Fuck what they say, LEVEL 42 are fantastic! I love 'em and they're music is only music musicians dream of playing. Imagine Coldplay trying to play real music! No can do! LEVEL 42 LEVEL 42 LEVEL 42 LEVEL 42 LEVEL 42 LEVEL 42 LEVEL 42 LEVEL 42 LEVEL 42!
now can anyone out there help me find a song ? all i remember is it could have been by level 42 i am not really sure , and from what i remember of this song is that the music video was set in type of motel with one of the numbers on the door was 223 and the song and video was from the eighties thats all i know can't remember anything more , but its driving me crazy i can't remember it at all
Maybe its because Alan came into Level 42 late in the game for this album, but its a shame that he hardly plays. One of the greatest guitarists in the world and they barely gave him a nod...WTF?
@littlenige You hit the nail on the head. Every time I see an amazing bass player i think to myself, Mark King can do that AND sing at the same time... and do both at a high level. After seeing different live performances of the same song - you can see that he's not just on autopilot, every performance is unique. How this is physically & mentally possible is something I'm still trying to figure out. Les Claypool comes close, but he's on a whole different uh... level.
I love L42 and MK etc etc so please don't take this as a flame (since I don't like comparing who's best etc etc), but because he can sing and play bass at the same time doesn't mean anything. Most musicians who sing as well can do both (Sting, Elton John etc etc).
What blows my mind about MK is that actually he is a multi-instrumentalist and TOOK UP the bass whilst IN L42 !!!!! The original band had 3 drummers (MK, PG, ML) and apparently ML is the 'best' of the lot !
Looks a good bit like Kylie (on the left, in pink), but I think you'll find it's the professional backing singer Tessa Niles- she worked with loads of top class acts in the '80s- all the backing vocals on ABC's Lexicon of Love, work with Sting, Clapton, Elton John.
Look at Alan Murphy. He was the only one on that stage that knew of his illness. Look at his face at 3:35. Mark King had just shouted Alan's name out, in the Albert Hall, probably the biggest pop event going on at that time. I wonder what was going through his head at that time.
love level 42 am going to see them in Portsmouth Guildhall in october and cant wait, grew up with them and still listen to them now, keep it up lads your still awesome
When people discuss whether he is/was the greatest bass player in the world, most people forget that what (for me) does put him above the rest, is that he can sing counterpoint at the SAME TIME...........now that's talent. Mark you still ROCK!! Mind you I grew up in Cowes too so I'm probably biaised!!
@mgzt190plus True! My sister was in the same year as him in Cowes High School - it was well known that he was a great drummer before he picked the bass up. I went to his family home in Cowes and his Mum showed me the multitude of scrap books she had collected of all the press cuttings about Mark and the band.....great days indeed!
@littlenige I am so jealous! I went over to the IOW back in 1990/91 I think. And stood outside the massive mansion he had with a recording studio on the side, Got a load of pics that I still have annd cherish lol.
@littlenige Yes that one I did know. It came out in a celeb challange show on TV he took part in many years ago. One of the challanges was to drive a milk float and the presenter informed us MK was a milkman for a while lol
@littlenige: Totally agree. As insane as some of Mark's stuff is to play, it takes on a whole other dimension when you add in the vocals. Sometimes the bass and vocal rhythms are completely at odds with each other - yet he pulls it off effortlessly every time. I've long considered Mark King to be in the same league as Chris Squire of Yes in that respect. Monster bassist to look at and listen to, yet you don't get the full measure of his complexity til you try to play it yourself
@Villagejonesy He died in October '89 from aids related pneumonia. I think you can see the beginnings of his illness here. It was a great shock to everyone because he told no one of his illness. So many other great talents lost to this dreadful illness. RIP Freddie Mercury & Kenny Everett
@generalravon Thanks generalravon, well what a shame. Freddie Mercury was a huge one, of course. Well I am glad that the band is carrying on. Rest in Peace Alan Murphy, and keep on going Level 42.
Did anyone catch the change in the lyrics near the beginning of the song... something about "yes I know about, yes I know about that" That is completely different from the album.. I also have done lyric searches and cannot find the words to this live version.. Any ideas? : )
Murph was a monster man!!! A superb musician. The first time I saw him play live he was in a pub in London in the early 80's with band playing Larry Carltons Room 335!! From Kate Bush, Go West, Mike and the Mechanics, Level 42 and countless others ...god bless ya man!!!
I love Murphy's style - so relaxed. No posturing, or white-man's-overbite or histrionics. Sadly his illness is starting to show here but he always looked so composed and cool on stage (even if he looks a teeny bit awkward in the Big Sky vid). A great loss. Wish I'd seen him live. I assume you are talking about the Cricketers at the Oval?
Hi Shoyumame. Alan played a number of guitars from Japanese strats loaded with floyds or kahlers to Aria RS Esprits. The guitar featured in the vid is a Yamaha MSG Deluxe (designed by the now legendary Martyn Booth)
Possibly the most musical, talented and unique guitarist for many a year - A sad, sad loss.
No problem. With Kate Bush and other early stuff he used Boogies, sometimes with a Session power amp in stereo (with a delay in between. Most of the Go West music was played via Fender Super Champs (18watt units originally designed by Paul Rivera who moved from Mesa Boogie to Fender) Best information is in Guitarist May 1986.
This is great stuff. Plus with Alan Murphy, they should put this in a DVD if they haven't already. Looks like a most excellent performance by the band.
Their is no one who can sing so well and play such complicated bass lines.I do feel ,thou he was not the first to slap the bass ,he has a style all his own. Love that alembic as well !
Only mark the best of this combo! Fack off, Gary Husband superb drummer! Mike lindup great keyboard player and singer, Alan Murphy great guitarist! fantastic combo and so tight!
That's one bold statement (and I am a big MK fan). Although one thing is for certain, who else can play like this AND sing so well at the same time!?!
Who else can play like this and sing so well? Jermaine Jackson when he was a teenager. Mark is awesome, but there are so many bass players who were doing this stuff long before him. Louis Johnson for one. Check out Victor Wooten for monster bass playing.

