THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS. *YES I'M SCREAMING* Thanks to my uncle I love Switch. Oh...this brings back memories: me as a kid riding in the backseat, listening to my my unk (a mechanic) get his falsetto on!!! Now, as an adult when I'm riding, listening to Switch I KNOW I'm part of the band. Can't tell me nothing! ooohhhweee memories Thank you again. :D
it hurts to watch this, knowing what happened to him and his family, gone to soon, it crazy rapper and rock stars try to make drugs cool, they will never be cool in my book
This family went through so much.... my prayers go out to them, and hopefully the healing continues.... I am grateful for the music they shared with music lovers around the globe. RIP Bobby...
@sexy8938 He went to prison on a drug charge and shortly after his release he passed away from complications from Aids, likely contracted from intravenous drug use. There's a sad history with this family and drug use. Check out the DeBarge documentary here on YT.
switch and bobby debarge r 4-ever, bobby will always be the greatest falsetto voice ever, R.I.P. bobby, u r always missed and always love by many. 11-21-11
Now that I know the story, I feel SO BAD for Bobby. Damn, I didn't know he endured all that abuse from his father....which resulted in his drug habit....which resulted in his death.
Switch made music that will last forever...this will never go out of style... they coulda used some dancing lessons!lol hahaha but this my group of all times...Thanks for the video.
I use to try to mimick his falsetto back in the day, lol !! Omg! that was my J'aaam
at 5:06 "I Wanna Be Closer" Ouuuuu just gives me goose pimples...that boy was badd as hell yall !! and "There'll Never Be" another Bobby Debarge.....R.I.P.
In Mama DeBarge's book "The Kept Ones", SHE states that Bobby didn't know how he caught AIDS. He said that it could have been drug use, sharing needles, or an overly promiscuous sex life some of which INCLUDED OTHER MEN!!! When I read that, I became SHOCKED!!!
@rosamaryful Bunny Debarge stated that their father sexually and physically abused most of them as children, so perhaps Bobby's promiscuity was the result from that.
My favorite song of ALL TIME! I had no idea this video existed! You made my YEAR with this. Thanks so much! Bobby will always be the man - He can hit notes only dogs can hear and still be ALL MAN!
You have to be m.f. ing kidding me that this classic song only has 192,809 views and theres garbage ass, so called artist like justin beiber, lady gag gag, lil wayne,t-pain,souljah boy and other talentless clowns in pop,r&b, & rap have millions of views. that just tells me how twisted the damn world is. What happened to real talent like this? people who can actually sing. people who can actually play instruments. It's all about image, fuck talent huh? that's why i keep it old school forever.
SuperSoulSeeker, I agree with you I love both El and Bobby , but Bobby was phenomenol and he was the beginning of all those beautiful DeBarge brothers.
Wow...every time I hear this song and "I Call Your Name"...it brings me right back to my silly, giggly, teenaged years and the sheer mind blowing reaction we all had when we first heard him sing! I can't believe he's gone. 2 weeks before my 2 and last child was born. Wow. I have to wonder if his death (from AIDS) came from his 5 year stint in prison...or had it going in but having been not been treated and died soon after release. We truly miss and love you for all the love and joy you bring!
@mslegacy01 there is an "unsung" episode here on utube about the debarge family. In it Bobby's sister says Bobby got infected w/ HIV from shooting up w/ heroin (sharing needles). The debarge household was one in which daddy debarge beat the mom & abused the kids physically, verbally and sexually. All of the kids except El had substance abuse problems as adults.
El's tenor voice is softer and more refined but in no way can El touch Bobby's highs in falsetto, listen to you and i (the end in particular), el even said his brother was the best.....case in point the ascending high note in the end of the DeBarge song "queen of my heart" that was BOBBY hitting the high note NOT El, if you know the differences in their voices u can instantly recognize
@1234tric He certainly was a talented man i hope he really knew just how exceptionally gifted he was with music, that boy was a phenomenol gift from god and he was a beautiful man. 11-21-11.
@rivotte1822 As funny as it seems, sometimes the gifted are the last to know, or should I say are the last to appreciate their gift., and they even may take it for granted until it's to late. I still think music listeners- myself include didn't understand this man' s greatness as a singer, and therefore didn't support him as we/ I should, and I hope music listeners will forgive me for that.
@rivotte1822 I as a music listener who had not listened to Bobby's beautiful voice since the late 1970's to the early 1980's, but as I rediscovered this beautiful man's gift recently , he is so loved and appreciated by us and even younger listeners as well, my brother you are forgiven by me - "You and I" love the beauty of his vocal ability continue to listen to all his music with Switch, Debarge and his solo efforts. 11-23-11.
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!! THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL SONG, AND BOBBY Debarge was SUPA DUPA CUTE!!! THIS SONG MAKES YOU FEEL ALL gooie inside... LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT AND HIM!!!!!!!!
This is pure classic soul. This is the way real men look. Mature and classy as opposed to running around the stage with tats and pants off their asses.
sooo sad.....but Legends All have a story.....THere'll Never Be......ironic...Much love and heartsent prayers to the DEBARGE family...btw...black+white=puerto rican!!! They were a pretty family (and hooooood!!!)
That was Bobby DeBarge with Switch, not the DeBarges. The DeBarge siblings had a rough childhood due to the abuse of their Father who was White and who abused Bobby more than the others. And that lead to all of them, except for El, getting on drugs and missing rehearsals. So Motown focused on El and made him the main star of the group. El eventually went solo and when his solo career wasn't as big of a success as El hoped for, he started getting into trouble and doing drugs as well.
Wow O_o you know what? I feel so good right now just sitting here listening to this sweet, melodic, soulful vibe. Bobby's voice will knock you out in a split second. That sweet high falsetto voice is enough to make you yearn for more. <3 I'm loving this performance and seeing Bobby's face makes you feel like he's still around. RIP Bobby DeBarge <3 you are deeply missed
