you are correct. not to mention all diff ways to play phrase.. right now i am sticking with the 5 as they are a mouthful enough.. one challange is to be able to start mode one and go UP the neck through the next 4 (or6) and then play the modes BEHIND the first mode with the open strings. whew.. liek when you start in F and you start mode one way up the neck you can fine more BELOW it..like a circle. takes a lot of practice!!
@shakedown04092 if you are playing with feeling and soul you don't give modes much thought. You just play what you want to say and forget about boundaries and patterns, it maybe good to just know what they are in general so you can BS talk with other musicians, but a real free feeling solo comes from here (pointing to chest) I have a feeling this kid listens to a lot of Trey / Jerome Garcia noodling & doesnt care much about the theory behind it. Theory is for people who dont get it or feel it
@Halliday7895 who said anything about any of that? I was just pointing something out. And I do believe its important to know your modes. Is it the "be all/end all"? Of course not - but I never implied that to begin with.
I've been playing for 10 years, and listened to phish for about 9 of them. I never had any idea what trey was doing. I started off playing blues and learned SRV up and down. I finally decided to figure out mixolydian. It's crazy. I haven't had a musical breakthrough for around 8 years. As soon as I found mixolydian I was blown away and had a music revelation. I love when that happens. :) It's a great sound. You play great. I'll be using your vids for inspiration. Thanks for posting
mixalydian is only one mode of the major scale. so to say you are in mixalydion suggests that you are playing on off of the same fret in that respective key. this is often confused so im just trying to help. it would be the Key you are in using g ALL 5 modes of the major scale.. dorian phrigian etc (sp)...not JUST mixolyd
yeah, I get all the modes kinda. I took music theory in college, but it never really stuck with me because all I wanted to do is jam on blues stuff. but now I'm going back to the theory and really looking at it, and all the modes. It's very interesting trying to mix all of them together and coming up with new and different sounds.
Great Job man!Did u go to the Went? It was my first show, and what a blast it was. I Always say that the GW had a certain feel/groove/sound/something? Listen to the Halleys Comet Jam, DWD jam,BATHTUB Gin(especially)Makisupa,SIMPLE,Cities.....the list goes on and on.I just get this GW feeling when I listen to it on CD, the number one GW sound for me is the cool little part of the Halleys jam...when it gets real quiet and Trey/Page are playing a real nice little groove. Love it.Cheers.
ha, unfortunately the Went was just before my time (started listening to phish in 1998). i wouldve been 13 at the time of the GW anyway, so i probably wouldnt have made it :(
for technique, just listen to a ton of phish everyday for like 10 years. for equipment, im using a small 12W fender amp, but i also always use my trusty Boss compression sustainer and a Ibanez tube screamer (the new kind, unmodified).
The happy b-day was a little cheesy...does it have any meaning that I'm not aware of? I like your vids, and you're an excellent guitar player though. Play what makes you happy
haha i bet u do the same thing i do man. I will put phish songs on repeat and jam to them with my guitar. I as well have a lot of trey influence in my playing. Lately I've been jamming harry hood from 10-21-95 and Limb by Limb from 4-4-98! Try those out if you got either of them.

There are actually 7 modes of the major scale, not 5 =
I - Ionian (major)
ii - Dorian (minor)
iii - Phrygian (minor)
IV - Lydian (major)
V - Mixolydian (major)
vi - Aeolian (minor)
vii - Locrian (diminished)
