Well, I have a LR 110 and my friend has a G-class with 3.0 diesel auto. He drove on a beach and he couldn't get out. I had to help him, I made it, he didn't. Last week I was on a military vehicle meeting and I had to pull out of mud 3 G classes, 3 patrols and some uazes. I only needed help once, but the mud was soo deep and sticky that only tracked transporter could help me.
Yes, the G-class is better in theory but landy goes better somehow, I was really suprised (both cars offroad prepared) .
breaking down of the G (and I mean the 461 not the 463!) will not happen very often. The breakdowns of a defender will cost u a lot more than the single breakdown of a G is my experience.... They're both OK, but during the trips i've made in desolate areas, the 461 never broke down, while the defender always had some trouble. If u need a reliable tool, there's no substitute for a 461 G class. IMHO!
defender is wayyy better off-road + it has locking diff's, better low range transfer case and other stuff stock that the mb just doesn't have, the merc's ok but too expensive/ fragile.
T case of the MB is fully synchronized can go from Hi 2WD to HI 4WD or LOW4 without stoping. you can go fast up hill in 4HI and when run out of power just change it to 4Lo and not losing momentum.
My friend ate his words.
Love defenders but you have to modify them to be as capable as a G.
@mynottwst you are the IDIOT. Land rovers don't install AXLE lockers. the only locker they have is in the center. The center diff locker is to lock the rear and front propshaft. this is because they are AWD (Defenders, Range rovers and Discovery)
series Rovers are part time 4WD. so, they don't have center diff.
The term Locking hubs or Free wheeling hubs has nothing to do with Lockable differentials. they are just for disconnecting the front wheels from the front diff and Tcase.
G fragile??? with this comment you just showed that dont have IDEA about the G.
G is one of the toughest 4x4 vehicle. the body has 2 mm sheet metal, not aluminum that bends just by watching it. you can put 35's in thois axles no problem. the transfer case y made of steel not cast aluminum. I can go on and explain you why the G is not fragile. but probably you are so blinded that are going to answer with more non sense and insults. you don't know better.
@jman0180 Land rover and Jeep fan... that's OK, but imho ure a fan without knowledge.... the G is everything exept fragile! The basic version (460, now 461) has two diff locks and is very, very reliable. The 463 has three diff locks and is a bit fragile because of the electronics. Comparing a defender with a 460/461..... well well, when ure a very good mechanic, you maybe will arrive ure destination too....but not at the time the G arrived;)
Hahaha, G Driver seems to be an idiot. It makes sense that a car with lockers in the axles gets further then one with open axle diffs, does'ent it??? You need 3 things for perfect offroading. First: A capable driver, Second: lockers in front and rear axle, Third: Good Tires wich give you traction. That's it !
defender all the way

@cgyiltis defenders d have locking diffs.... get your facts right!!!!!
mynottwst 1 year ago
@mynottwst
no they don't. They only have the center diff. Land rover never installs lockers in axels. Just LSD in the rear.
All the defenders, series, range rovers and discoveries Dont have diff lockers. The hardcore defenders have aftermarket lockers.
The latest defenders rely on traction control.
So I have my facts rigth
cgyiltis 1 year ago
@cgyiltis yeah a central diff-lock idiot. series have locking wheel hubs, the rest have nothing I agree...

@maxxer1981 the G is the most expensive to buy and the most expensive to fix when they do brake down.
