  • I could ALWAYS let mine off leash in deep snow...then he would follow in our tracks or come back to our tracks quickly after a few steps of new snow.....but on dry ground...well, let's just say he needed the leash :)

  • Their noses take them away sometimes! Mine was "trained" but if he smelled something interesting, he would just hop the fence and come home in an hour. He was very sweet, but I would not have another because of the CONSTANT shedding and skin problem (subatious cysts). I was warned before I got him that Elkhounds are the worst dog for shedding. They have two shedding seasons, which last six months each...

  • the elkhounds are amazing dogs.......

  • Lol toddtherod!

I have to agree that I have never been able to fully train any of mine I'm on my 3rd and 4th now. Even the better ones you get the impression that they are just playing the game and will do what the hell they like if they feel like it anyway.

  • I want an Elkhound so bad it hurts. Don't think I have enough energy to exercise a second dog each day. Oh well, I love my springer. ;)

  • our elkie was very well trained from a young age and she was never spayed either. if your dog is happy it will never run away and ours always obeyd very well.

  • Nice job. I've had a couple of Elkhounds now and discovered something interesting. They are very, very difficult to keep in check around the house or on the leash: they are so independent-minded they don't take well to pointless commands. But take one off the leash out in the deep woods and suddenly they listen perfectly. It's almost like they think they're on the hunt and now have to pay attention to master's directions. Amazing (and not well known) breed.

  • aw how cute ^_^ I wish mine was like that I can barely walk him on a leash

  • I think I would kill to have my Elkhound act like this.
