  • I love YouTube and by far, this is the best of the best!

    Pete and Arlo!!

  • great stuff......looking forward to seeing Arlo at the next Florida Folk Festival

  • Right ON Arlo !!! ... Still to this day you give us HOPE & Happiness.

  • One of my all time favourites. The story, the 'folk' tempo that Arlo gives to the song. Pete's reaction. Everything in this video is worthwhile. Thanks for sharing with us.

  • I said too much on my last post about Elvis, without giving my thanks to the person who posted this - Arlo did a fantastic job explaining how we get too wrapped sometimes on conceptions of songs and should just enjoy being together. BTW, when my wife I were married, this was the song at our wedding's first dance.

  • People don't realize the effect and influence that guy from Memphis called Elvis had on generations of performers - from Dylan, Guthrie, Lennon, Bowie, Steven Tyler, Jim Morrison and on and on and on. I thought Elvis was so square growing up - then as I started listening to Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Springsteen, The Doors, CCR etc etc, I found one common bond they all shared - they all idolized Elivs, I researched further and was blown away by Elivs' Sun Recordings from the 50's, revolutionary.

  • well fuck this guy but my last names guthrie so rock on

  • A 3 hour evening with Arlo ... is an evening of 'humungous hippie smiles' .... so glad he is still around to make us smile.

  • my favorite version of this song

  • me too with arlo...♥

  • Lovely, lovely footage.

  • Oh, goosebumps. I was at this concert, too, in the second row, and I remember watching Peter's face through the whole song. What a priviledge to have been there. And this was the first time I heard Arlo do this song. What a peak moment in life. Such good memories. And after, I went to get an autograph, gave Arlo the only thing I had to write on, which was a 20 dollar travellers check, and he signed it and handed it back, and said "Here...now it's only worth 15 bucks!"

  • i heard him sing this song for the first time as an oncore. when he started singing the hair rose up on my arms. the man is a classic forever. i went to get his autograph and i couldn't talk i was so stage struck. he calmely picked up my tshirt i had and brought out a pen and signed and stayed after the show untill everyone got his pic and autograph. the man is a class act.

  • Arlo is a great folk singer. This is a rare breed of people in today's world. Legend and always loved his music. Wish there was more willing to follow his path that he and others made.

  • What album is this on?

  • @manjar39

"More Together Again" and more recent, "In Times Like These"

  • This guy is just flat out a Great singer...jumping on his bandwagon....he is Great!

  • i love this

  • I was at this concert and it was one of the most memorable nights of my life. This song still brings tears to my eyes. Arlo at his best!

  • Arlo is playing in Dublin in a few weeks time at the concert hall and I have my tickets. Yipee!!!! I was to travel to the US with work at the same time, but no way am i leaving Dublin when Arlo is here in concert. I'm staying here to watch my all time hero. Arlo, thank you for making my life soooooo much better. I'll be the one in row f taking photos of you. Love love love....

  • love the song, love the story. The young man between Pete and Arlo is Pete's grandson; I think his name is Tao Rodriguez-Seeger.

  • Does anyone know where you can get a copy of this concert? Is it on DVD?

  • I went to an open mic night in Indianapolis, Indiana a few years back. A guy came charging out the door and nearly knocked me down.

    He said, "Excuse me!"

    I replied, "That's ok, man."

Then I remarked to the lady next to me, "That guy looked just like Arlo Guthrie!"

She said, "That WAS Arlo Guthrie!"

  • "Pete, it must be a folk song. I never heard horses sing it." Big Bill Broonzy. (Pete Seeger on the Smother's Brothers)

  • Arlo is my all time here since 1969.. Saw him in Dublin in 2009 or was it 2008? Anyway it was magic. Love you Arlo

  • he is most inspiring...

thank you for the wonderful vids..

  • This song also appears on the anthology "Sing Out For Seva" That is a very fine version, too,- almost identical. Arlo sure can tell a story!!!

  • I cant help falling in love with every train I see . Arlo is the hippies hippy. But definately not he armys arm.

  • I love this song! Arlo is the best ever.

He is so much fun to watch perform!

    Many thanks for adding this.

  • This is beautiful; really special. Thankyouthankyouthankyou

  • seen him in 77 with Shenandoah the man is brilliant in a simple and pure way truly one of Americas finest performers

love the way he does this tune the voice and guitar work is truly unique thanks Arlo and family

  • Thank You, YouTube, for allowing me to see this any time I want!

  • Amen. Arlo is the most amazing storyteller.

  • I saw him play this song at the UCLA Folk Festival around the same time. "Awesome" seems a pretty appropriate adjective.

  • I Have NEVER heard a better version of this song in my life, not even Elvis' version comes close. I Come back to listen to it all the time. And all these people coming together in song just for several minutes, it's a beautiful thing. I wish I could find a CD with this version on it.

  • It's on the "More Together Again" 2CD set.

  • I first heard this song on National Public Radio and was never able to find it elsewhere. Not only meaningful, but for a brief moment, everyone was together.

  • I would have never thought it when I clicked on it, but this is one of the sweetest versions of this song I've ever heard.

  • The Guthrie's are the first family of American folk. The DemographicNatters try to annoint Dylan, but I think the Folkslinger gets that prize.

