as good as Astair & Gene.

they probable deleted it because they realized how rediculous the animation looked

There is a 50 year documentary on youtube (6 parts) that shows parts of this deleted scene and they said they cut this because the movie was getting too long. However, I agree with you, this scene is stupid and it's a good thing that it was cut.
christo930 2 years ago
But why?? "How long is 'too long?'"

why did they delete this! I loved it.
muppetspuppets 2 years ago 5
@muppetspuppets Because the executives felt this made the movie longer than it already was (about 2 1/2 hours long).
ApacheMan2K 1 year ago
@ApacheMan2K The longest version of the movie was just two hours long. It was cut by about 20 minutes.
