I recognized a few of the titles there: Dragon Ball/ Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, One Piece(thought I saw it briefly), Lupin III, Ikki Tousen(i think), and Appleseed.
@AnimeFan2236 to rent? about the same as in the US - about $3 for 5 days at my local shop. To buy - fairly expensive - check out Amazon(dot)co.jp for examples of prices
I agree - when I buy American comics, I also keep them. But others, especially those on a budget, appreciate the ability to rent the books, like borrowing from a library, for a very cheap price.
Japan doesn't have as much storage space as America too, so often I know my students share a room, etc, so collecting all that manga would take up a lot of space.
you are correct. I spent 5 years in Shimane, Japan as an ALT. Go to my main channel page and check out my playlists if you want to know more about teaching in Japan.
I think I saw one or two anime titles I recognized. then I saw like 007 and stuff. I laughed when I saw pirates of the carribean in katakana XD I also would've laughed if I saw elfen lied in there which I think I did... maybe, I don't know!
I didn't buy that many since you can't bring them back to America and play them on a regular DVD player since America is Region One and Japan is Region Two.
Big Hollywood movies are usually offered on DVD with two language tracks - the original English track and a dubbed Japanese track and two sets of subtitles - English and Japanese.
I can understand more than I can speak Japanese, but I get by OK. I can't watch a Japanese movie on DVD tho, unless it has English subtitles. The actors just speak too fast for me.
yeah - this place used to be open 24 hours a day, which is crazy for my small rural town, so now they're open until 2am every night. I was there about 11:30pm, since I didn't want a bunch of people looking at me funny for talking to my camera. It gets busy, but never as busy as some of the video stores I worked at during college.
Funny thing... reminds me that the video stores in the boondocks like Ishikawa prefecture were much bigger that in the middle of residential Tokyo. Yours is much bigger than mine.
Why not show some of the adult section, cuz people are usually astonished when I tell them that Hentai Anime makes up only a small fraction of what these rental shops offer.
man, that is a huge selection. all that is over here is the crap on the Animation stations. Boring. I miss the old stuff. heh shows my age. Again, thanks for the vid Jason.
I loved that Yankee Doddle song in the shop at the end.
Shin-chan is airing on Cartoon Network. It has a lot of adult humor, probably not a very accurate adaptation of it if it's found in the kid's section in Japan. A lot of the series you showed are airing on TV here in the States.
I see in the sidebar you say that you don't watch much anime (me too). Do you rent movies very often? What kind of movies do you watch? I watch a lot of American movies, there are so many good ones. I am kind of lucky to have a store near me that rents 3 weeklies for 300en so I like it there.
I rent all kinds of movies. I try to watch Japanese movies, but so few of the DVDs have English subtitles, and it's still tough for me to watch a whole movie in Japanese.
I worked in video/laserdisc/dvd shops all thru my twenties and while in college, so I know a lot about movies and I've seen everything.
I rent a lot of American TV on DVD here, since I've seen every movie, except new releases, which come out here painfully slow.
I'm looking forward to renting "Cloverfield" this week.
oh yeah, I am definitely with you there, Japanese movies without the subtitles are very hard. I think if you could understand everything said in a Japanese movie you could call yourself very very fluent.I used to watch a lot of American movies with the Japanese dubbing over the top and English subtitles but I havent been doing that much lately. Its good practise I think but the actors real voices make a big difference to the feel of the "part".I havent heard of Cloverfield before,I'll checkitout.
ok...no videorent store can compete with this...i already love it!we really need one here in canada;3but the thing is,it won't still be cheap as in japan. Thanks jason for this great video!
LOL, you looked a bit embarrassed to be in the anime section at the beginning of the video (or it could just be my imagination). I'm surprised to see the aisles so empty at this place!
I'm not a big anime person. I've watched Naruto and Full Metal Alchemist (FMA my personal favorite watched the whole series including movie twice) but other than that, nothing. Cool to see some things around your town though.
I'm sure the membership is obscenely priced. Yeah, no doubt about it, you are definitely in a video/comic/cd store. I'm surprised they actually rent out CDs with all the piracy that goes on in this day and age. Well, it's good to see that the Hollywood movies section is just like the way it was in Takamatsu. I think Order of the Phoenix was just getting released over there when I visited. English dialogue, Japanese subtitles. I assume they're in the foreign movies area of the store :)
Well actually in most places the membership is free, at least it was for me. As far as I know, piracy isn't as widespread as in the rest of world, and because cd's are totally overpriced in japan, most people just rent cd's
