Because of that, we feel that if something bad happens to this metaphorical Goddess among men, who in fact did nothing wrong, is attacked (verbal or physical) by someone, we jump to her defense.
Others, like John Gosselin, are viewed as horrible, horrible people, so we see bad things as they're comeuppance and don't care as much.
So I like how you think but how about this: If we follow celebrities because we look up to them, what about the celebrities we trash? Say... Jon Gosselin? For some reason, he was a big highlight in the 2009 media, but most of it was about how we hate him? So why would we care about him so much if we don't actually care about them? Most of the media/pop culture/ entertainment news is about celebrities going into rehab/ cheating on spouse... why do we care about that if it is negative?

Well, one theory I've heard about why we care so much relates to the factor of influence. I believe I heard this during the Martha Stewart incident when people were debating about whether or not her punishment was too easy or too harsh...most people said it was too harsh and the argument was (1) she's rich and the small fines you and I would get wouldn't hard enough and (2) since she's such a large influence on people, she must be punished to prove a point.
i think its dumb that people obesess over the celebrities. they're just people like you and me. they aren't as perfect as the media shows them as. they want them to look perfect so we feel worse and buy their products because we thhink its like a magic potion that will make us prettier, etc. but everything they do is touched up. i think we should just let them be.

The only reason why I personally felt... Crushed? When the whole issue came out about the Kanye/Swift bit is that it looks badw for him, I like Taylor as a person, I like her music and I felt bad for Beyonce.

I don't agree at all. The idolatry of celebrities isn't really indicative of a healthy society, but one incapable of coping with daily pressures.
Basically, it serves as a release, a distraction, something to look at that's actually exciting.
America isn't great. There are high numbers of people losing their homes because they cannot afford health care, and really there's a lot of crime.
I think the US has... 25% of the world's incarcerated population. There are other reasons for this too.

You're probably right about why we care about what happens to famous people, but I am also interested in why we don't care as much about the horrible stuff that happens to everyone else.
I think this is becuase its easier to think of those people who are starving as an "other" and that makes it easier to not be responsible for the "other" because they are seperate. Woot for John Green and imagining peoiple more complexly. : )

In Freudian psychology people are seen as very angry beings. However their superego keeps them from expressing anger in a way that would seem inappropriate. When things like this happen (Kanye West clearly acting like a jerk), it gives people an excuse to safely release some of their anger in a way that's deemed appropriate. How many people here really care about what happens to people at the Grammies? Some but not many. However people like to use situations like this to release their emotions.

I normally don't care what celebrities do but I think Kanye has alot, and all he does is bitch & complain! It angered me more because he was not only rude, but like a crying baby! I would have liked to see him do that with a different celebrity, instead of with someone who is sweet & quiet!
