Hi, Extrema Ratio (latin) means "last chance","extreme solution".The factory it's the official supplier of the Special Operation Command(Comando Operazioni Speciali).185th R.A.O. stand for Ricognizione Acquisizione Obiettivi(Recon Obj Acquisition).Assignement is long range recon missions and TAD(target acquisition and designation). The knife is intended to be a heavy survival one than combat and it's the second knife(backup)for every operative.(Alex, former operative Folgore special ops)Folgore!
Thanks noss4 for 03:52, I myself have a problem with a little bit of blade play with one of my knives ( not this amazing little folder you have there, just a Gerber Profile 3.5 ), and that little trick fixed it! Great videos by the way, really shows the true power of some knives
@chronocentric67 250, 300 euros is the price of a used glock 17!!knifes are simple pieces of steel!!!i'm italian, i know extrema ratio very well, totally overpriced! bye
The RAO is almost certainly the toughest folder I've ever seen, but I'm still scratching my head about its purpose. For all the complexity and involvement needed to actually get it set up for use, why not just carry a fixed blade? Anyone who is willing to carry the size and weight of the RAO cannot possibly have an issue with a smaller fixed blade like the Emerson PUK, or even Extrema Ratio's own Fulcrum C. A fixed blade will ALWAYS be stronger than a folder.
@mrpinkbullets What you arent taking into consideration is the strength of the handle. The handle on many similar insanely hard use knives is the weak spot. There is no spine to break, several points of impact absorbtion. the locking pin is not vital, it is however a guarantee. I have used my RAO without the pin nearly every single use. When folded, it is tiny compared to an equally beefy fixed blade.
I have this knife, its remarkable and perfect, completely flawless as an indestructable folder.
It certainly is NOT an EDC blade, its a broad range beast of a tool but not something 99% of people would ever consider as an EDC, its bulky, heavy etc.
The blade is a beast, and if you didnt have the depressions on the metalwork (its all metal btw) you would have a stupidly heavy knife. All the grooves in the handle actually make comfort a big plus, and the grooves in the blade facilitate weight without strength loss.
But yes, extrema knives are not to everyones visual taste.
Well taste is personal... The knife may not be beautiful in a conventional sense, however it is impressive and intimidating. It looks tough, indestructible even, and that has its own appeal.
Ah yeah, it is a beast. I dont see how it would be a quality EDC ever.. its more like a purpose built tool. I know a forensic employee in the police, they use it regularly (cutting away, prying things etc) in that regard its wonderful, a really hardcore folder... but thats all it really is, a tool more than an EDC. Its one of the slowest folders you could ever choose to deploy especially on a regular basis... would get old for me very fast.
i really love this review from you and i love this knife but i got a question is this the ultimate knife??? and is this knife the best that you have tested???? is this knife usefull for whole my life
Hey Nossie where exactly did you pick up that awesome tool. Because I know it's Italian made but thats all I know about them and oh yeah that the company released a statement regarding "fakes" and to steer clear of them.
I'd rather just carry a fixed blade. don't have to bother with the "Locking pin". I'd like to see how fast he could get the thing out of the sheath (while on belt) and open and ready to use. I'm guessing a little over one minute.
Imagine you're going to cut something, anything, a piece of rope. It takes 1 second to cut through it. You really want to struggle with your knife for a minute before you get to use it?
Hey Noss: Keep 'em coming! These tests are useful in ways in which most knife tests simply aren't. You've probably heard this before but the RAO needs a destruction test, partly because of the fact that people would really like to see this particular knife's true long lasting capability, but most importantly how (as I perceive it)a genuinely top notch heavy folder holds ground against the fixed blades. These high level knives aren't exactly cheap, so I completely understand your hesitance.

The Pohl Force Alpha 2 seems well built. Though I'd like to see some good tests done on it. You know, a little trial by fire.

@mrpinkbullets , It was was designed for the Italy Millitary.
They were sort of some spotting and surveillance troupe.
The knife they carry must be strong enough to improvise and small enough to fit in a pocket~
I guess that's why

Question: The blade itself is really wide, but the part attached to the handle seems really thin. Is this just optical or is it weak?

That's your EDC!?! I guess your philosophy is "Go big, or go home." That thing makes a Strider look like a keychain knife.
Random question. What do you do with your test knives after you test them? Trash, sell, trade , , ,?