I love Switch. Their harmonizing was the truth. Can't say enough about Bobby. He was simply gorgeous, and that voice! He could sing your panties right off.
I enjoy watching Tommy sway to the groove as he plucks that funky bass. As for Bobby...there are no words to describe his remarkable talent and that gorgeous face. He is greatly missed.
I REMEMBER THIS SONG, PLAYING ALL OVER THE AIRWAVES IN G.R. WKWM 1140? I COULD BE WRONG, ALL I KNOW IS I WAS IN LOVE WITH A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG LADY AT THAT TIME, AND WHEN I HEAR SWITCH SONGS, I REMEMBER HER, THE SMELL IN THE AIR, AN THE PLACE I WAS AT THAT TIME THANKS "SWITCH" G.R. BORN AND RAISED LOGAN ST.
@schuylerbshelton I'm sorry but you are wrong. El could only shadow and NEVER reach Bobby and I am dead serious. Taking nothing away from El of course. I am inclined to call you crazy... However, this is just one man's opinion.
@ElsTheFuture Actually I can tell easyily. As soon as he starts singing the first verse, you can tell there's 2 voices being heard, his natural live voice and the recorded track.
@afrosensuous - You have to admit...He still sounds good...right. Well, we all know he can sing and I haven't seen much footage of Switch performing so I really enjoyed this...background track an all. Peace!
@afrosensuous ,BECAUSE IT WAS A t.v. SHOW,Soultrain.AMERICAN BANDSTAND.and this show The Midnight Special, because of the logistics, they were all taped.
Bobby was actually more talented than El- believe it or not.
The whole DeBarge family- their dad was nothing nice at all, had a very rough upbringing & continue to fight demons because of it although Bunny seems to have gotten past hers.
OMG!!!! This is such a SONG for me back in the 80's...................OMG!!! Memories......no more music like this, Shalamar, Atlantic Star, Debarge......I can't stop with those bands from the 80's that JAMMED like this.....and only like this!!!
I love this song so much!!! I have search and searched for it. I thought this was El Debarge singing, now realize it's his older brother the late Bobby. Truly an all time favorite of mine that I can listen to over and over!
Since Bobby's brother El made a comeback, he has not only re- introduced me to the brilliant work that he did with Debarge but now I'm a fan of Switch...I never got to here this stuff first time around. Love this and I call Your name especially.. I hope El gets it together and keeps the Switch legacy alive..
Rainier Beach high is where this group takes me back to. I was singin their songs everyday with my friends, especially when i was in love which was about every month.
@MrMonsterkaraoke I was surprised to learn that president Harding's grandfather was from Jamaica. He had so many really good scandals going on that even though the press knew they couldn't jump on that one...it wasn't the worse one. Lol
The DeBarge family is a perfect example of 'everything that glitters ain't Gold'
While we sat at home listening to them on the radio and watching them on tv and wishing we could be them, they were being terrorized by their father and wishing they could be anyone but them...beautiful singers with such a sad, tragic story...I feel so bad for them
omg i flipped wen i found out they sang i wanna b closer i jumped up nd wuz sreamin "omg". i knew the song but who knows wat ur gonna get wen ur downloading it said it wuz el and sumbody else
I rememeber watching "Unsung" and one of a&r people from Motown was trying to get El to reach for those higher notes and he was complaining " Your'e trying to get me to sing like Bobby" and they said "You wish you could sing like Bobby" this song proves how bad Bobby De Barge was as a singer that even El who's a great singer couldn't best his older brother.
Wow.....these songs alone on this video can blow away ANY and ALL Pop and R&B artists right now. Music is something that, like you all, has always been a great part of my life... but along the way... it seems like the majority of music nowadays has gotten more and more degraded.
aww i wanna get this on dvd or something well all of debarge for that matter this band is so cool they jammin look ol dude in the back with afro peep em out i like this shit bobby debarge is the man R.I.P
i gotta question, cause this is erking me. Is Bobby, the lead singer on this video, also the lead singer on, "In the rhythm of the night", or is that El ???
@XrisSmiles Bobby is the lead singer here. El was the lead singer of the DeBarge group. They are brothers. Bobby is now deceased. El has gone solo and has a new CD out called 2nd Chance. It is the bomb!!!! Go check out Unsung- The DeBarges on youtube. It tells the whole story about their family from beginning to now. It really gives a good picture of what they went through and why. I LOVE Switch and all of the DeBarge family. I grew up on them.
@Msredhoney720 yeah baby, i actually downloaded Unsung like an hour or so after i asked this. i think its neat how they sound so similar. The Jacksons dont all sound the same.
To be honest, i didn't even know they were all Bi-racial. I thought they were Puerto Rican, lol!!! I was like, they sure like r& b TO BE LATINO. My goof. Thanks for clearing things up for me. im a more detailed fan now.
@Msredhoney720 I watched them on unsung and it was a tear jerker...i felt bad for them and just makes you realize how truly bless we are even without all the money they have....it was a truly sad stroy
Smalls paradise club, here I come. Man this was my jam, would u like 2 slow drag, yes folks that's what we call it back then. Now I think it's slow dance, the floor would be pack, & I would melt like butter. I've got 2 find that part, 2 fix my time machine, there's no joy & happiness like the 70's & early 80's. Who ever didn't live that era, really miss out on a lot, really good times. Thank u Lord...
One of the greatest soul/r&b groups ever! Love these unsung heros. This performance is lip-synch tho...but no matter these guys were at the top of their game.
@maryhadalittlelamb25 I actually remember this performance on tv. Me and my sister commenting on how fine (and I am sure a lot of females thought so) and the males probably wanted to be them.
This is music when you actually had to have talent. Great music by real singers and musicians. Not like these auto-tune artist of today. Love 70's & 80's R&B.
man, seeing Bobby...love this mini concert with There'll Never Be and I Wanna Be Closer...miss the old days back in school..we just wrote the lyrics out and handed it on a piece of paper to who we liked...
This group quit too soon cause it could've ranked up there in legacy with Earth Wind & Fire. This performance is masterfully smooth and has so many amazing nuances and textures. Love it! Thanks to whoever posted this Masterpiece. God bless & Peace!

