As much as I like Davin James's style, why does he kick and punch so "slowly." Is that is regular speed? Is he trying not to harm you? Does he not have enough control? Or is it a stylistic thing?
Good! Shows training how it's supposed to look. Imperfect, filled with mistakes but at the same time showing constant learning and improvement. Keep it up:) can't wait until my next class:-D
Not being rude but that is not applicable to a real fight, Sifu David James stands their with low gaurd as if he has an iron body, His kicks are weak and can easily be caught with a sanshou catch and took to the ground.
I have not seen very much Kung fu like the black guy was doing, I liked it, do you guys do any contact sparring with gloves and head gear? Because what I learned is that, if you train to miss every time that's what's gonna happen in real life. I feel like you really need the contact sparring to feel what it's like to land the strikes and also block them. But I don't know your guys life, so I'm not trying to judge or anything lol
Freddie has a thing about full contact sparring. I posted that comment before watching his other video about that. It's not very safe and I agree with him, though I still continue to do full contact sparring, Freddie said that sparring should be a learning experience, and if you leave too hurt to even train the next few days, what's the point??? And he's right, I have calmed down my contact sparring and perfer to spar the instructor so it's more controled.
Look in his profile, I watch tons of Freddies videos, it might be thrown into a different video like the sport fighting vids and stuff. I just know he talks about full contact sparring has it's benifits, IF you arn't just putting gear on and fighting, it should be about learning.
@GuamKomudo amature and pro boxers spar with contact everyday, but dont go all out or try for a knock out,you just take the finish off the shots so theres no real follow through. Its called technical sparring.Contact can be dialled up or down depending upon the student .What the lads are doing here is a waste of time, you cant learn timing and distance without contact, the mechanics of the techs are even different.
That's not true, this teaches timing and distance ect. FMK is not about fighting, it's about life. Mike Tyson can probably KO anyone in the boxing ring, but that's all it's good for. I bet most the fighters, if they didn't fight in the ring, would never even need to know how to fight... There's much more to life than hitting people, and FMK and other martial arts teach that. How you live your life, how you treat others is much more important than how you throw a punch...
@billysue2 There is something called control. Boxers use gloves and that serves to be the control. Take off the gloves and go bare fists and see how long boxers will last without going to the hospital. You will not be a better fighter or MA if you are in the hospital. Control can come in the form us using gear and gloves or it can come in the form of holding back the power you exert when you strike. Tell me do you advise the samuri to practice with real swords and kill in every opportunity?
1: That is hardly intelligent training. In order to train intelligently you must be aware of your health.Contact is needed in order to learn but not too much contact, too much contact will only serve to destroy your health, not enhance it.Police Officers don't shoot each other with real guns in order to prepare themselves to survive on the streets. They train safe and smart. When U spar U must train safe and smart. You don't need to get a broken nose in order to learn to move better to not get hit
@FreddiesModernKungFu thats a completely mistaken notion of how to develope skills. The contact when i trained in thai and boxing varied from light technical to full but much less often.Bullets kill, punches dont .The fact that cops cant shoot each other means they are never fully prepared and make many mistakesunder pressureThe fact is that skills learned in non contact sparring are next to useless in combat, its too different.
@FreddiesModernKungFu you cannot spar realistically or improve skills you need to use realistically without contact and you cant safely train contact without gear on.To get good at sword fighting you have to sword fight with fake weapons, how good would a fencer be without contact sparring. In this vid are out of range for almost everything,Its training incorrect timing and range perception as well as the mechanics of techniques.
@GuamKomudo Davin has reached a very high level of training. His attacks are very lethal as are mine if I go full force. We have nothing to prove to one another, I respect his ability and he respects mine, there is no need to make any more contact for the both of us b/c it can only lead to unnecessary injuries for the both of us. When I train my disciples I make more contact in order to help them learn but once you reach a certain level you know what you are capable of.
1: I don't wear gloves and head gear b/c I will not be wearing that on the streets. So I train to move fast enough so that I do not get hit, if I do get hit then I must be able to take the hit. If my sparring partner hits me too hard in which I feel it will hinder my health and not promote it then I will let him know to lessen up for the force. With precision and a high degree of control no gear will be needed, it will be more realistic and you will be better prepared for a real confrontation
@FreddiesModernKungFu I am pro pads and not pro pads... in my videos I spar both ways. With pads, we can throw full force and speed, and reduce injury (i.e. saving bones or muscles for when you really need it in a life endangering/threating situation; also u can continue training body hardening in a proficient manner) and without pads, occasionally, you know your limits on realism of a 50-75% contact, counters, recoils of a technique, and aftermath of a "clash."
@FreddiesModernKungFu you will get bum rushed and knocked out in a street fight, you fighting to choreographed like, not real combat, u have to really punch with gloves to train your chin and body to receive real blows, doing sit ups i helps but no way enough , Bruce lee trained real combat sparring , what your doing is worse than tai kwon do point sparring, you have alot to learn about fighting, timing if very important you need to spar more full contact
@TheTruthBringer1 I'm not sure I completely understand you, but if I may, I think the issue you're seeing is that they are sparring. A real street fight in most cases doesn't last any longer than a couple of minutes, and even that is long. A quick kick to the groin and the fights over essentially. I think in this form of sparring any attack that isn't evaded properly or blocked is considered a hit. If they go full force, unhealthy damage is clearly going to occur.
@FreddiesModernKungFu you may thinks your attacks are powerful but i see no hip in you kicks are punches both of you the power from punches in in you hips and butt not in you chest muscles,
@TheTruthBringer1 Atleast learn english before you try to insult anyone. Especially a martial artist. Let met correct your 5th grade level comment: "(Y)ou may (think) your attacks are powerful but (I) see no (use of the hips) in (your) kicks (or) punches(.) (For) both of you(,) the power from (your) punches (is) in (your) hips and butt(.) Not in your chest mucles(.)" Come back to insult whenever your down scribbling words with crayon. Finally, Unless you can do better; STFU.
@FreddiesModernKungFu Curious to what you count as a hit, I know gearless non contact is useful if you only count hits that are in distance, eg your arm is not fully extended but you can still touch your opponents body meaning if you wanted to extend and go through them, you could
I see too many Karate guys sparring similarly but they are fully extended when they touch meaning in a real fight they were actually out of distance
@FreddiesModernKungFu compare your kicks and timing to cung le (mma fighter) THEIR is no comparison, you fighting stance and low hands are beginner level, yall have flexibility and strength but no timing, and power in your strikes, you can be strong with absolutely no punching power, and only people are or ignorant to real fighting think otherwise
I've always wanted to learn some form of martial arts, especially after seeing "Enter the Dragon" and "Return of the Dragon" when I was a kid. Unfortunately I injured my back a few years ago and it would be very hard for me do the training necessary. I suppose with a strong mind you can overcome anything but I'm a long way from that*lol*. You and your videos do serves as a inspiration though!.
Excellent stand up work, Wonderful hand speed. Keep it going, train wise, train hard. This is practical and has it's own beauty. Thanks again for letting me see your dojo, your area of training.
Now that's sparring, moving around, faking, dodging, blocking, quick strikes that delivers damage. Beautiful stand up work, gentlemen I loved it. My only suggestion is that you where as much protective gear as necessary to reduce possibility of permanent harm, or injury that will cause great recovery time. I understand that one must also feel the impact of a hit, to truly appreciate it and to have understanding, but don't want to kill or gravely injure your training partner.
As much as I like Davin James's style, why does he kick and punch so "slowly." Is that is regular speed? Is he trying not to harm you? Does he not have enough control? Or is it a stylistic thing?
