Listen 5:18 - 5:31 again; he says that if what he finds resonates with new age or whatever, "go ahead, take it". That doesn't mean he's a new-ager (whatever that means), only that he offers his insight to whomever is interested in it.
Also, why is his spirituality nonsense? Is it because it's based on his understanding of the universe or is it only nonsense when compared to some other specific type of spirituality?
@laurijh In the broadest possible terms, new-age spirituality recognizes the universe itself as God, and as an actually theistic God: one that responds to human thoughts and prayers. In so many of his recent talks, Neil seems to veer very close to this. Without out-and-out endorsing it, he does lend it warrant that I don't feel is justified on scientific grounds. I labelled it "nonsense" because it isn't grounded on anything, and leads to odd and untenable implications.
NDT is awesome, but he should stick to physics education... his spirituality is nonsense. Has he come out as a New-Ager yet? With all this talk about communing with and being called by "the Universe", he can't possibly be far off. There's no problem with being in awe of the universe, but you can't start worshiping it...
@JWHurwitz I think the problem is the use of poetic language. It's often hard to express how something mind altering affects you. I am often at a loss for words when trying to explain to my wife (biologist) why this new thing I learned in math or physics is REALLY COOL and why I'm SOOO EXCITED about it. And so I often wax poetic, "I learned to stare into the infinite and understand what I see," was something I shared when I learned about the different "varieties" of infinity relate to calculus
@KPhysicsGeek Sure, but unrestrained poetic language leads to reification. If you actually were to say you were one with the infinite set of primes, you'd be in the realm of spirituality. I'd prefer to keep my science and mathematics in the realm of intellectual pursuit, and Neil does less and less well.
@JWHurwitz I would disagree, I can and do say I am one with math. Those laws of math that apply to everything else apply to me as well.
And besides, what's wrong with spirituality? As Sagan pointed out, "spirit" comes from the Latin, "to breath" and he often used spiritual to describe his experience with science. For me, spirituality is a feeling of connectedness to something bigger, and I think that's what Neil goes for as well.
@JWHurwitz one more thing, thinking about that concept you didn't like. "I was called by the Universe." Let's analyze (perhaps) what happened to Neil. He is exposed to a mind altering experience that fills him with awe and wonder. Why? The brain secretes pleasure giving chemicals. Why? Because of the interactions in that molecules in the brain, those same interactions of the rest of the universe, controlled by the laws of Nature. So, I think we can POETICALLY say the universe called Neil
If I had teachers with this much energy and optimism I don't think I would have hated school and dropped out. Thankfully I still want to learn and have internet access.
Umm i have a question the star that exploded its contents into nebulas(gas clouds..i think...i just searched it up) that colasped and formed stars...does that mean that the core of the earth was once a star itself??
The stuff in it came from a star, just like each one of us. The heavy elements beyond iron are only formed in the last split seconds of a supernova. Only the most basic elements--hydrogen, helium, etc--can be traced to the big bang itself. Everything else came from stars.
I think he's on to something with science and religion producing the same psychological response. It's why religion feels so threatened by science, because science accomplished what religion failed at - finding the truth, and discovering our connection to the world and ultimately the universe.
NdGT might not be able to stop time, but he can damn sure make it seem to slow down a little!!! When the video was over I sat and stared into a wall for a while until time synced up with reality again. This man should wear a little recording device round his neck!
@angela1894 ugh, no one cares about your racist sentiments, I'm proud to be in the same species as individuals like Neil Degrasse Tyson, Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan...and many other brilliant minds....
@angela1894 That is by far the most ignorant and disgusting thing I have ever read on any youtube comment board, so congratulations on being the dumbest bitch on the internet. What is disgusting is the fact that you are allowed to make such derogatory statements without having any validity in your claim. His enthusiasm has nothing to do with the pigmentation of his skin. If you had any intellect you would know there is no difference in our genetics. Race is superficial. You are a dumb cunt.
Professor Tyson is a wonderfull citizen of the universe. he is a real astronomer and physicist that is very dedicated to think about the universe in such a true and mystical way, a way that outshines every religous belief. He is not trying to be a scientist by expressing his fascination, he appeals to people with a childlike awe of the universe, and it would be nice if we all felt like that once in a while in our daily lives. then we would'nt fear the unknown, we would be in awe of it.
Niel, thank you. I have had that same thought on my mind for years, feeling very lost. I do treat that as religion, it fills that same gap that "god" once did when I was christian. The second I heard of quantum physics, those feelings disappeared.
Your lecture sir, gave me those same feelings, and acceptance. Your work has affected yet another life drastically. Thank you.
What every person of African descent should aspire to be; logical, scientific, articulate, noble, honest, intriguing. Instead of superstitous, violent, arrogant pariahs of modern society.
@alienfighter9 that's pathetic. you don't need weed to enjoy the bliss that thoughts of the universe and its origin bring. the human mind is capable of wonderful things in its most natural state.
@kartikvenkat Thank you for your opinion. Does it make you feel good to look down upon others? He never said he required smoking weed to enjoy listening to this. He said he wanted to smoke weed with Neil. Which would probably result in some interesting conversations. Which is cool, and is why 43 people liked his comment..
