  • LAN Party!

  • I have wifi at home

  • My iphone won't do that!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Beside AT&T It'll show an E for edge, 3G for 3G and like a weird radio signal thing for Wifi.

  • Can you get good wifi services in most places or fewer places than others?

  • HI-FI TO WI-FI TO WIMAX...That's Tech

  • the wifi is free??

the internet in iphone is free??

  • the wifi is free... EDGE is not free. Iphone has two ways... WIFI and EDGE. WIFI is same as wireless internet, such as laptop wireless.

  • the new iphone 3g uses 3g too....and wfi along with edge

  • so edge is what you pay for monthly to browse??? and the wifi is free correct??

  • edge and 3g is what you pay for..... wifi is free, depending on if you're using an establishments wifi connection

  • I just stumbled across this video, now I'm wondering what exactly you're trying to demonstrate?

I don't think anyone would have thought the EDGE network would be faster than Wifi....

Thats like comparing dial-up with highspeed.

  • Haha, you wouldn't believe the amount of idiots I've heard claiming that 3G is the fastest thing right now. One even claimed that 3G made the iPhone run faster, can you believe it?

  • wifi is faster then EDGE

  • Your point beeing?

  • you think?

  • itouches are dirt

actually there cool but iphone is way better.

i have an itouch and im gettin an iphone but ill prolly sell my itouch or keep it and be like what son i got bof of em i keep it real you know what im saying

  • you're a freakin cocky ass bastard who is spoiled as fuck.fuckin show off, learn to manage the $,you know what I'm saying faggot?

  • yo when does the 3gb come out in u.s

  • Its been out if you talking about 3g phone sometime in june idk what date i been hearing diff dates

  • june 11th, confirmed by apple. go check out the site.

  • No its not its july 11

  • oops lol

  • june 11th.

  • july fagget

  • faggot*

  • guys its a fuckin fone not a supercomputer, my itouch works better without wifi

  • It's a phone, who needs to use the web THAT bad on their phone. Not to mention the fact that in popular areas it's hard not to find a wifi spot to connect to. At least that's the way it is here. If I didn't have wifi in my apartment, there's still about 10 places I could connect to around me.

They aren't using 3G because of it's enormous power consumption. I'd rather have slower internet with 8 hours of battery life then 3G and 2-3 hours of battery life.

  • Excuses excuses, the entire pitch of the iPhone is the fact it is an internet device. So point out that it is slow as shit on it is perfectly valid.

What's more the whole "3G uses enormous power" is bull. I don't recall seeing people in Europe walking around with nuclear power station strapped to their phones. 3G is not as draining as Apple claim it to be, in fact when in passive mode it uses LESS power.

  • Whatever you say dude...

  • It does drain the battery

  • Actually, 3G is MORE efficient in passive mode, but uses more power when in use. Like I said, most phones in Europe are 3G anyway and they work just fine.

  • Thats true about the 3G eating up battery they are trying to fix it and the new iphone that comes out they say it will least 5-6 hours talk time or internet

  • iphone biggest downfall is EDGE... and no AIM built-in... hopefully next damn 3G iphone change all that... i still love my crackberry 8320

  • I have a question when I use my iphone around places I found a couple of wi-fi networks called 2WIRE(NUMBER HERE ) what does it mean?

  • thats like a personal internet connection

its like a box that can be used like a wifi hotspot

bt the only thing is some of them have passwords and u have to look under the 2wirebox to know the password

  • Opera mini helps alot

  • How can i connect to internet i really dont understand this wifi thing...

  • wifi is just wirless internet so if you are at a wifi hot spot its going to be faster then edge.

  • whats the difference ...what do i must have that i can use wifi or edge cause neither of them dont work on my iphone

  • thats weird

  • if you have wireless broadband in yourhome, just add your phone;s MAC-adress to your broadband modem wireless list.

  • ....

    edge isnt that slow

and every place i go virtually has wifi..

    whatever :D

  • Why are you all defensive?

  • lol

    im not defensive??

  • Yes it is. I have used Edge and EVDO, and let me tell you, the difference between dialup-like edge speeds and dsl-like evdo rev A speeds is very noticable.

  • it depends where you live, if you live in hickville then it will be slower than if you live in a major city

  • Does anyone know whenthe 3g iphone is coming to the public

  • yes, the 2nd generation iPhone is expected to come in fiscal 2008. It is expected to have iChat features and 3G connectivity.

  • you would have to be desperate (or uber bored) to use the Edge service for anything but phoning and texting.

if you have to carry a phone around, well it's better than nothing i guess. but come on apple, you can do better.

  • Well I must say, it's way better than fast internet on a regular mobile phone.

I've got an iPhone with edge and I will buy the 3G one too:D

  • the google wifi is a wifi network, you would have to be near him to connect to it, so yes its a connection under wifi settings

  • How do you get the Google Wifi connection? Does it have to be downloaded on the iphone browser or do you just search for a connection under the Wifi setting? PLEASE REPLY!!

  • iphone = *****

  • Cool, but slooooow...