  • Even to this day...seeing this video and hearing Arlo's version of this song puts a tear in my eyes. Still the most moving rendition of this song.... *wipes tears away*

"Thank You" to Mrs. G. for sharing this priceless video.

  • yes arlo I cant help fallling in love w/ u

your a gift to this world muahhh amy xo

  • I love his humor, When he tells a story you always have a smile.

  • .....!!!!!....

  • This is a beautiful story indeed that Arlo tells. You see I/ we were at this festival that he speaks of ,The Tonder Festival of Folk Music. And yes we did indeed know the words, all of us. It was a pleasure to hear all the old material and a natural compliment to the man, when the audience spontaneously started to sing We Shall Overcome to Pete and YES he did AGAIN demonstrate that spontaneous singing will erupt in the key of G, The Peoples Key!!. -this song is now a certified Folk Song.....

  • i wish i lived somewhere where people like arlo come. i live in a smal town of around 30,000 people and have NEVER been to a concert the closest place is denver co and thats 6 hours away =' (

  • You should come to Tonder then! Arlo, Abe, Sarah Lee and Johnny Irion is coming to be with us again at the Tonder Festival. It's a great big family gathering! You'll know what its' about when you see Pete in Madison!

If the mountain won't come to Moses as we say -

As a starter you could check the playlist 'Tonder Festival Family' on YouTube. You'll see what you have missed over the 35 years of the fesitval. But there's still some to come.

  • Thanks for that, Jackie, that was spectacular!

  • I come back often to watch this gem...

  • Im going to see him next month. Does anyone know if this song is in his current song lineup? I hope it is!

  • I 've seen the set list for two shows so far, and it hasn't shown up yet. I did post a couple, with more to come.

  • Arlo is the ultimate story teller, as good as his songs is his ability to add a funny tale..........

  • I got goosebumps as soon as he started to sing.....brilliant

  • How's that for uplifting?

I was singing this and thinking I'd like to do this with my bass, bouzouki etc. Now I'll have to put more effort into it.

  • Story telling is a special talent..

& when yer good, people will listen.

    Folk music, isn`t it Great!!

    What a great Video!!

    *****

  • Nice that there are those out there who still keep the faith. We so need them =)

  • ...indeed, my friend......

  • I hope things "will loosen up a little" in 2009.

  • beautiful wow magic to my ears thanks jguth3 for sharing this with the world!!

peace to u jguth, peace to all you who watch this, peace to all madkind it may be hard to find peace in these days of violence but its still out there to be shared by all!!!

    Zack

  • I saw Arlo and Pete at Ravina in Highland Park, IL. great concert. thank for posting this clip.

  • The girls surely made beautiful backup singers. Carry it on, carry it on.

  • I almost cried. This is incredible!

  • Well I did cry LOL,

thanks, this combines two of my favorite people ever, Elvis and Arlo...wow what a duet they could have made!

  • Man what a great storyteller and musician, u can almost make out an alices restuarantlike cadence in the story. His comic timing is perfect. How it is this man wasnt offered a variety show on network TV is beyond me(yeah I know he had a small role on a show set in Hawaii). I'm have no doubt it would be a big hit even now.God bless the Guthries. I hope his kind of music makes a comeback and the godawful singers and the bad music that dominate the charts now, become as extinct as the dinosaur.

  • I totally agree with your sentiments!!!!!!!

  • The words you speak are above and beyond what the radio pushes on the masses...this song - along with the rest of Arlo's catalog - are timeless, and need to be passed along to not only this generation, but the next generation coming up as well. This music will never die as long as there are people like Arlo to pass it along.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to find a tissue to wipe away the tears that this version of the song brings to me....

  • Amazing. Thank you for posting this.

  • When are you coming to the south. We miss you down here!

  • Any chance of seeing you all in Europe in 2009?

  • sorry, elvis, Arlo made a better version of "I just cant keep falling in love"

  • Divine perfection. Thank you for posting this!

  • One of the nicest things I've seen anywhere.

    Thank you...

  • To Kim K*****, wherever you are...this song reminds me of you. Thank you for introducing me to the wonderful music that is Arlo Guthrie way back when. I shall never forget the moments we shared. *tears*

  • Sorry to all the Elvis fans out there, but wow. This is the best version of this song I've heard. I'm an Elvis fan myself, but Arlo sounds great.

  • Oh yes, definately! I fell in love with this the first time I heard it.

  • @montycombs arlo takes songs and lifts them to another level. He succeeds in taking full advantage of music and lyrics (and storytelling) for an ultimate emotional experience.

  • Thanks so much. Beautiful lesson.

  • a wonderful meaningful tribute to both Pete and Arlo. Thanks so much.

  • I remember the concert Arlo is talking about and I love his story about the Tønder festival. Really an evening to remember.

  • Should I ever be fortunate enough to ever get married, I believe I would give anything to have Arlo play this song at the reception!

  • I, too, would give anything to have Arlo play this at my wedding also!

  • *Sniff*

  • No matter how many times I watch this, I still get tears in my eyes listening to Arlo's take on this song.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to find some kleenex...

    :')
