It's interesting that even as poor as the playback quality was, your TV was able to decode the closed captioning text.
I'm not a VCR expert by any means, but maybe there's a fault with the circuitry that drives the motor coils. It reminds me of a direct-drive turntable, and I know those can become erratic if there's a bad component in the motor drive circuit.
@vwestlife I'm thinking it's the Toshiba chip right next to the capstan coils.. I honestly don't think it's caps like most Betamax suffers. There's not many caps at all after that chip..
The capacitors used on the board are SMD-type and they are infamous for leaking, especially if they're THAT old.
Compounding the problem is that the leaked electrolyte is known for corroding the copper traces on the board, opening circuits vital for the motor's operation.
Repair of the capstan board means removing the old caps, cleaning up the mess, patching any damaged traces, and soldering in fresh capacitors. Do that and I guarantee the capstan will work again.
Why are you fixing a betamax? Kinda weird.