This isn't live at all. i can hear him singing lightly iwith the recorded vocals track. Plus, the band ain't playing. Live is LIVE!
afrosensuous 9 months ago
@afrosensuous - You really can't tell. He sounds just like the track and that doesn't happen very often...not one cracked or off tune note.
ElsTheFuture 9 months ago
@ElsTheFuture Actually I can tell easyily. As soon as he starts singing the first verse, you can tell there's 2 voices being heard, his natural live voice and the recorded track.
afrosensuous 9 months ago
@afrosensuous - You have to admit...He still sounds good...right. Well, we all know he can sing and I haven't seen much footage of Switch performing so I really enjoyed this...background track an all. Peace!

@ElsTheFuture You know what??? I agree. At least there's some footage of them. Peace!!!

Klassic Switch music.
Bobby was actually more talented than El- believe it or not.
The whole DeBarge family- their dad was nothing nice at all, had a very rough upbringing & continue to fight demons because of it although Bunny seems to have gotten past hers.
RIP Bobby

Love this and I call Your name especially.. I hope El gets it together and keeps the Switch legacy alive..

TheNewsoul2 1 year ago 15
LOL 4 dumbasses don't know good music. How dispickable is that? This was one of the best songs that ever happened to R&B music.

Wow.....these songs alone on this video can blow away ANY and ALL Pop and R&B artists right now. Music is something that, like you all, has always been a great part of my life... but along the way... it seems like the majority of music nowadays has gotten more and more degraded.

Msredhoney720 1 year ago 18

This is music when you actually had to have talent. Great music by real singers and musicians. Not like these auto-tune artist of today. Love 70's & 80's R&B.