Thank you retroglide2000 for your very fast reply. Then it must have been Jakko Jakszyk as I'm sure it was not Mr. Holdsworth. May Alan Murphy rest in peace.
Hi amandaLe4V2eL. Thanks so much for posting this. Do you also have Man from that tour? Saw the Band in Denmark in 1991 in a special concert which I believe was some time after ending the Starring At The Sun Tour. Gary was on the drums but I can't remember if Alan still was. Does anyone of you know?
Think pop bands in general, not level 42 specific, nowadays pop is mainly a product, a collective effort of investors, producers, writers, studio musicians, sound engeneers, computers, stylists, pr-people and hair dressers.
and they will be in October again ... ( yes theres a few different members .. but Mike, Mark and Gary are still a part of it .. Sean Freeman is one killer Sax player and Nathan King is amazing on the guitar!! )
as time moves on i spose the music moves on the last concert i recently went 2 was the stylistics they wr great.but coming on here seeing these guys brings it all back oh for the 80s lol.
Gary Husband,Alan Murphy... shame they didn't form a fusion band.

Does anyone of you know?
gloggolyt 3 years ago
Hi Gloggolyt, Alan sadly died shortly after this show from AIDS.
It would be either Allan Holdsworth or Jakko Jakszyk on guitar with Level 42 in 1991 - hope this helps!

It's a BIG shame that they are only playing mainly in the U.K. during the later part of 2008. I feel for you guys across the pond

Great tune from back in the day when they could actually still write, play and sing by themselves.

???
They still write, sing and play themselves!!!
amandaLe4V2eL 3 years ago
Think pop bands in general, not level 42 specific, nowadays pop is mainly a product, a collective effort of investors, producers, writers, studio musicians, sound engeneers, computers, stylists, pr-people and hair dressers.
koenraad72 3 years ago
and they will be in October again ... ( yes theres a few different members .. but Mike, Mark and Gary are still a part of it .. Sean Freeman is one killer Sax player and Nathan King is amazing on the guitar!! )
