My heart is hurting so much, I saw Bruce and the E Street Band in 1984 in Houston,TX, and Clarence Clemmons was such an Icon, he was amazing, he just went with whatever Bruce was doing, I am so sorry he died way too young, I am truly heartbroken over this, May he rest in peace forever, Michele.
Bruce Springsteen is one of the greatest live perfomers ever. He is known for that. His voice is just very gruff, strong, and raspy. If you want smooth and silky -- no he's not the one but that's what his fans love. That strength, gruffness, and raspiness spells masculinity and helps his songs about strong social issues get across. I love Bruce Springsteen and this song.
Not saying this song is bad, on the contrary... I am sure its a very patriotic song for Americans... But, with all due respect... This guy just cant sing live!!!!
Sounds great when its recorded in a studio... But, gosh, he just kills the song by singing it for a live audience!
@griffonsa Obviously you haven't listened to Springsteen too long. Bruce never had the greatest singing voice even when he records in the studio. He will never beat Whitney Houston or Maria Carey for their outstanding tonal ability. That being said, Bruce is the best entertainer in the world because what you seemed to have missed is his unbelievable ability to make Magic. Springsteen proves that he is the best even without the greatest singing voice. You just need a Reason to Believe. :)
The thing that makes great art great, is that it's a lot of different things to a lot of different people. It isn't only about what the artist may have intended.
America is based of the idea that everyone has their own opinion. Even though he is protesting a war, hes still fulfilling his obligation of the free exchange of ideas.
I can't believe I found this video!!!! I was living in Spain@ that time,I was at this same concert!!!!!Never forget that day!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for posting!!!
This song is just illustrative of how Vietnam veterans were shafted. Actually WWI vets were shafted equally. In fact, the only veterans who were treated with some semblance of decency in America were WWII veterans.
it was fun when reagan used this as a campaign son, and then it came out that it's a song AGAINST vietnam he was prety quick to change song haha, you should have done your research... bruce is THE BOSS

What would you know at 19 about Vietnam ?Just as much as Springsteen, nothing. Now go ahead and write and sing a song for the poser Springsteen be.Then I'll call you the BOSS.
Bang on, people confuse patriotism with always following government exactly, but to me it's more being proud of what you and your fellow countrymen can acheive, and honouring those who give their lives to defend those ideals, whether you agree with them or not.
Not the Greatest Anti Gov song but inspired by the likes of John Kerry and Bobby Muller like a soldier in the Winters night. Both served as In listed officers in Vietnam.Navy=Kerry = Muller Marine. Those two turn to being part of the anti War movement. However Nam was never a WAR.

anyone whos dissin this song for its american content is moronic. this song is almost anti american but aside from any of that it kicks so much ass its hard to comprehend, probably the greatest keyboard driven rocker of all time and almost makes me wish i was an american so i could belt it out with honest conviction.. brings a tear to my eye.. no one should fuck with a guy named THE BOSS.
You do realize that this is not a patriotic song. Read the lyrics somewhere. If anything, it's a criticism of America and its involvment in the Vietnam War.
Grunt is slang for Infantry,11 bravo that served in Nam.Just a little reality to that of a Springsteen fan that buys into the hype and Image of a poser that's never seen a day in Vietnam.

This song is so patriotic! People say it's not, but it is...
He's expressing his feelings about what the American citizens go through, and the forgotten vets.
he's letting the government know about themselves!
This is the most patriotic song ever written, but in an ironic way.
