Found this song won't go away. Just keeps running through my mind...Had the chance to catch the new movie Arthur Christmas this pass season. Yep do believe grandma got run over by a rain deer this year -- know they are now retired.
Hello Roy. I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your craft. The social commentary that your songs put forth are so very important in waking people up to their contradictory actions. I hope that one day you will be recognized alongside Guthrie, Ochs and the like for what you have contributed. It means a lot to me to see someone trying to raise attention to such crucial issues in a time where so many "artists" are nothing of the sort.
Beat Your Kids (spare the rod and spoil the child), they make better voluntary, US Military personnel and Guantanamo Bay Jailers. Hey, someone has to go around the world killing all the crazy people and their children - RIGHT - ? Oh yeah and one more thing; through mistakes in Biblical Translations, I found out that Jonah actually ate the well. >:)
Roy, all politics aside, I still love your music because you've written dozens of songs using only your voice and an acoustic guitar, and for all that they have a consistent style, they don't sound or feel exactly the same. You demonstrate vocal, instrumental, and poetic versatility in every song. Unlike a lot of current pop artists, when I see you have a new song, I actually think "Ooh, I wonder what -this one- will sound like!"
I fully support gun control and I'm against all military conflict unless its UN peacekeeping. I play military video games and, while I don't own any guns, have a geeky interest in weaponry. I enjoy these things in the fictional sense; but I abhor these tools of death in real life. But like many people, I have the mental fortitude and maturity to know what's fantasy, and what is the horrific truth of real violence and war. Unfortunately, some kids don't mature when they grow up.
Suicide rates of children in houses with guns are higher than child deaths due to break ins in houses without guns. Firearm homicide rates are 30* higher in the US than the UK for example, with the murder rate in the US being 4* that of the UK in general (kind of scary to think that 3* that number die due to lack of health insurance according to Harvard Medical School). Ease of murder is a significant factor in deciding whether to murder someone or not.
I don't like Penn and Teller* and won't accept their authority unless you're pointing me towards a peer reviewed article. Care to summarise any of their points?
*They had an episode about political correctness where they sympathised with a fascist that was later jailed.
@falconwind00 UN peacekeeping isn't peacekeeping bro. you should do some research on the many many innocent people they've killed in the name of "peace"
Better to be playing soldier than to be a real one. Plus, you gotta admit it, if you guys had Call of Duty back when you were kids you'd have played it to death too.
@soundslave Lots of people would disagree with you.
But of course, lots would agree, too!
So basically you're saying that the reason we have divided countries that fight and bicker all the time is because we have a patriarchal society led by men who are built to be aggressive and territorial?
@Topmonhit you're absolutely right. We can claim to be advanced beings, but when it comes down to it we're just chimps in clothing. Hormones and primal urges dicated our behaviour even when we don't realise it.
Patriarchy began with the agricultural revolution about 10k years ago, which is only 5% of the time that h.s.sapiens has existed. Look at some of our closest evolutionary cousins, the bonobos (look for TED talks on them), and you can get an idea of what a matriarchal culture could look like.
@Keovar I dont know where you get your facts, but I'm fairly certain humans have always been patriarchal, and in fact most apes are. Your choice of Bonobos as your example is a bit odd, as the other four great apes (gorillas, chimps, etc) are patriarchal. As for what a matriarchal society would look like, apart from the gender of the leaders, there's actually little difference in chimp versus bonobo society, except of course for their hyper-sexuality, I suppose.
Bonobos are matriarchal, and they have a high oxytocin response which is triggered by the sexuality they use for social bonding. Bonobos, like humans, have sex whether or not the female can possibly get pregnant, they kiss and have sex face-to-face. Things like leg length, their scalp hair, etc. make them more humanlike than the common chimps. There's too much to list here... Just search for bonobos on TED talks and Wikipedia or something.
Great! But I thought you were going to give playing and songwriting lessons under the rubric of the Starving Ear. Maybe I misheard, but I got my guitar all tuned up and everything!
Fantastic, as always! Hey, the UUCLC has moved to the Kelseyville Methodist Church - a great venue for a concert! Let us know when you're back in town and we'll get something set up!
The Daily Show had a moment of Zen the other day showing a lovely opportunity for parents to get a picture of their children with Santa Claus.
While the kids carried the gun of their choice.
And then they could fire the guns.
Children.
Appropriate song is appropriate.
Did I mention that the moment of Zen was showing a clip from Fox "News"? I forgot to mention it at first because it's so freaking obvious that they'd show it, wouldn't they? Kids and guns. "War on Christmas" alright.

Ever heard that all wars are created by the Rothschild Maffia, the Banking Kartel and the Big Maffia Corporations?
Peacekeeping is nothing else as Terror / Control for those Global Criminals.

Little boys have been playing with toy guns generations. It's traditional Roy. Just like girls playing with ponies and dolls.
soundslave 2 months ago
@soundslave 1. Which, of course, is rooted in societal thinking and in no way a hard, natural fact.
2. My Little Pony + Internet = Wait what.
Of course the internet (and nature) are in no way traditional.
