you are a disgrace to your country! the flag is fine..except the sun showing the illuminated ones are here and in control lmfao! a 5 year old could do a better job on a new flag! sticking triangles for mountains screams illuminati..i know we are all under there control but seriously stop using there symbols! i agree mountain should be on the flag and a small sun in the corner somewhere..and the union jack for you who have no clue! where do you think the people came from ..we are tied to them!
Yes I'm a detractor who also objects to the change from the Red Ensign to the Maple Leaf. But not just because that change was part of an agenda against our country's profound British foundations – the Maple Leaf Flag was also an exercise in minimalist abstraction. It looks like a corporate logo too! It reminds me of the company logo for Nabisco, the breakfast cereal maker.
I think that I trust drunk Anglophile loggers at a pub more than a bland, correct, graphic designer's mindset for a flag.
This is interesting, but I think that your design looks more like a gov't logo than a flag. Now that you have described our flag as the product of four rounds by colonial clerks at a pub, I like it even more. Better for it to be a busy, glorious, archaic mess than a slick, corporate-looking logo. And you are being disingenuous about “keeping the idea of British heritage.” There is no obvious trace left of the Union Jack or the crown although our law, language and head of state come from Britain.
Thanks for a thoughtful comment. Actually, I agree. Something seems to go slightly off-topic once the mountains are added, and I'm inclined to think that I should remove them, and retain only the setting sun behind the wavy sea. Watch this space.
All I can say is good on you for trying. I respect what you are trying to do, but I think your flag falls flat. It is boring and lacks the class that the true flag has.
I'll admit I was skeptical from the beginning because I am quite attached to the real flag, but I did get excited when your design started to take shape.
I think I would try to at least maintain the colours of the original, or change it completely.
Interesting idea -- British Columbians certainly have more in common with people in Washington state and Oregon than with Alberta, for example -- but that's a whole other discussion. What I'm proposing doesn't require secession from Canada or the US...
@therealqualum who said secession? I say just rename BC Cascadia.
your flag is good, I will give it proper consideration, frist I have to discuss with my soul mate.
I was thinking of doing something like this with the Bermuda flag too, if Bermuda joins Canada which it should, along with St. Pierre and M, Alaska, and Greenland.
@KangaKucha "we would offer them a better life than the UK can."
We can? How? They already have a per capita income income 50% higher than the United States. What has ANYONE got to offer Bermuda that would "offer them a better life"?
@PatchesRips then they would be an enclave of that country, with Canada they at least connect. Try drawing a line from Canada to Bermuda, and then from UK to Bermuda, what takes up least space?
so you think they should join the USA? well thats a debate worth having...
@KangaKucha "so you think they should join the USA?"
No. But hey, try drawing a line from Canada to Bermuda, and then from Virginia to Bermuda. Did you know that Bermuda used to be PART of Virginia at one time?
They already are an "enclave" of a country; Britain. That seems to suit them fine. Again, I don't see a single advantage to their joining Canada that they don't already enjoy in their current arrangements. Shorter lines on maps notwithstanding.
@PatchesRips I'll have to check that on wikipedia.
and islands territory only extends for like 5 miles around the island themseleves. imho that needs to be redefined. I hope that clear that up, sorry mate, been busy trying to find a job and kinda lost the plot there.
If Canadians had outgrown the Red Ensign and Union Jack what makes it okay to demand that it should still represent British Columbians? Is our west coast, isolated culture and society so Third World that we have to lean on a foreign power to give us our name, flag and source of "identity." What does that teach our kids about Canada? We are semantically fucked. As well as have a complete ambivalence and ignorance to us and to the currents of world history.
1. I am an ex-Brit myself, and far from wanting to deny British heritage, watch with dismay at how many Canadians are happy to erase any distinctions between themselves and Americans in their accent, spelling and mindset. (See Scots on how to preserve a distinctive identity while living next to a powerful neighbour)
2. What I object to is bad design, not the Union Jack.
3. If this proposal is so objectionable, do its detractors also object to the Maple Leaf?
@therealqualum "If this proposal is so objectionable, do its detractors also object to the Maple Leaf?"