  • left one looks more bigger...?

  • ............"More Bigger"? rofl.

  • hehehe my phone only has 3hours of talk time and thats when it's fully charged :(

  • they don't want iphone users to use the edge network and plus a 3g iphone's commin out soon

  • is the 3g iphone going to come out in the US or is it just for Europe and Asia

  • i know it'll be in the US and Europe but i'm not sure about asia

  • i agree there is little difference between edge and wifi where I live I guess im lucky

  • wish i could liv in mountain view. I need free wifi.

  • OMG how could you afford 2 iphones. Crazy Im jelous

  • y did at&t not use the 3g network for the iphone??? why the edge network???

  • that would force me into insanity

  • Yea, not putting 3G in the iphone was smart. (sarcasm)

  • The thing has a great big brightly lit touch screen, and not a conventional one i might add.

Adding 3G into the mix would give you a battery life of about 5 hours.

It's a trade off that i'm not all that fussed about to be honest. Wifi is faster anyway.

  • dang that google campus wifi even seems slow. sorry googlerz.

  • slow and steady win the race

  • bay are@

  • you have to appreciate the fact that you can look at the internet anywhere you go

  • Baaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeaaaaaaaa rulez.

  • The point is the technology that make it possible to catch the home internet connection, instead of a slow edge expensive connection.

This is the first real palm internet connection.

The only barrier is the size of the sd memory. for now...

  • I don't get the point of this. Everyone knows that WiFi is going to be much, much faster than EDGE. This is nothing new.

  • Wifi could use a decade of development, and it could use it most from open groups.

  • Yes, we all know EDGE is slow. But mainly Steve Jobs wanted us to use it for a quick google maps search and maybe to check email. I rarely use EDGE on my Cingular 8525. Just keep in mind that EDGE is used on the iPhone mostly for updates on stocks, weather, etc.

  • If it was meant specifically for those things then it wouldn't be able to load every other web page on the internet. They marketed for people to surf and the quote you refer to is just a weak justification for a slow speed.

  • EDGE sucks. haha.

  • Thx for the comparison!

  • that's a sign that the iPhone desperately needs HSDPA cat.6.

or even HSUPA. hopefully at&t will finally realise the need for this stuff.

oh at&t seriously needs video calling too and not just video sharing.

  • dial up on pills

  • i couldnt handle waiting this long for either of the loads

  • Can you do another side-by-side making an AT&T call vs. Skype call on wi-fi? :)

Thanks for this video. Great empirical data. -TexasMax (of dropped iPhone vdo infamy)

  • oh ok, thanks for showing the links u can can access, i wasn't actually sure if u could ONLY view web pages, or if un could click on links on the webpage

  • Thanks for the video. I love my iPhone EDGE or wi-fi. I know which sites to surf on EDGE, so it's okay.

  • ya wifi is faster but also u were going to other pages on the wifi even when it wasnt done. you could have done the same on the edge. this made it appear that it is faster than it really is. But all in all wifi is much faster

  • Wow, edge sucks balls, thank God it also has Wifi. Still love the iPhone though, can't wait for the 3G version to hit Europe.

  • I would give it five stars, but there's no Viking. Next time, more Viking.

  • Good job

  • nice comparison~!

  • nice thanks for the info

  • Good video.

Hope for a 3G in Europe this fall :)

  • You're not the only one. If Apple even think about bringing a non-3G version to Europe they may as well not even bother coming.

  • my bro has the 8525 and still takes sooooooo long to load, we probably dont have 3G where we live but tahts just means taht only in vcertain areas there will be 3g coveerage

  • its not that bad (edge) if it would take a few minutes then there would be a prob

  • On any network wi-fi will always be faster. Less distance for the signal to travel.

  • hmm that's strange, I thought the speed of light could travel distances really fast... (obviously distance is not the issue)

  • LoL, so true

  • If distance was not an issue there would be no need for mulitple cell phone towers. And one wifi stop would cover and entire city. Distance is an issue.

  • Would cover "and" entire city? Anyway, distance is still not an issue, multiple cell towers are for coverage and signal strength.

  • Now why would they need strong signal strenth, hmm maybe because the closer you are to the source the stronger the strength will be and the faster you will be able to download and upload data.

  • You really don't know anything about about this subject do you. How about reading a book, or Wikipedia, or asking someone smarter than you (anyone). I'll make it easy for you. Download speed is a function of bandwidth, not distance. It's all the speed of light genius.

  • Nice... that was a good comparision..

I think I would get mad at browsing with EDGE on iPhone... I wish iPhone loaded the page as it is downloaded (like most other smartphones).... right now, it only loads the page after 100% download... that makes EDGE suck even further.... :-(

    pal :)

  • it looks like most of the time spent loading the page on edge was spent connecting to edge. My current smart phone does this - it spends ages loading the first page while it connects to edge. You can see that once the progress bar starts to move accross the speed isn't *that* bad (although it obviously isn't broadband either).

  • I guess a side by side comparison really puts things into perspective.
