However, in 1974, Ford warned Congress that cutting off support to Cambodian would result in a bloodbath and Tip O'Neil said that Cambodians "weren't worth the life of one American flier" It's these f'n people going on about "war crimes" that are responsible.

Pol Pot was a paranoid maniac who systematically murdered anyone he felt was a threat to him. I think this was fueled by jealousy as well: he had failed his electronics exams three time in a row (leading to his expulsion from school in France). This certainly must have harbored his hatred of intellectuals - hence he murdered so many scholars after he took over the government.