Look around on YouTube sometime... you'll be amazed. I recommend searching on "The Maple Leaf Forever". Watch how often the Red Ensign pops up. Oh, hey, there it is, right there in the "Suggestions" list on the right... speak of the devil.
It's a little grandiose and heavy handed to think that our history should be seen and felt by all on a daily basis. That fanatic attitude ventures into a totalitarian type gaurdianship of the past at that represses authentic homegrown symbols and ideologies. Our little corner of the world and its historty will not be destroyed if a flag discussion opened. it's healthy that colonial symbols and their message should be questioned in the 21st century.
When was the last time you read "British Empire" stated in the local news, or overheard in a conversation in any city here? probably not in about 80 years. most of us have moved on. it's called change and progress, why don't we deserve a name and symbols based on our own myth and progress? we are NOT british. our flag represents nothing about us. Our roots are merely a textbook fact and among other great things here, our roots are evident in the great language we speak.
Monarchists and loyalists here in BC are so juvinile and so out of touch with Canada & BC and the British history they defend so vehemently and exhalt and worship to a cult-like fettish. why is Britains history more important than ours? no grace at all, it's embarrasing. we have the most unique bio-region in the world and we throw it away to a former empire whose motto behind our flag was "the sun never sets on the british empire."
The flag is based on British Columbia's Coat of Arms. I really think its a great flag so not sure why you would change it? Also why is everyone against our British heritage these days? Seems like its fashionable to remove any connection we have with them and encourage every other race in the country to promote themselves. I am not ashamed of the Union Jack or the Crown I swore allegiance too. They are as much a part of Canada as any other symbol.
i like our flag, and i respect our heritage, new flags are insulting. updating or changing is different, but totally scrapping it is called throwing away our heritage.
First 15 Seconds, Why does it have a British Flag? Are you thick? It's in the name BRITISH COLUMBIA. Furthermore yes, it was British, and if you're Canadian, you just so happen to be a a subject of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and therefore are a British Subject you dolt.
I was talking about BC flag, it looks like a painting of 5 years old, your is a little bit better, but still, flag doesn't have to be a picture. Canadian flag on the other side is very well looking.
You're talking to a British expat and former Londoner who mourns Victorians' lack of appreciation for old buildings and solid construction of his old town.
I love the maple leaf flag. I don't want my country mistaken for England, nor do I want England controlling me. In Canada we're a vibrant mix of languages, religions and colours; within that tapesrry, there's a place to aknowledge our monarchial heritage. I don't like all tradition thrown out at the expense of political correctness. Certainly taking the Union Jack off the provincial flag would not make my life better.
My point exactly about the vibrant mix and not wanting to be mistaken for the UK. There's certainly room for keeping a small Union Jack somewhere, as they do in Australia and NZ. I'll add that to the variations. It's for that kind of constructive criticism that I put this out there.
While we're at it, let's drop 'British' from British Columbia, change Victoria to Ville du Juan de Fuca, drop our Westminster parliament in exchange for a House of Representatives, change our Common Law to Droit Civil.....there, happy now?
What an asinine idea; a new flag....
Nothing says British Columbia like our flag: unique, beautiful, lots of heritage and tradition. Hopefully ideas like yours end up where they belong. In the garbage!
Still as cluttered as the current one. It doesn't look like a sun any more. I think you had something going at 1:25, then you lost it. And red, white, blue and gold have always been associated with BC. You gotta put the red back in. It just doesn't say BC without it.
I had to watch it again to see what it's like at the 1:25. I agree that the element I'm least happy with is the mountains. It may well be that we can do without them. But if red is so integral to BC, why does it not appear in any of the BC logos?
At least we have a discussion going. That way, we're more likely to get something truly worthwhile.

WE ARE POORER THAN THEY ARE, MAN FOR MAN. You might as well suggest they join Zimbabwe.
"the dollar in Bermuda is linked to the US Dollar, how dod that work out for you recenlty?"
Well, I don't live in Bermuda, so it doesn't affect me. But since they buy most of what they need from the US, it probably suits them just fine.

the Maple Leaf.
sigh. It was imposed on Canada without a referendum by a grubby government.
But its symbols stand true to the same concept as the traditional flag of the Dominion: the variations of the Red Ensign.
I apologise so many of my countrymen are errant asses.
